Ok, so we know for a fact that energy cannot be created or destroyed right, so what was there before the big bang? People say the universe came to be because of the Big Bang but what caused it to happen? Ive always wanted to know.

I woke up this morning with nothing to do and went to bed with only half of it done.

It is not a fact that energy cannot be creeated. In fact matter can be converted to create energy, which is exactly what happens in an atomic bomb. Energy is created there. That aside, I never understood what caused Big Bang. I read Stephen Hawkings' book "A brief history of time" where he explains about this in detail, but I didn't understand most of it. Maybe you will benefit from reading that.

I'm not sure how the hell we're here. I know where this is going anyway.

Hey, how's it going?

I thought energy could not be created, only converted/moved.

Like punching a bop-em clown, you're transfering your energy into the clown, not created a blast of new energy.

I agree. Energy cannot be either created or destroyed. So what was there before the big bang?

It happened. How?

How did God do it then?

I guess both are equally confusing. But which sounds more logical, The Big Bang happening through an unexplained scientific phenomenon? Or a big guy with a beard creating everything ever?

And furthermore, where did God come from? How was he created? If the Big Bang can be called into question about it's creation, than so can God.

And you liar, teller of tall tales: you trample all the Lord's commandments underfoot, you murder, steal, commit adultery, and afterward break into tears, beat your breast, take down your guitar and turn sin into a song. Shrewd devil, you know very well that God pardons singers no matter what they do, because he can simply die for a song.

According to the University of Michigan:

About 15 billion years ago a tremendous explosion started the expansion of the universe. This explosion is known as the Big Bang. At the point of this event all of the matter and energy of space was contained at one point. What exisisted prior to this event is completely unknown and is a matter of pure speculation. This occurance was not a conventional explosion but rather an event filling all of space with all of the particles of the embryonic universe rushing away from each other. The Big Bang actually consisted of an explosion of space within itself unlike an explosion of a bomb were fragments are thrown outward. The galaxies were not all clumped together, but rather the Big Bang lay the foundations for the universe.

Unless of course, one holds to the belief that God created it in six days and rested on the seventh.

Which if anyone does, that's fine with me except a bit too simplistic.

Goddamn if I could come even close to comprehending it, though. The 'Big Bang', that is. I read Hawkings book too and sort of, kind've got the general idea... but the majority of it went WAY over my head. Maybe one day I'll pick it up & try again.

The National Geographic and History Channels have aired some interesting programs that deal with the 'Big Bang', and the universe in general...for now I'm content with the awesome compute graphics and scientific explanations presented in those.

Traditionally that was what was believed, till Einstein came up with his famous E=mc^2 formula where E stands for energy, m stands for mass and c for the speed of light which equals 300 million metres per sec. This is the mass-energy equivalence formula, which states that if you destroy a tiny amount of mass (matter), it can be converted to an enormously large energy (becuase of the multiplication with c^2 in the formula which equals square of 300 million). This is the exact principle used in atom bombs and nuclear power generation stations. So energy can be created (and destroyed too) in special circumstances. Ordinarily we see only transformation from one form to another. Interestingly most conversions finally end up as heat due to friction and other losses in nature.

Yes svsg, usually at the beginning students are explained how energy changes forms and is constant, then in higher grades they also are taught that mass has a part in that equation, hence the rule is that the total amount of mass and energy is constant and they only can change into different forms, be it changing in different form of energy or conversion of energy into mass or vise versa.
