There were a lot of factors coming into play on this hit (on Anastasia). Vito Genovese was the leader against Albert, who had been "helped" by Frank Costello. Genovese really wanted Costello out of the picture so Vito could be the big Boss. A hit attempt was made against Costello in May, 1957, but Costello was only wounded. It was almost a certainty that Anastasia would attempt to avenge the hit because he was in Costello's corner, so Genovese sanctioned the hit on Big Al which took place in October, 1957.

Carlo Gambino, realizing that Genovese could and would "win" this one went along with the hit, and was rewarded with the Family's leadership. Once he got to the top he turned against Genovese and was helpful in setting up Don Vito on drug charges.

Very deceitful, this showed the true Mob workings.
