There's been many posts on Brando's refusal in the search engine. In short, Brando used it to bring attention to protest the treatment of Native Americans in general and in movies.
That's how it is in Hollywood. The producer usually goes up and gets the best picture award, usually along w/ director and others. But the producer is the main one.
