What makes the Bacall/Robinson slap scene memorable to you and me, and keeps us wondering, is that we don't know what he said--but we can imagine the worst. It's made even more dramatic because the Johnny Rocco character is relatively well-spoken and has a patina of sophistication, but always has that crude violence lurking in the background. Nice touch! If it were a contemporary movie, someone like Joe Pesci would have spat out a string of vicious obscenities in her ear, and she would have told him to go f**k himself (and have gotten shot
