I like the idea of the story picking up after the death of Mary.

However, I think that it must portray Michael as a shadow of his former self. The death of his daughter brings him to the realization that, rather than protecting his family, he has destroyed it. I just don't see him as having the emotional and psychological strength in the least to be involved in any further family machinations.
