Holy Cow! At halftime I went into the other room to watch Hellboy, figuring that was it. GB 17 PtsAllow, 4 Sack, 1 Int, 2 FumRec's, 2 TD's!! More points than Bulger!! Sorry, Buff' -- it's not personal, only business! And look, I get a roommate now to keep me company! I hope you're not too messy, DJ! :p

Along with "The Department Of Useless Statistics", I have decided to create another: "The Department Of Exercises In Futility" In keeping with my theory that this game depends largely on the luck of the schedule, I decided to take a look at "Lucky Wins" and "Tough Losses" You get credit for a lucky win in a week in which your score was lower than that of more than half of the other people in the league, but you happened, by luck of the schedule, to be playing someone who you happened to have a higher score than. So, even though you would have lost to more than half of the people that week, you were lucky to win because the luck of the schedule had you playing someone you could beat. Get it? You get credit for a tough loss in a week in which your score was higher than that of more than half of the other people in the league, but you happened, by luck of the schedule, to be playing someone who happened to have a higher score than you. So, even though you would have beaten more than half of the people that week, you were unlucky to lose because the luck of the schedule had you playing someone with a higher score than you. Well, I know DB and JG get this, anyway..... So here we go..... Coulda
Actual Lucky Tough Been
Name Record Wins Losses Record
-
RB 8-4 0 1 9-3
PL 5-7 0 3 8-4
DB 9-3 1 0 8-4
FC 7-5 1 1 7-5
SP 6-6 2* 3 7-5
DJ 4-8 1 4* 7-5
BD 7-5 2 0 5-7
TU 6-6 2 1 5-7
PP 5-7 2 2 5-7
LD 5-7 2 1 4-8
IM 6-6 2 0 4-8
JG 4-8 2 1 3-9 * In week 8, both DJ and SP had higher scores than 5 other players, lower scores than 5 others, and tied one. Since SP got a win that week, I called it a lucky win. DJ lost that week, and I called it a tough loss. DJ was hurt the most. In three of his four tough losses, he beat 9/11, 8/11, and 10/11 of the other players that day. Other very brutal losses include: PL, beating 8/11 others in week 12 and losing PP, beating 10/11 others in week 2 and losing SP, beating 8/11 others in week 7 and losing TU, beating 8/11 others in week 8 and losing FC, beating 9/11 others in week 4 and losing Some very lucky wins include: BD, beating only 3/11 others in week 4 and winning PP, beating only 2/11 others in week 11 and winning JG, beating only 3/11 others in week 9 and week 12, and winning both LD, beating only 3/11 others in week 8 and winning SP, beating only 3/11 others in week 11 and winning BTW, don't think I devoted a million hours to this today. I've been tracking this stuff on a spreadsheet since week 2, when I had my first tough loss. Anyone wanna see it, PM me with your email address, and I'll send it over. (Like I'm expecting a bunch of PMs now  )

The only thing I would change is that we have a 14 team league next year and an 8 team playoff starting in Week 14. Although the teams we face twice this year was also random, I didn't like the asymmetry of the scheduling.
A 14 team league has all of us facing each other once and we slide right into the playoffs. I dont think that it is all luck. Granted, luck definetly plays a big part, but setting up a team and making key acquisitions is highly important as well. And I agree with you in that there should be a 14 team league, but I think only 6 teams should go to the playoffs. Two should have a first round bye. That would be perfect.

C'mon, DB. You disappoint me. Everything in this game is about luck? Didn't you and BD do fairly well last year also? Sure, there is an element of luck - a large one, too, - but skill also plays a part. That said, all I'm trying to do here is quantify the extent that luck played in our league and how it affected each one of us individually. Certainly it is evident that JJ was considerably unluckier than everyone else (except maybe for me), and BD was considerably luckier.

Don't misundersatnd me here. I'm certainly not blaming it all on the schedule.
I, too, said there is a great deal of skill involved.
But look at poor JJ:
He scores 83 points in week 9, beats 9 of the 11 other players, but runs into the high scorer for the week, Turi and his 111, and loses.
Then he scores 72 points in week 11, beats 8 out of the 11 other players, but runs into the second high score for the week, JG and his 86, and loses again.
Then last week he scores 92, good enough to beat everyone in the league except the guy he played, SP, who scores 106.
Three weeks, 0-3 after scoring 247 points, but running into three guys who scored 303.
That's the luck factor. Guys were averaging 101 points a week against him.

Anyway, maybe Buffy is right. I should play in a points-only league.
All the skill factors are present....drafting, trading, free agents, waivers, who to bench and who to play, and without the huge element of luck involved in who your opponent happens to be every week and what they score, which is the only thing that you have absolutely no control over.

"next season"? Rookie. Newbie You know it is completely up to the Commish to establish the league settings and point systems. Are you applying for the job? One of my three leagues is points-only. Wanna play with us? You DO know that one can STILL lose in that league too. Then what will be your excuse? :p Guess it is never too early to think about next football season (especially if you are a NINER FAN!!!!! ) As you know, I am not a hoops fan so February can be a very lonely month for me. Luckily it is the shortest month. And - as a disclaimer - in the spirit of the above-referenced name calling I was not being mean . Not even sarcastic. Just bustin' balls a bit.

What "Rookie"? What "Newbie"? I played last year. And we can't have a head-to-head league and a points only league next year? And I don't need any excuses to lose. I lose just fine without 'em.

Why on earth would you want to play in two leagues in the SAME place with the SAME people? You'll understand how complicated it can be when you're playing in multiple leagues with multiple league settings with multiple rules with multiple people for different multiples of money. Hmmm, that's alot of multiples. Of course you don't see ME complaining about the multiples! :p

Jeeze.... You do an awful lot of worrying about what other people here do in fantasy football..... DB, JG, SP, Turi, and I have no problem playing the ESPN Salary Cap Game, using different players and a different scoring system. Maybe we won't play in both a Yahoo head-to-head and points only league. Maybe we will. You said that you play in several Yahoo leagues, one of them points-only, but with all different people. What difference does it make if the people are the same or not? Of course, I appreciate your concern...... :p

Nope. Just you. Ha! If that isn't the pot calling the kettle black. I'm not the one with spreadsheets on all the other players :p <--------------------See???? PS: Is fathersson on a sabbatical? Don't think for a moment I am trying to take his place in the ball-busting category. Sometimes it is just too much fun because you are too easy. I think some of the players will agree with me they have never seen anyone play the game like you!! :p <------------------------See? ?????

My interest in the other players is purely academic. They could be named Moe, Larry, and Curley just as easily as Geoff, Turi, and Buffy.
Nothing personal. Strictly business.
And I take your last remark as a compliment.
I like to win. When I do, I like to analyze and figure out why, so I know what I'm doing right. When I don't, I like to analyze, so I know what I'm doing wrong.
God forbid you should take FS' place  . It was I who started the ball-busting with him.
Poor guy....Wanted so badly to win, but just didn't have what it takes.
And when he couldn't win, he became a bit frustrated, I think. So breaking his balls became too much fun because he was too easy.

The worst DB can do is go 9-5.
You can potentially go 10-4, and FC and BD can also potentially go 9-5.
So the worst DB can do is finish in a 3 way tie with FC and DB, in which case you all make the playoffs.
So he's in.
That leaves three spots.
Potentially, you, BD, FC, SP, TU, and IM all can go 8-6.
Except that BD (7-5) plays TU (6-6) next week, so for TU to be alive with a chance at 8-6, he must win.
That's the only game left that involves any of the six of you.
So going into the last week, there could be as many as 6 people with a record of 8-5 or 7-6, and we could wind up with as many as six people finishing at 8-6, or, if BD beats TU, as many as five.
That's not even considering the scenarios in which teams that are now 5-7 can get in. I know there's a scenario where I can finish 7-7 along with FC and TU, in which you, DB, and BD clinch the first 3 spots, and the three of us battle for the fourth spot.
Anyway, it will most likely come down to a few people tied at 8-6, and we'll need the tiebreaker, points scored. And with two games left for everyone, it's impossible to know how that's gonna go.
