Most DVD players will play VCDs. There are actually standalone VCD players but you don't see them in the United States.
They definitely lack the quality of DVDs but usually are better looking than VHS tapes.
I'm thinking about making my own GF VCD set once my DVDs arrive, so I can insert the cut scenes in the proper places.
