I think I will leave that one alone.

You came to the right place, DB...
First of all, I'm assuming that money is involved here. If so, then ideally, to a certain extent anyway, it should depend on the competition in each pool.
If, for, example, I knew that in one pool everyone was just flipping coins, and there was a chance that people would be picking 16s to beat 1s, or 15s to beat 2s, I would go with what I felt was my best shot.
But that's probably not the case. So I would make different picks for each of the pools I was in, putting what I felt was my best in the pool that was worth the most, and so on.
I would do it that way based on the following logic:
If I'm in 4 different pools, and use the same picks for each, then I will either win all 4, or win none. If I use 4 different picks, I have no chance to win all 4, but I have a much better chance of winning one out of the four.
Per dollar invested, I believe that my expected value would be greater doing it that way.
It's the same as if I played the daily number in a state lottery game. If I bought 4 tickets on the same number, I would win four times the amount of the prize if that number came in. But if I played 4 different numbers, I'd have a four times greater chance of winning one quarter of that amount.
Given that the payoffs in these things are so large, I'd rather have the four times greater chance of winning the smaller amount.

Good points, plaw and yes, my hypothetical question is not really hypothetical and money is involved! I know, rationally, you are correct - you and I being like-minded in terms of numbers, expected value and such. My gut says though, that it's sort of pansy to turn in different brackets in different pools. I don't know if it's my conscience or whatnot, but for some reason, I feel uneasy about turning in a bracket that I don't feel is my best pick set. That's just something I have to get over. In the end, it's all about strategy. Just like in fantasy baseball or basketball, I might pick a team towards the end that might not be the best team possible but makes sense in a tight race (just like the end of the first half of basketball). Choosing different brackets is just another strategy. It's just like in investing - you have to diversify to hedge your risks. Any other opinions? I'm sure some of you are running into the same situation. You may not analyze it as much as plaw and me (who over-analyze everything ), but let me know what you think.

Pansy, Schmansy.
This is about money. The more possible combinations you have going, the greater your chances of winning, albeit it winning less than if you played one bracket in many different pools.
Look at it this way: If you're only gonna play one combo, find one pool where the entry fee is larger and the prizes are bigger, and go with that one.
But if you're in more than one, it's silly to play the same entry.
If this were a game where there were only, I dunno, 20, 30, or 40 possible outcomes, and you felt strongly about one, and the payoff was greater than 20, 30, or 40 to 1, that would be one thing.
But there are how many different possible ways are there to fill out a 64 team bracket. Jeeze... 2 to the 64th power (I think) in the first round alone. That's like more than a trillion combinations right there. Even if you throw out the combos where a 16 seed beats a 1, still...
Even if you say there will be no upsets until the 7 vs. the 10, and the 8 vs. the 9, there's eight of those matchups, so the chances of getting them all right are 255-1. And we're not even out of the first round. wait until the later rounds, when it gets harder.
This game is basically all luck. Play the percentages, man.
Now, could we get back to the nipple talk?
