I hate these guys who don't take the game seriously and don't change their lineup every day.
So do I

So here's the sad story. Sad for me, anyway.

The GF and I went out last night about 6:00 PM to meet some friends at their place in the city and then go out to dinner. I hadn't change my team yet, because with the Balt-Bost game still going on, I didn't know if I'd still be in the lead when the game was over. If I was trailing, and by how much, would determine whether or not I tried to figure which PS DB would take today (based on the fact that he was now in the lead) and maybe take a different one, or, if DB was second (and by how much) try to figure out if he was far enough behind to be "unpredictable", or if he was close enough to be less unpredictable, and try to figure out which PS he would take in either of those conditions, and pick the same one.

Also, it was my intention, to the extent that it was reasonable and possible, to try and use offensive players from the six teams who still might be playing meaningful games today, but because their games weren't over yet when I went out, I didn't know which teams they would be.

So we get home about 11:30, I take care of a few preliminaries around the house, and sit down and start doing my "research".

The way I do it does takes about 10 minutes, and I'm about halfway through when I hear a voice from the bedroom:

"Paaaaauuuul.....Are you on the computer again?"

Now, it's impossible to give intonation to words that you write, so I can only describe her tone. It was kinda like the one a mother would use on her bad boy when she was asking him if he had just raided the cookie jar.

Well, to make a long and rather painful story shorter at this point, a lovely little argument ensued in which I was accused of being obsessed and compulsive about the internet in general and fantasy sports in particular, and I, in my defense, accused her of being compulsive about neatness, which culminated in her throwing the can of my bathroom room spray off the terrace when I told her how crazy it made me that the can always had to be on top of my box of baby wipes, never next to it, and how, god forbid, if I ever didn't leave it on top, she would be sure to put it there.

Now. Any of you guys who are reading this that are or ever were married or in a live-in relationship with a female, know that women argue with emotion and men argue with facts. Also, as you might guess, I'm a pretty good "arguer" (or at least I think I am). So 45 minutes or so later (now about 12:30) I've pretty much gotten the best of it and calmed her down.

Except, now two rather large problems presented themselves:

1) If, after sucessfully arguing that I am not compulsive or obsessed, I look like a real fucking idiot if I go back to the computer now, and

2) She's looking for "make-up sex"

For those of you guys who are not or have never been in a steady relationship, "make-up sex" is one the major benefits of an argument.

I first heard the term on a Seinfeld episode, when Jerry mentions it to George, and George asks, in his rather bemused way, "They have that?"

Well, they really do "have that", and it's usually hotter and more passionate than "regular" sex, because both parties are in the throes of emotion after the argument.

So, I take care of that little bit of business, but I'm still faced with the first problem and now it's almost 1:00 AM.

And since women like a bit of cuddling after the act, I'm really up the creek now.

So I roll the dice. I figure I'll lie there and try to stay awake for an hour or so and then sneak out, or, I'll fall asleep and my usually reliable internal alarm clock will wake me up by 3:00 AM in time to change my team.

I pretty much had no choice.

Well, you can easily figure out what happened. I woke up all right, but not until 3:08.

So that's my tale of woe. I tell it not because I seek sympathy (God knows I won't get any here), but as a form of catharsis and from the possibly misguided notion that a few of you may be interested.

I have no one to blame for my predicament but myself. I almost always change my team in the daytime, and tweak it late at night if any tweaking is necessary, and I should have done so yesterday.

But not knowing if I'd be playing "defense" against DB, or "offense", coupled with the fact that I wanted to try and use only players from games that counted and I didn't know which games they would be, made me think that picking a team early in the day would be a waste of time, so I didn't.

Now I can only cross my fingers and hope that my 32 point lead holds up.

Umm... How??

O's are out of it, doesn't mean shit to them. Not one game meant shit to them all season!

Of course, Boston was gonna rest some guys cuz for them it didn't mean anything - for real. That's what made picking Sox offense so tough, cuz hardly any were destined to play two games. Hell, even O's were gonna get some rookies some at-bats...

This late in the season, if October isn't in the team's future, it's all a matter of getting the rookies some work. And for October teams, that AND keeping the regulars sharp; and, not wearing out your good pitchers.

But, to actually pick the O's PS over Boston, to me -- even on the road -- was kinda crazy.

So maybe that's why I'm always 3rd... I'm not crazy enough!
Baltimore had a lot more to play for: PRIDE. The chance to beat the big, bad Red Sox in front of two big home crowds. And they showed it by pretty much playing their regulars. Boston was playing for absolutely nothing.

Plus, if you look at Balt's roster, you'll see that the really don't have a lot of "September call-ups" to play instead of their regulars anyway.

And, obviously, it was impossible to figure who, if anyone, from Boston was gonna play both games.

I figured that it was a lot more likely that the Balt guys I picked were gonna play both games (and 4 out of 6 of them did) than anyone I could pick from Boston. I mean, look who played both ends for the Sox: I think it was just Roberts, Kapler, and Cabrerra, three guys that no one picked.

So with 6 O's in my line-up and Mirabelli, I'm not about to take the Boston PS.

I figured DB was gonna view it the same way.

Remember what he said about the Det-TB DH the other day

That's the way I figured it, that's the way I figured he was gonna figure it, and that's the other reason I took Baltimore.

The only surprise was that he took more guys from Boston than Baltimore, and, I think if you asked him, he would tell you that that was a mistake.

The bottom line, though, is that I don't recall a doubleheader when DB took a PS from a non-DH team. Assuming that he was gonna do so yesterday, given the offensive players that figured to play, Balt was the choice I thought he would make.

I could, of course, have DB's figuring all wrong.

Maybe he thought that Boston players were the better offensive picks and I would figure it the same way and go with the Boston PS, so in semi-desperation he would go "unpredictable" and take Baltimore.

Or maybe he figured the Pitching the same way I did, and took more Bost players than Balt players, thinking that he would go "unpredictable" that way.

We'll have to see if he weighs in with a comment on this.

And then there's the Pedro Astacio and his 10+ E.R.A. factor. If Schilling was pitching, it might have been a different story altogether.

SINGING: Here's my story it is sad but true.
It's about a girl that I once knew
She came home and called me out
we had a fight all around the house.

Hey, Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa,
whoa,whoa,
Hey hey, whoa whoa whoa.....
Dumb princess

She pissed and moaned about everything I do
she even pissed about all of you,
She took the game and put it down
now I am the lowest guy in town

Hey, hey, whoa whoa whoa, hey hey whoa whoa ...... whoa Hey.... Dumb Princess

all she kept doing was walking all around
and she never stop putting me down,
then took my can of spray
SHE threw it..... on the ground today!

hey hey hey....whoa whoa whoa whoa

then looked for makeup sex
Gee guys..... she the best in town.

Hey hey whoa whoa whoa whoa Hey hey whoa whoa

she likes to roam around
going all over the town
giving rub downs...
to every guy.... that comes around
Then she took my heart
.... and she smashed it down
so far down that it couldn't be found.

......she goes out with lots of guys.

Now the moral of the story is sad but true
I am addicted to fantasy sports thats true
all I want is to play around
with all you friends from other towns

hey hey who whoa whoa hey hey whoa whoa whoa hey hey whoa whoa hey....Dumb Princess...

plaw -

Your description of last night's events is hysterical. What makes it so funny is that what you wrote (about relationships, arguments, etc.) is so true.

One word of advice, though - IF you don't hold on to first place today DON'T make the G.F. follow the same path as the aerosol can!

This just in - the building's security cameras caught some of the action:

plaw on the net

GF gets angry about plaw's internet addiction

plaw fights back

plaw has a dilemma - to kiss and make up OR go back to the net

they make up

plaw falls asleep afterwards

plaw wakes up, late

plaw writes about it explaining what happened

Three Words:

T - M - I.

Too Much Information!

DB - I am still rooting for you. Please don't make this "tale of woe" be a missed opportunity for you!!

For the record: plaw's account is not typical for ALL women. :p

Some of us don't feel we compete with the internet for time; some of us DONT have a tone and boss our men around; and surprisingly, not ALL of us like to cuddle after sex. For those of us who don't smoke, our options are a bit limited. Sleeping or eating is good, I guess.

I just celebrated my 17th anniversary of being legally wed this week. I must be doing SOMETHING right. Maybe it is not naming or categorizing the sex

I should've just read SC's condensed version. Where the hell was the WHINE ALERT??

Plaw, if it only takes "10 minutes" (liar!) then you still could've set the best lineup you can early, and THEN gone and changed it later on. No excuse at all -- especially if you're still in a race on the last day of the season -- especially if you're going out for the evening and don't know what could happen or when you might be home, or how tired you may be -- especially since you may also have wanted to tweek your football games as well....

If DB wins, there will be no asterisk in the final standings! :p

Good going Pee- You win again!

I think you were let off the hook, or as they say you fell in a pile of shit and came out smelling like roses.

Then again, Pee may not ever see this if she doesn't give his computer back.

Well, another year is over...thanks to everyone for a great time!

Oh, sorry SC, I thought that you would have it. I guess you have to blame SF and LA.

I Never said there should or would be. I was fully prepared to take my lumps like a man.

As we talked about earlier in the week...You gotta show up every day to play. That's more important than who you pick. This is a game of stamina as much as anything.

Actually, I almost feel guilty about winning, and the events of last night really do detract from my win in my mind, hard as that may seem to believe.

[Note to DB: I had reached the point in my reasearch where I had narrowed down my pitching choice to either San Fran (Schmidt), or Pittsburgh (Perez).]

Yeah Right......

That is our Pee, true to the end. I have to say there are many, many times that I just can't believe everything I hear from you Pee.

But still I can't figure out, why I am disappointed in the final few weeks of the season.

Geeesch.....its 2 A.M. and there's nothing to update on the p.c.

Congratulations, plaw, on your successful defense of your first place finish. Whats more important is you finished the season "with a life". :p

I'm happy with my finish in the standings.... I was in the top 10% again, and due to having a lot of time on my hands these past three weeks I was the top scorer in that 3 week period.

More than where I finished, I had fun playing the game, and this thread brought me a lot of laughs. Thank you to all my fellow participants for that fun.

It did, but, last year was more familial to me. It could just be me, but, I just wasn't into it this year as much as last year. (Tho, I think that was life in general, not just this game ) BUT - watch out in 2005!!!!!

Yeah. I could have followed the can of room spray off the terrace. I may not be allowed to play next year.

Great emoticons in your other post, BTW. She said the guy at the computer looked just like me, except he had too much hair.

I was into the game as much as last year, but I agree that something was missing from the thread and all the posting that made last year more fun..

I think it was Big Daddy. Seriously.

My Congratulations to plaw and all the players. What a stoopida focking game.

It was ...... interesting. I can plainly see that I don't have the sustained interest in baseball to play competitively. I could never remember who I picked. I see that you have to dedicate time on a daily basis too. Weekly games are more my speed; golf and football.

Thanks for the disrespect and sarcasm. Good luck next year.

So, in other words, there's a chance that you might not play next year?

Ten Things I Think I Think... (ala Peter King)

1 - Plaw has make-up sex in 30 minutes. Good Lord, why do I have this unending need to always do the math??? Like Buffy said - TMI!!!!

2 - The Cubs stink. I was actually at the game yesterday. It was so much fun booing LaTroy. If Sammy was there, I would have booed him too. Break up the team (except the pitching staff).

3 - Baltimore vs. Boston pitching staff debate - I don't remember why I picked Boston. Actually, I do remember why... This time, it was a pitching staff first decision. I liked the two that Baltimore was trotting out more than the Boston two. I was close enough so I wouldn't have to play unpredictable. Boston players weren't playing both games. The list goes on and on. In the end, I would have rather not picked either, but oh well. BTW, I picked more Boston offensive players because they were better - and because of the chance that they may play both. High risk/high reward. What I didn't count on was some of them not playing either game.

4 - I'm back on track in the Football Pick'em game, but I still can't wrap my brain around the Challenge game. I'm glad that baseball is finally done because I can start concentrating on football.

5 - I agree with the ones who said the game was less fun this year. No Buffy, no Big Daddy...

6 - The Bears will not score another touchdown this year.

7 - Ahman Green is killing me.

8 - I'm still thinking about fantasy basketball. I'm not going to play in Pat's league. I may not play in the ESPN league. I don't know if you guys remember, but that game wasn't any fun. It really wasn't.

9 - Thanks everyone for another great season.

DMC - New rookie. Play next year!
MC - You brought out many laughs... oops, your game brought out many laughs! :p
CB - You still there?
SC - You had a nice run there at the end, SC.
FS - I hope your soapbox isn't very tall because with you standing on it so much, you might get a lot of nosebleeds at high altitudes. :p
CC - Really close there Crabby! Good run!
JG - We should name third place after Pork! :p

Which leads me to...

#10 - Congrats to plawrence. You know, this season very closely followed the real baseball season. I was the Cubs who could just never get it on track, but was still competing. I had a very good run close to the end, but stumbled in the final days. You were the Cards of this year - led from almost start to finish. Stumbled in the end, but pulled out the win anyways. You were just too tough this year. Great job!

Now that my MWA has officially congratulated me, I can oficially thank him and everyone else for their congratulations.

It was another grind, another marathon, another six months of torture.

It seems like only a week or two ago that I was waking up at 4:00 AM to watch the Yanks-TB in Japan. Where did the time go?

Anyway, it's been fun. Can't wait until next year, assuming I'm allowed to play.

Sorry, I call them as I see them.
And from what Pee is saying with his Girlfriend,
I must be seeing them really clear!

and you are also right, but where I come from they use the word "CHOKE"

and I don't mean "Choke on this". so don't take it the wrong way, even tho...where is that guy grabing his crotch when you need him?
Till next year, if there is a next year- (insert roster crowing here)

You may have to change your team name to Blue Ball Players, after she cuts you off!

Or maybe the next girlfriend will be a baseball fan. Maybe you better start looking for a replacement, you have all fall and winter before the next season starts. Good Luck and stay away from the railings.

You know what's the most surprising thing about FS's comment...

No, not that it came from a guy in 5th place...

What surpised me was that he spelled it correctly.

Dam. :p
