The Godfather is a family story, without getting into the specifics of crime.
Goodfellas gets deeply into the crime specifics - it also shows family life, but only in the internal world of gangsters. Remember Karen commenting - how they only went to each other's houses.
The great thing about the Sopranos is that we get to see these mobsters as seriously tough guys in matters of crime - but you see their characters in social situations.
Like with Silivio and Tony attending their daughters' soccer and other sports games.
The thing with Silvio is how calm the guy is in matters of business - blowing up Artie's restaurant and whacking Jimmy Alteri.
But competitive sports - fuggedaboditt!!
At the soccer game he threatens to stick the whistle right up the referee's ass if he gives out more yellow cards to his daughter's team.
Then in the Executive Game - he totally goes bananas when he starts losing. Who could forget
Silvio's comments to the Beviluqa kid who innocently tries to clean up.
" I like cheese at my feet, I put it in my socks at night so they smell like your sister's crotch in the morning" and
" Hey you, CHEESE FUCK - bring me some food"
Then there's Paulie - in Season 1 I could only think of him in terms of a psycho.
But remember in Season 2 how we find out the guy's been paying for repairs to the local church
for years. (OK, he did have certain motives about heading upwards when he dies!)
In one therapy session with Melfi Tony complains about how Paulie annoys him sometimes, such as his humming of TV adverts all the time. Also at Christmas Paulie apparently sends everyone in the crew typed reports about what his nephews
and nieces have been doing in the past 12 months.
Like - who got a hole in one and who got into West Point. Though Paulie doesn't have his own kids, I'm sure with his 'earnings' that he has helped make it possible for his nieces and nephews to do what they're doing.
Then there's Silvio's Michael Corleone impressions. Genius!
