The Best Buy near my house posted a sale, Buy RTP for $20 and get American Beauty for free because they are both by director Sam Mendes, well the were out of AB, so I bought RTP without it. Very upset.
The Don Ferro
And you liar, teller of tall tales: you trample all the Lord's commandments underfoot, you murder, steal, commit adultery, and afterward break into tears, beat your breast, take down your guitar and turn sin into a song. Shrewd devil, you know very well that God pardons singers no matter what they do, because he can simply die for a song.

I rented it last night and I enjoyed it. I thought Tom Hanks's performance was very good. just a question though, what do you all think these gangster/mafia films don't have that the godfather has? Like what elements are missing? The more mafia films I watch the more and more the GF movies (I & II) stand out.

The Godfather was character driven. The Road to Perdition was similar in that respect, and was a great movie. Just not as great as I hoped from the previews.

I really thought it was a great flick. Not exactly the same feel as we've come to know and love in The Godfather trilogy, so I can fully relate to some lack of enthusiasm like m' friend, SC's. However, if nothing else, I thought the cinematography was absolutely outstanding! If it's not nominated for an Oscar in that categorey, it sure should be. In that context, it actually did remind me of The Godfather: the snow, deadness of Winter, and especially the gritty look in the street scenes. The pouring rain was extremely effective, and particularly in one powerful scene (don't fret: I won't give it away, but you'll know when you see it!). I thought the storyline was unique and opened up a whole new avenue in mob-type flicks (sort of like what Unforgiven did for the Western). Hanks was, as usual, excellent, despite my initial belief that he couldn't pull it off (who'd ever thought he'd be a good enforcer??). Newman's performance should serve as a template for what great acting is. He should definitely take home an Oscar! The DVD provides some deleted scenes, and I think at least 2 of them should've been included in the final cut, but oh well (but I AM thankful they decided to go without Capone's scene...it was awful!). The musical score wasn't great, but it was pretty good. Like I said, different kind of mob flick, but I thought it was great, nonetheless. Heavy, heavy on both drama and action! I'd give it a 9 outta' 10.

It is a visually appealing movie, and you really get a sense of the time (the 1930's) through the use of colors, props and costumes. You're right, Snake, about that street scene with the heavy rain coming down. Its a powerful, beautifully photographed and sequenced scene. I think I'll like the movie better as I watch it again.

I'm also surprised it didn't get a "Best Picture" Oscar nomination. When it came out during the summer, before all the holiday season "blockbusters", there was talk of that.

Jude Law very underrated performance. What a nutty person. I was also surprised and a little mad by the omittion. (if that's a word)

I, too, for some reason liked a lot better after I got it on DVD and watched compared to when I saw it in theathers. I like it better than Gangs Of New York. It takes two watches to appreciate it's superiority. It's one of the best films of 2002 and defenitly a classic. Grade: A
