He also spent several months in jail on contempt of court charges stemming from his arrest at the famous Apalachin meeting of 1957. He was released when a judge vacated the contempt citations of all those who were held for refusing to talk to a grand jury. After that, he maintained a solid "legitimate" front in the wholesale meat and poultry business.
