The Departed is set in South Boston, where the state police force is waging war on Irish-American organized crime. Young undercover cop Billy Costigan (DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate the mob syndicate run by gangland chief Frank Costello (Nicholson). While Billy quickly gains Costello's confidence, Colin Sullivan (Damon), a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the police department as an informer for the syndicate, is rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operations he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the mob and the police that there's a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger of being caught and exposed to the enemy-and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself. But is either willing to turn on the friends and comrades they've made during their long stints undercover?

Looks like a decent film,not Oscar material though

I don't think its about THE Frank Costello (the NYC "Prime Minister"). For one thing, Costello was Italian, not Irish, AND two, he was based in New York, not Boston.

I saw a Chinese film on filmfour a few weeks back with the exact same storyline , it was called Internal Affairs I think , it was quite good

Yeah, that seems a little weird.

I thought this was a very good movie, by far the best film Scorsese had made since Goodfellas. I never liked Casino, so some may not agree with that statement.

Better than Cape Fear?

Goodfellas is my favorite Martin Scorsese movie of all time. The Departed is my second favorite film of all time. I just really like The Departed. For such a big talent cast, I felt no one stole the movie and all gave wonderful performances in their roles. The cinematography was great, I suggest reading the latest issue of American Cinematographer, as it features an article of how the movie was shot and interviews with the director of photography. Story I felt was very interesting. I did like it more than Internal Affairs.

anyway I enjoyed the movie... Jack Nicholson's perfomance was AWESOME!

I believe that the character is loosely based on Whitey Bulger, who was once the boss of the Boston Mob.

Good movie, lots of twists and turns

now remember he was the head of the winter hill gang, not so much the boston mob, which was run by his right hand man's good friend cadillac frank.

Costello is an Irish name.
Francesco Castiglia took the name when such a pseudonym
was common with Italian Gangsters. (See; Machine Gun Jack McGurn as well.)
I'm sure Scorsese gave Nicholson's character the name as kind of an inside joke.

On the special edition dvd, does Marty offer anything about Dignam's motive at the end of the movie ?

Personally, I don't think he had any motive other than wanting to see Sullivan pay for his actions, one way or the other.

Not that I can recall pizzaboy. And I believe you are correct. He just wanted to see him pay for what he did.

Dignam was my favorite character.

I'm glad Alan Arkin won the Academy Award, given the fact that he's been around a long time and all, but I really liked Wahlberg in this movie, and had he won, I would have been okay with it.

He's developed into a fine actor.

I thought the award should have went to either Eddie Murphy or Mark Wahlberg. No offense to Alan Arkin, and I haven't seen a lot of his work, but I don't believe he deserved the award (and yes, I did see Little Miss Sunshine)

I really want to see this film but as of yet am unable to.

It really was a great movie. The more I watch it the more I come to believe that Marty really deserved the Oscar, that it wasn't just a lifetime achievment thing.

It is ironic though, all those classic Italian-American/New York movies, and he wins it for an Irish gangster flick set in Boston.
