Gotti Back In Prison Hospital 11/10/01
After a two-week stay at a private hospital in Springfield Missouri, Mafia boss John Gotti was returned to a nearby federal prison hospital to continue serving his life sentence.
"He received the treatment that he was sent to the local hospital for, and he was discharged by his attending physician," said prison spokeswoman Diane Smith."
Smith declined to discuss the reason for Gotti's sudden transfers to and from the St. John's Regional Health Center but Gotti relatives and friends say the onetime Dapper Don suffered an arrhythmia, an irregular heart beat.
Gotti, 61, has been behind bars since 1990. Convicted of racketeering and five murders in 1992, he was sentenced to life in prison and shipped to the federal prison in Marion, where he has spent most of the last nine years.
In 1998, he was diagnosed with head and neck cancer and a malignant tumor in his throat was removed. The cancer returned last year and while Gotti and his family have reportedly made funeral plans, his lawyers and friends say Gotti is still battling and has not given up hope.
