Short (two word) answer: Um, no.

Longer answer: As long as he faces at least one batter, and leaves the game trailing, and his team never ties the game or takes the lead, a pitcher can be charged with the loss.

He can walk the first batter of the first inning, be removed, and if that guys scores, the run is charged to him.

If the relief pitchers goes on to give up 9 more runs, and the score is 10-0, and the losing team comes back to make the final score 10-9, the first pitcher who only faced one batter and was charged with only one run is still the losing pitcher.

That would not be true if the SP was lifted for an injury after walking the first batter. Even if he was charged for the one earned run, if the next pitcher gives up 15 ERs, I'm certain the reliever would get the loss, not the starter.

Well, there aren't too many things I would bet my life on, but I'm pretty certain about that.

I don't think injury has anything to do with it.

If the starter allows the first batter to reach base and then leaves the because of an injury, and his team goes on to lose 15-0, the starter is still the loser.

If a SP leaves a game with his team trailing, regardless of when, and his team never ties the score or goes ahead, the SP is the losing pitcher.

The official scorer does, however, have the option of awarding a win at his discretion, though.

Let's say the home is trailing 2-0 after three innings. A relief pitcher comes in in the 4th, and gives up 3 more runs, so it's now 5-0 going to the bottom of the 4th.

In the bottom of the 4th, the home team pinch hits for the reliever, scores 6 runs, and takes the lead, 6-5.

Those 6 runs belong to the relief pitcher, and if the home team goes on to win without ever giving up the lead, he is technically entitled to the win.

But if a second reliever comes in and finishes the game, and shuts out the visiting team for the 5th thru the 9th, or pitches 2 or 3 shutout innings or allows only one or two runs, the official scorer may, at his discretion, award the win to the second reliever because the first one did not pitch effectively, even though he left the game on the winning side of the ledger.

Of course, Boston was gonna rest some guys cuz for them it didn't mean anything - for real. That's what made picking Sox offense so tough, cuz hardly any were destined to play two games. Hell, even O's were gonna get some rookies some at-bats...

This late in the season, if October isn't in the team's future, it's all a matter of getting the rookies some work. And for October teams, that AND keeping the regulars sharp; and, not wearing out your good pitchers.

But, to actually pick the O's PS over Boston, to me -- even on the road -- was kinda crazy.

Loretta got on w a throwing error with one out and went all the way to 3rd. He scored on a single by Rich Aurilia. That run was unearned (since he got on by an error)... then another single followed by Nevin. Then Ojeda followed with a fielders choice ground out. That should of been the third out and every run that scores after that are unearned.

After reading thru the play-by-play, it looks like 1 ER to me. MAYBE 2 ERs at the most (it does get confusing sometimes).

Ojeda's homer in the 8th is obvious. (That name sounds familiar )

But the 4th inning is such:
