However, in the same game, Woody makes an errant throw to first on a blooper up the middle. The guy is safe on first and eventually scores. That's an unearned run. Doesn't make sense to me.
A wild pitch is a pitch. Earned run. A wild throw is an error. Unearned run. That's the logic. But I agree. If the pitcher makes the error, the run should be earned. As my idol Bill James once said, "A lot of what we perceive as pitching is really defense". Have you ever read anything by him, BTW. A numbers guy like you would love him. Sorry for your Nets getting bumped, plaw. 2 straight trips to the Finals is nothing to sneeze at. Thanks. I see a good battle shaping up between FS, SC, and LD. I like LD to catch 'em both. I still think Pork is doing a great job as Commish. I'll reserve my opinion until I see if he congratulates me when I move back into first. :p

What is really ironic? I usually make my picks first thing in the morning (in case I get hit by the proverbial bus in the afternoon, I will at least have THAT day covered ) I picked Cleveland and was stressing last night about weather and looked to change, but couldn't figure out who was better. So basically, I chucked it and just went with it. Who knew I wouldn't be alone today.... My Crabby visitor? Plane touches down a bit after 2:30 here. She's here till Sunday. Progress reports? I am sure she will fill you in. I'm the quiet one, remember? I don't talk much unless it is to talk baseball smack - which these days...eeeeeek... Sidenote: People I know ask how I can allow a perfect stranger into my house that I've never met. They tell me what if "she" is really a big burly "he"? Then I remind them it works both ways. How does SHE know that I am not a big burly "he"?? Reminds me of that Aerosmith video where the guy is talking to the phone sex operater picturing a svelte, beautiful woman in lingerie lying on her bed. Then WE see the real thing - a hugely obese gross woman, ironing clothes and holding a crying kid.

Dear Commish, 7 names, but I'm in 8th place. Is the 7th place guy just beating me on a pick he did a month ago? If so, I really suck.

Said he had a slip because of some birthday celebrating, said him and a few other of his financial co-workers went down to the stock Exchange to watch the numbers change. Such the life. :p He says this year he will be the first champion of both halves. Don't let that bother you though - you are #1 in Bass Fishing. And not that anyone cares but I have been changing my roster while I could - my point total would place me at 4th place overall. The new work responsibilites with my job really starts next Wednesday so I may have jumped the gun a bit on retiring by a few weeks. Oh well. Hey DB - happen to see both of your cuz's on AI last night Camille (she sounded horrible) and Jas - I think they were saying Happy Birthday to you but it was hard to tell. Watching it last night showed how truly bad all the guys were in that show this year - really they all pretty much sucked.

Wait... Doesn't everyone?? Originally posted by Big Daddy Don: He says this year he will be the first champion of both halves. You forgot the part about how, after I win both halves, I will retire with a Lou Gehrig speech. Originally posted by Big Daddy Don: Hey DB - happen to see both of your cuz's on AI last night Camille (she sounded horrible) and Jas - I think they were saying Happy Birthday to you but it was hard to tell. Thoughts on last night's finale (I had it taped, but I didn't check my tape and it only taped half) - Fantasia's performance the night before, especially on the last song, was great. - How much did they pay Jennifer Love Hewitt to come out of hiding? Took the twins for a walk. - I did see Camille and Jasmine. You know, those two make me feel like an old uncle. Jasmine makes me feel like the proud old uncle. Camille makes me feel like the dirty old uncle. And yes - they were singing happy birthday to me. - I don't think Camille sounded horrible. I just think she doesn't know how to sing into a microphone. She has some sort of projecting problem. - Paula Abdul also took the twins out for a walk. - And now, here's Clay Aiken with the counter guy from the Greensboro 7-11 who once sold Fantasia a Diet Pepsi... - Kelly Clarkson looks like the hot girl from Shallow Hal. - And... I don't know what else happened. Ran out of tape. Who won?? (Seriously, what else happened? )

TIVO rocks - I have two of them, doesn't sound like it does much but once you get it you can't imagine not having it. For AI, I missed the entire first hour although I don't really think I missed much. I did see Reuben and Kelly - Kelly did look a bit hotter than the past, Ruben looked like well he looked like Ruben  , still no personality - they Ruben, Kelly, Fantasia and Diana sung The Impossible Dream. Then all this year's 12 finalists sung a big medley to all the guest judges, that was painful in spots but seeing JPL and Matt again - uggh the men on the show were brutal. Guess they were ramping up for the big AI tour this summer - better hurry up and order your tickets now. Fantasia sung that I Believe song I think twice and Diana sung it once - ok so I am already sick of that song - five times in two nights. Diana was a gracious loser - I was hoping to see a cat fight or something. And I hear you about Paula bringing out the twins it is just a shame she has to talk though. Basically you missed very little - but still no excuse for not getting TIVO.

This may have come up before, but I don't remember.
Hit batsmen should have the same positive/negative effect on offense/pitching as a walk.
Offensively, it's certainly somewhat of an art, and the same players have the highest HBP total very year.
From a pitching POV, it's something negative that the pitcher has complete control of, so he should certainly lose a point.
And if I lose this game by one point at season'e end, it will be because Derek Jeter was hit by a pitch on what would have been ball four. So instead of getting a point for the BB, he gets nothing.

Originally posted by plawrence: From a pitching POV, it's something negative that the pitcher has complete control of, so he should certainly lose a point. First off, you mean "WHINE ALERT". Secondly, apparently the pitcher doesn't have "complete control of" a wild pitch otherwise he wouldn't have hit the batter. Tho, sometimes it is purposeful, for retaliation; but in this case, I have no idea whether it was or not cuz I didn't watch the whole game. If it was intentional, I do agree it should be -1 like a walk. Anyway - You're bitching and whining about a potential one point rather than taking responsibility for your piss-poor offense for the day (except for the LUCKY Tony Clark and Jeter picks)? Originally posted by plawrence: Yup. 32 is a tough number to beat. This point is apparently moot. :p
