Here's yours, DB.

But for the grace of the schedule, you could be 2-9.

Couldn't get away from those two wins I hadda give you. Your 81 points in Week 7 and 105 in Week 8 were the highest in the league.

Code:
Week Opponent Result Score
-
  1 IM Loss 34-61
  2 TU Loss 41-45
  3 SP Loss 63-68
  4 FC Loss 56-63
  5 LD Loss 73-81
  6 PL Loss 57-81
  7 JG Win 81-48
  8 BD Win 105-100
  9 DJ Loss 76-83
 10 RB Loss 88-96
 11 IM Loss 34-61

Wow.....

This little exercise really crystalized for me how much luck really is involved in this game.

I'm assuming that Yahoo sets the schedule randomly, in which case of all of the thousands and thousands of possible ways to arrange an 11 game schedule for a 12 team league where everyone plays everyone else once, the one we wound up with was no more or less likely to be our schedule than one in which DB could be 2-9 instead of 8-3, or one in which JG could be 10-1 instead of 3-8.

The flaw in my argument, of course, is that the top three scorers in the league have the best W-L records, which is as it should be, and it's easy to understand why.

If there are, let's say for simplicity, 1000 possible combinations for our schedule, there's only maybe a handful that will yield a 2-9 record for DB, who's second in the league in scoring. There would probably be several hundred that would leave him at, let's say, 7-4 or better.

Same for JG. Most of the 1000 scheduling possibilities would probably leave him at about 4-7 or worse, since he's next to last in scoring.

I just picked schedules that suited my argument.

The chances of DB being 2-9 are not the same as the chances of him being 8-3.

But still........

IM, for example, is 6-5 with 607 points scored. JG is 3-8, with only 20 fewer points. Without even looking, I'd bet that IM has won a bunch of close games when scoring relatively few points. Strictly the luck of scheduling for him.

Do the points reset for the playoffs? Is there seeding, like #1 vs #4 and #2 vs #3? Basically, how do the playoffs work?

Once the playoffs start, the top 4 are seeded by order of finish. #1 plays #4 and #2 plays #3 in Week 15 and the Week 15 winners match up in Week 16. The Week 15 losers play for 3rd in Week 16.

Last year we had 8 teams.

In the "first" bracket, it was 1 vs. 4, and 2 vs. 3 the first week. The winners met for the championship, and the losers played for third place.

In the "second" bracket, it was 5 vs 8, and 6 vs. 7. The winners met for 5th place, and the losers played for 7th.

We're not having games in Week 17.

Week 17 is generally thought of as a bad week to have playoff games, especially the final playoff game, because some teams in real life might sit out their best players because they've already clinched. How would you like to be the owner of Tom Brady or Hines Ward, make it all the way to the finals of your fantasy playoffs, only to lose in Week 17 because New England or Pittsburgh chose to sit them that week?

Moving this discussion to the football thread......

I think it's safe to say that if the top four finishers in points are the top four in W-L record, which is how it stands now, the "integrity" (and I'm using that term very loosely, for lack of a better one) of the playoffs, and the league as a whole, is maintained.

But if someone finishes in the top four in scoring and doesn't make the playoffs, and their high point total is not attributable to one or two weeks where they scored way above their norm, then I think it's safe to say that they didn't make the playoffs because of the quirks in the schedule.

What other reason could there be?

There will be a second bracket this year also as Plaw described.

Logistically that makes sense... I don't know if Yahoo's system will do it though.

I can do it manually I guess.

Then Pork has a chance to say that he didn't finish dead last! :p

No school today, so we had a 8 am practice. This was my last "real" practice. Tomorrow we have pregame, and then Thanksgiving.

My team has a tradition called "Senior Hit Day". At the last practice each season, every senior gets to pick an underclassmen to hit. You get like a 10 yd running start, while the underclassmen just stands there, waiting to get absolutely drilled.

I picked our starting fullback. He's a big kid - 6 ft, 230 lbs. He is a really good lead blocker, and he makes a lot of pancake blocks. So I wanted to give a taste of his own medicine. (I also picked him because everyday he tells me how hot my gf is )

No....

Last year those in the second bracket were playing for 5th place. There was no third week where the winner of that bracket played you.

The first four finishers are playing for 1st thru 4th, the next four finishers for 5th thru 8th only, and the last four finishers are playing for 9th thru 12th only.

If that's the case, then go for it. Tho I'd rather play the top teams :p But if not, no prob, I can then concentrate fully on b-ball. :p

Hey, I'm selective in which backs I watch, and... oh wait, we're talking about fantasy sports... okay, so uh... don't let my record fool you. I'm now a contendah! Just, about 10 weeks too late....

Remember guys, early week this week. If you want players from the Thanksgiving Day games (IND vs. DET and CHI vs. DAL), get them in your lineup.

We lost this morning, 46-15.

Final record: 4-8

Our team took a step in the right direction this year. These were our records the previous 3 years:

Freshman: 1-11
Sophomore: 0-12
Junior: 1-11

So 4-8 is an improvement. I'll know my final season stats on Monday.

I start wrestling on Monday.
