I believe that every single deleted scene should have been left in the movie. I dont know if anyone here has seen the Godfather saga, which puts the whole story in chronilogical order and keeps all the deleted scenes in it. But you will see that the deleted scenes hold special significance and explain things better and give different insight into some characters, for example, the owner of the funeral home who makes the infamous request at Connies wedding, when he is called upon to return his Don's favor after sonny is shot, there is a scene where Tom actually calls him in the middle of the night to go meet them, at which time he bad mouths the Don to his wife for a while. This makes me think of him entirely different.

Welcome aboard!!
I get the same feeling when it comes to the deleted scenes. Except I don't want to see the movies in chronilogical order.

Concerning the movie's theatrical release, studio's give directors and his staff a running time and he has to follow it, even if it means it'll be a lesser quality version of the film.
Martin Scorsese was recently forced to cut 45 minutes out of his Gangs of New York, even after he strongly argued that there was practically no footage he could cut without reducing the quality of his film.

In retrospect, it's easy to say that the deleted scenes should have been included. But you have to remember that FFC had a lot of problems with this movie, and Paramount didn't want the flick to be that long. FFC had cut the film down to 2:55, but the studio wanted him to trim it down to 2:20. FFC's contract called for a cut shorter than 2:30, and if he went over that then Paramount was going to cut it for him. Eventually they relented, and they put it back at 2:55. But there's no way that they would have allowed another 45 minutes on top of that. Remember, they had no idea the movie would be this popular.
If you take a movie like Harry Potter, the movie studios were certain that it was going to be a hit, regardless of how long it was. So they didn't really cut anything out of the book, and they made one long-ass movie. But there were no such assurances when it came to The Godfather.

I understand what you're saying Don Corpuzzi, but my question is, why don't these studios learn from their past mistakes? Why cute Gangs of New York by 45 minutes? I think Martin Scorsese has proven himself with such films as Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and Casino. So why mess with success? The man knows what he's doing, so why not let him work & have the movie be 45 minutes longer. People maynot like the fact that a movie is long, but they'll see it anyways! (Godfather, Scarface, Saving Private Ryan, JFK, Schindler's List, Beautiful Mind, etc)

Just think of how many more deleted scenes there are that didn't even make it into the Saga??? Bottom line is, had these never been added to a Novel for Television, we really wouldn't know or care what we were missing. Yet, I can't think of any scenes from the original films that could have been omitted. We all know - or should know - that due to time restraints in final editing the film, FFC had to cut what are now known as the 'deleted scenes'. If they hadn't hit the cutting room floor, then some of the scenes that remained in the film would have. Coppola had to make the tough choices. If anyone on this board had been involved in that final editing process, please let me know if there are any of the deleted scenes that you would trade off for ones that made the film. Thanks, Apple

What occurs in the 'current day' segments of GFII went far beyond the end of the novel. Though Kay stayed with Michael upon his becoming Don Corleone, FFC (and Puzo) had to have considered how her feelings/emotions/frustrations would evolve as the years went on. Considering the Kay we knew in those earlier years, despite her love for him it makes complete sense that there was no way she would stay with Michael through the end of her days. After all, he did promise a 'completely legitimate' family and the day came when she knew he couldn't fulfill that promise. Anyway...part of the effectiveness of the end of GFII is that Michael is truly alone. Apple

Hi, all. This is my first post to this board, but I'm a longtime Godfather aficianado.
The weekend that the original GF chronology was shown on TV I was on my honeymoon on Paradise Island (of all places). There wasn't a TV to be found on the island, as the focus of GOING to PI is to gamble, that I never saw it. And I STILL haven't seen the whole thing.
But I've seen bits and pieces of some of the edited stuff. It shows up from time to time on TV (though NOT in the VHS trilogy my son bought me for Christmas two weeks ago).
I wish they hadn't edited the stuff out. I just saw the GF on Bravo! recently, and a lot of the edited footage made it -- including the scene where the four of them (including Tom) and the Don visit Genco in the hospital right before he dies, and Michael -- with his military hat on -- stares his father in the face and walks away. Great scene -- and it is the first indication that Michael has that cold, steely will that made him a far less benevolent Don than his father was.
There's also a cut scene, before the modern Michael scenes in Godfather II get going (as opposed to the young Vito scenes) where someone goes into a pizza parlor in Buffalo and kills Fabrizio -- the bodyguard who betrayed Michael in Sicily. Does anyone remember that?
