Imagine one day instead of making The Godfather Part IV... Paramount Pictures decides to REMAKE The Godfather Part I !!!!! Would you accept such an idea like that??? I personally would NEVER accept such an idea like that because of many reasons!!!! *What about you? I really would like to know WHY? after you vote... *Don Zadjali

In theory, it seems like a good idea. However, with the way some movies are remade, it would be a disgrace to Francis Ford Coppola's work with the original. I just don't feel confident about who would be selected for the cast, or the way they would go about it.
Another thing, I don't want the GF to be glamorized like everything else in today's media. The GF is a great legend, something that should be referred to, but not the way the media does it. Kinda like the Holy Bible.

A GF IV is okay for me, but a remake isn't. The best part about GF I and II were the actors, who were some of the best of the last 30 years (Brando, De Niro, Pacino, Caan, Duvall,...). Plus they played their top part in The GF, an accumulation of quality Actors whoressemble them could play a younger version of the characters in flashbacks in GF IV, but they could never replace the originals. And who should direct it? Scorsese, Sergio Leone (is he still alive), ... ??
See, we can act as smart as we want, but at the end of the day, we still follow a guy who fucks himself with kebab skewers.

Leone is no longer with us sadly, he died in the late 80's.

He would have been about 60, as he was born in 1929. Such a shame, he's one of my favourite directors of all time.

I agree with whoever said placing it in another setting, kind of like some directors do with Shakespeare. The themes and basic plot outline could be the same, but it would have to be completely different than the original movie or else it would be suicide for who ever was involved. I could see this story happening in a political family... something similar to the Kennedy's. Or make it really different, and set it in an African tribe with subtitles or something like that. Or communist Russia. Or fuedal Japan. The GF themes can play out for a family in any time period, so I think something like this could work. But you'd have to distance yourself from the original. I mean this is THE most loved movie in American cinema... It could be called, "A re-imagining of the themes present in The Godfather placed in a completely different setting."

I don't see any reason to remake the Godfather. The only films that I think are worth remaking are either those that are potentially great but let down by pretty stupid flaws, or those that are so badly dated that a modern version would improve them. Films like White Heat and The Public Enemy spring to mind. For me, The Godfather is about as perfect as a film can get. So there is no room for improvement there. And as for it's age, I would say that generally films were much better in the 70s than they are today, so a modern approach to it wouldn't neccesarily be able to improve it. Plus the fact that Pacino, Duvall, Caan and Brando are among the best actors ever, and to replace them with an equally talented cast would be nigh on impossible.

Nice to see other people in favour of a complete "makeover", shows I'm not completely mad If it was going to be a "regular" remake (ie cover only the events of GFI, no rise to power stuff) then perhaps it could open with the attack on Bonasera's daughter (a very dramatic opening scene, two tough guys beating up a poor defenceless maiden). This would help the audience to understand Bonasera's anger. It should also show the actual job being done by Gatto and his men, and show Bonasera weeping with joy when he reads about it - i.e. the audience sees the whole Bonasera story from start to finish, rather than having it feature in two scenes only. Another idea is to tell the same story as GFI, but shot from different points of view. So we don't see the horse in the bed or the hit on Vito, but we do see Gatto being approached and converted by Barzini's men, and Sonny conducting the war while Micheal is in Sicily. This would avoid the difficulty of re-making classic scenes while remaining faithful to the original film.

Apple I like it. Get the same person who did the costumes for "Cats" and have about fifty "fishes" all hanging in front of a big blue backdrop and we can then lower Luca's Body into the "sea" to a snappy tune.
