Yea, I pretty much did the same as you (set my players before the the rainout) but I was undecided on my pitching staff. I had to run outside a couple of times to make sure everything out there was alright!

Does going outside count as research time?

It does if you picked the Cubbies I guess...

Go ahead, deal with the PM Showers tomorrow... I went w/ a more Party-Cloudy type of game...

Exactly. What I predicted would happen did.

What I hoped for as a result of those predictions didn't.

EDIT: Well, That's not exactly right, either. I predicted you would take the Yanks PS. In retrospect, it's a good thing I missed on that one. The Pedro prediction was made after I knew you picked Boston.

DAMN

I was sure DB was gonna take the Cubs.

So DB: Did you take SF because you figured that I figured you would take the Cubs and I wouldn't because I would think you did and you wanted to try to take the same PS as me?

Yes!

I took SF because of a few reasons:
- Showers between 2 - 8 PM here
- Winds blowing out at 20+ mph even if it wasn't raining (last time winds were this strong, Clement got rocked for 10 runs by the 5th inning, before the game was called)
- Lastly, what you said... I figured that you would think I would take the Cubbies (and I was going to until a little past midnight, central time)

If you are going to gamble you have to take a pitching staff that can give you both games or also gamble that they could put you in negative numbers! That is the real gamble if you want to get ahead! Sure it would have been sweeter if some better players had played that second game and the Yankees took both games. As it was we did see a young player pitch one hell of a game!

Don't forget to include the fact - that though all these weeks you have come to admire and respect the first half champion (which by the way nobody can ever take away) and so in this vein you are - even if subconciously - emulating your idol and mentor.

PL - did I get that right? That is what you said in your PM to me wasn't it?

Subconsciously emulating my mentor, huh?? Of course, that goes without saying.

Big game today... safe to say that I'll be watching the first Cubbies game intently. I should watch the second game also, but I might be too frustrated after the first one. These are, after all, the Cubbies.

Not exactly. One of the fundamentals of the game is to identify which players will play and go all out, which is easy enough to do. Just pick players from teams who still have something at stake. That's no guarantee that they'll do well, of course, but at least it pretty much guarantees that they'll play.

I'm not sure what you mean by "it was who could get the most points from what we had to work with". We all have the same thing to "work with", don't we? Isn't that what the game is all about?

And the "mumbo jumbo bullshit"; I'm not sure what you mean by that, either.

And no, I don't think everyone factored in all these things. Clearly, based on some of the picks, everyone did not.

More fundamentals: The basis for picking a PS in a doubleheader is the positive 54 you start off with before the first pitch is even thrown.

Even if you give up 7 or 8 runs and 20 or so hits, with a decent strikeout-walk ratio, and at least one win, you wind up with more points than you would for a well pitched one game win.

It's far from an all or nothing proposition.

Finally. Something I agree with.

We haven't (we only started playing together since baseball started), but might. I don't know shit about basketball, but I usually build a team and leave it unless someone gets hurt. Don't spend much time w/ it. But maybe this year, if there's interest, we can do basketball...

I don't want to talk about it further here in the baseball thread, however.

It's the same story as yesterday: I would have taken the Cubs, except I was sure he was gonna take the Cubs, and if we both took the Cubs, then I'd have no chance to gain points.

Actually, I wish he had taken the Cubs, 'cause I'm gonna lose anyway, but at least I would have had some excitement, being able to root for a big inning or two from Pittsburgh.

No more daily line-up changes now - no more last night tweaking (well of lineups)

I don't know about anyone else but setting today was really tough - with the playoffs starting in a few days and games meaning nothing for a good many teams and pitchers being rested. My first PS choice was the SCRubbies, but the 2 Ws and Houston lose, I heard late that Wood is not pitching today and will start Tuesday, so they were out. SF conceding the home field to and all agreed NOT to play the game tomorrow so they will not have the travel day - so they were out. A lot of other thoughts went into it also - but in the end I took St. Louis - in short so I would have one more day to talk about my Woody. :p I sit squarely between Pork and Satan so I need my Woody to go really deep today.

Ok now that I got that out of my system. I also picked a few Phillies. One being the Atlanta game means nothing to the Braves, I would hope a lot of starters don't play and today is the last day for the Vet so they are having a big boo-yah down there so the Phils want to go out with a Win. We'll see if that strategy works out well or not.

Funny thing about the Vet. The staduim before the Vet was Connie Mack. On it's last day many of the fans came to the game with tools since they were aloud to take the stadium apart for souveniers. One guy went to the bathroom in the 7th inning of that game and came back to find his seat gone - true story. They even took urinals - go figure. People were leaving with seats, padding from the dugout - the benches - the dirt - the police were able to save home plate but just barely. A helicopter was supposed to come into the stadium and using some wire pick up home plate and fly over the the new stadium - when all the fans rushed the field at the end and the helicopter tried to get somewhat near the stadium the dust etc was all over they had to call it off. Leave it to the Philly fans - you can tell your friends and neighbors that story over dinner now.

So I guess all that is left is to watch the games and see where we all end up. DB you got first so you are the 2nd half champion and nobody will be able to take that away from you - are you gonna make up a new avatar now ? Of course don't get too full of yourself - does anybody really remember who won the first half ?

All I remember from the first half is that I started 10 days late - have I ever mentioned that before ?

No. No, I don't believe I do....

I'm under the impression that has given up on everyone else playing but the top 3. While it is apparent that those are the only ones that really have a shot at winning right now, you can't discount the fact that I have been making a very strong though futile attempt at conquering 4th place and keeping my bronze in the OVERALL points category - because THAT'S what really matters, right?

Well, I never made it home yesterday at all. So today, on this last day of baseball, I should crash and burn pretty good with a ton of Cubs/LA/SF offensive players that I had for yesterday's doubleheaders. I still had a shot at tackling the Pork only lagging behind 31 points but with MY roster today it is gonna be tough.

Bear with me guys ...last regular game of the season and the end of rostering and late night tweaking...while Big Daddy is dancing a jig, I think I am getting a bit misty.

On 2nd thought, I think I AM gonna play next year

I have a tendency to wear my heart on my sleeve -
I have a history of taking off my shirt.....

Hey, Bad Daddy, you mean you're not making a drive over to Vet stadium and get your hands on any souveniers. I thought for sure you would at least put a bid in on the Liberty Bell. And those seats going for $280.00 are a bargain. They'd make a good addition to your next bar-b-cue.

And what's this about the Braves not playing their starters! If I don't get to see Vinny play today I'm holding you personally responsible.

Bethie..what the hell?

Trading in Bon Jovi for Vinny? Your brain HAS gone soft.

However - making the move from rock stars to baseball players is ALWAYS good in my book. I have taught you well, Grasshoppa

Better soft brains then soft......oh, never mind! Jon baby is always #1. I'll never kick him out of my bed for putting crumbs in it. I guess Vinny is the Flava of the month. Or as Geoff put it, squimish! :p What is the weird hand shake, arm smacking thingy dingy Vinny does? I gotta learn that. He can slap me around anytime.

DB - what's this you picking the Cards purely defensively? Admit it - YOU FEAR ME - 150 points is still not enough you are not even being man enough to give me a chance to catch you. You have to take my PS knowing I can't make up all the points on offensive players alone - you damn sissy boy. :p

I might have to tell Beth all the other things you said about your game today now.

Actually PL is gonna be looking very closely at the Cards game today - he is surrounded by a couple of guys with Woody

Oh that doesn't sound very good at all - does it? :p

Is there any NFL players named Wood, Woody or Colon ? If not we are gonna be stuck for awhile ....
