Beth, Although I've heard good things about the film, I'm not sure I can bring myself to see it. My brother just moved downtown, and I drive past Ground Zero every time I visit him. I think that it's still too fresh of a wound. But I'm glad that you recommend it. Maybe I could watch it on DVD when it comes out, so I can bawl my eyes out in private.

When you watch it on DVD do it someplace with stereo surround sound, and also a large screen. There's certain moments in the movie where the effects make you feel like you're right there. Some things I feel would get lost or not be as emotional on a small screen.

I'm sure that with a film like that, there are things that would get lost on a small screen. I just think that it's too raw for me still. For example, my mother invited some of her friends over tonight for coffee and cards. One of these women lost her grandson in the towers, and she's already all worked up over the upcoming anniversary. She and my mother went to the movies a few weeks ago, and they showed the coming attractions for World Trade Center. My mother said it was just devastating, and the entire night was ruined.

I know that for someone that was that personally involved, 50 years probably wouldn't be enough time, much less five. Still and all, as I said, when you see it all the time, when you experience how it touches people's lives, it's just something I don't think I could see right now, at least not in a public place.

Amazing, SB!

What a way to gain ground, right? Wow!

We're starting up a series with the Reds, so I'm hoping the same can be said for us. It seems we've been consistently taking one step forward and two steps back, but I'm praying for a turnaround.

Chad Qualls...what can I say?

I swear to God...he and Brad Lidge are making a lot of serious enemies.

I hate complaining about my boys like this, but these guys have consistently screwed up - it's just sickening to see them blow games, over and over, and they're still given chances to do it all again.

SB, can I ask you - about how soon does Torre take out a pitcher, mainly a reliever, after he's started to screw up? I know you can't just switch out pitchers everytime they give up a hit or something, but it seems Garner will leave them in to do all the damage possible. Qualls came in with a 3-0 lead and gave up a 3-run homer....Garner does nothing...then he gives up another run, which ended up being the winner. The announcers were talking about righty/lefty stats and such, but I would throw all of that out the window and STILL take some of our other guys on the mound compared to this guy....especially after he's obviously screwing up. I don't know. I'm no expert, obviously, but I've never seen a manager so reluctant to take out a struggling pitcher as I have with Gar.

Gina, that's too bad. I don't understand why some managers keep pitchers in too long, especially relievers. Torre will give a reliever the chance to pitch his way out of trouble, but not to the point that he hurts the team.

Before I praise/gripe about the Mets, let me brag about my Willy. (pun intended)

He achieved a new club record with his 30-game hit streak, and since that's ended, he's gone on to make absolutely sparkling defensive plays in center - diving catches, incredible range, and an outfield assist.

Not sure if Geoff still peeks in this thread, but I have to give him thanks for reminding me to stay positive a while back, expressing great faith in my Willy. (Have at it...)

After going on a six-game win streak, my boys are back in the Wild Card race! Yes, along with nearly everyone else in the NL, but I'm excited.

But, the Mets are in town. We lost a tough game today, but I'm having a hard time disliking this team. Let me just say, because they're the hottest team in baseball. As in, they've got players of all-star caliber. Also, as in...

They are the hottest team in baseball.

I even have a thing for Willie Randolph...how am I ever going to consider these guys the enemies?

Sorry, Gina, as a die-hard Yankee fan, I have to disagree with you, especially since they traded Mike Piazza!!

But with the sour taste of last night's game and the trouble they've given us tonight, my feelings have changed a bit.

What's tough about this series is we only get to start one of our three aces - Oswalt - and we had to go with Wandy and Hirsh for the first two starts.

Well, I have to say that I never thought these words would cross my lips, but I almost feel sorry for Boston!! They lost Varitek, their captain and catcher, a while ago with an injury. Then Manny Ramirez went out a week or two ago, and now Big Papi, David Ortiz, was rushed to the hospital for the second time with heart problems.

I doubt that many Red Sox fans were crying when we lost Matsui, Sheffield and Cano, and now Mussina, but still...I hope that Big Papi's ok, because he is one great player.

Wow. Beltran (former Astro who went to the Mets for bigger bucks) just saved a couple of runs with a dazzling play in center on Berkman's deep fly ball - absolutely robbed us.

But, he ended up with an injury, and I'm wondering if it was worth it for the Mets. I think they need his health more than this one win. He was on the ground for a while as the trainers checked him out, and he was then slowly escorted all the way to the dugout. He was walking on his own, but his leg appeared stiff. They announced that he'd hurt his knee, and my mom thought she saw the trainer say "hamstring."

Our fans are still booing him since he left us for $120 million, but thank God, they applauded him as he walked off the field. Truly, he's too good to boo at any time, because we come off looking pretty stupid when he beats us with his amazing skill, but especially during something as scary and bad as what happened tonight, we needed to show some class...I'm glad we did.

I wish Carlos all the best.

I missed your post as I was posting, SB, but here we are both feeling bad for players we normally treat as absolute enemies!

Really though, I believe that serious injuries or problems such as these go beyond rivalries, and I applaud you for that post.

I feel terrible for Boston after hearing about all of their troubles, and now I've read that Jon Lester has lymphoma!

Gina, I looked up Lester's form of Lymphoma. So frightening in someone so young. The chemo will probably be fairly devastating, as cancer is unusually aggressive in younger people. Very, very sad. The rest of the team seems really thrown by the news.

WTF???? The Yankees are losing to BALTIMORE 8-2 in the freakin 4th inning!! Beth, can I count on you to head over there and sabotage the Orioles?? Run over to the stadium and flash them or something, so that they get distracted. That's not too much to ask, is it??

I finally got to see the Browns play a football game on tv today. They lost against the Saints but, it was still nice seeing the home team play.

Well, DUH!!! Did I tell you that my daughter's best friend got to meet Derek Jeter? She went to a Yankee game two weeks ago and a friend of her dad's who works at the stadium brought her over to where the players arrive. He gave her a pen and a ball and told her she could hang out and see if she could get an autograph. Sure enough, Derek Jeter got out of a black car, and she asked him for his autograph. He told her he would do it on one condition - that she hold his coffee while he signed the ball for her. Sigh and swoon! She called my daughter up the next day, and all she kept saying over and over, is "I held Derek Jeter's coffee!!!".

Lucky kid! I'm so jealous!!!!!!!

Who would've thought that a guy would revive The Ladies' Thread after a 1-week-sleep. Wake up ladies!

Beth E, just now I got around to see those pictures you posted 2 pages back, and all I can say is that they TOTALLY rock! You look absolutely fantastic!Great pictures of you, the kids, and (half) your mom. Take more pics next time!

Gina, havent seen you in the other sections, hows it goin? when was the last time you watched The Blues Brothers? this morning or an hour ago?
I've seen the sequel and it just didnt feel right. not at all. (tho the songs were not as horrible as the rest of the film) Lets just say that I wont be seeing it again. Im still watching the original on a yearly-basis tho. (I listen to the soundtrack much more)

Zia...your avatar is my fav on this board! are you also a Snoopy nut? ppl laugh at me for being a Snoopy fan but I know that even when Im 80 yrs old, I'd still be watching "Snoopy, come home" and "Race for your life, Charlie Brown" on Saturday mornings. You just cant kill nostalgia....plus, I just LOVE Woodstock!

Mig- how's the family doing? I was very sorry to read about your husband's gran, and I hope that Ernesto didnt leave much damage where Becky lives. Heres hoping the best for your family, and that you will only know good times from now on

Sicilian Babe- guess what, I've finally started reading Da Vinci Code - its good read...as long as you dont take it for real..(I mean, I know about all the criticism about thats "not right" and thats "not true" in reality...but yeah, its fiction, so c'mon -- thanx SB for recommending it!

Mmmm...now a sport related question to all of you: anyone interested....watching...or better yet, practicing Thai Box, Kickbox or any other martial arts?

...and I know that Im a dead man if Im about to post a reply in this thread without mentioning a certain name...so here goes:

DEREK JETER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fame you are so sweet Thanks for asking about my family. We are doing good. Thank God there was no damage to house in VA. Becky is fine. She's tough. Just got a golden retriever puppy 2 weeks ago.

How are you doing? I was gonna revive this thread Sunday and brag about the Browns winning the battle of Ohio but since they didn't, I didn't. I got so tired of the way they were playing I started watching Becky's team the Giants. Does that make me a trader? Thanks again for your concern.

Thanks... Schroeder's my favorite, but I haven't watched any of them on Saturday mornings in years, unfortunately. It's not Christmas without Charlie Brown though.

Fame, I just have to say - I love your posts. Each one is so interesting and such a joy to read, and you're so nice to talk with.

Things are going well...I'm just keeping busy with school, which means less time on the BB. Unless I decide to sacrifice homework, that is.

The Blues Brothers never gets old. I'm convinced that I could watch it, The Godfather, and My Blue Heaven any number of times and never get tired of them... The music is the main reason I can deal with the sequel, but otherwise, it's not so great...and especially not comparable to the original.

Derek Jeter?? You mean this year's MVP??? He won't promote himself, but I will!!

Fame,
Glad that you're reading DaVinci Code. It was an fast-paced adventure story. And, sure, it's mostly fiction, but maybe it's MEN saying that because they don't want the truth to get out. I also enjoyed Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. I've been to Rome several times, so it was sort of neat to read about places I've been.

I'm also glad that you revived the thread. I miss talking to you guys.

Oh, and btw, De-rek Je-ter - MVP!!

So glad to hear you're all fine. A puppy! You sure in for a lot of fun. Got a couple myself. Not puppies anymore tho. I've had Hawk for a while, but I was out at work all day and it was kinda boring for him to wait around all day...I hated to leave him alone so I got him a lady....Tigra. Now I know that while Im at work they keep each other company. Actaully they love each other so much that when I come home they say their hellos and go back to each other. Not that Im jealous, of course. Ahem. Me? Jealous? no way!

Just got back from my daily run, so I feel a lil extra good. Added another mile today, so now I run 8 miles. I still feel like I can run some more at the end, but I really need to stop there, 8 miles is enough for a daily basis, I think I'll stick to that.
Hows it going with tennis, Zia?...been a LONG time since we talked, shame on us!

Alas, no Paris for me. Since I have relatives in Italy, I sort of feel guilty traveling anywhere else in Europe because then I won't get to see them. My lucky husband has been to both London and Cologne on business several times, but I have not been invited to join in.

By the way, I'm watching the Yankees on TV right now, and guess who is on first base! Hmmm....could it be Derek Jeter? They're tied 3-3 with Toronto, which is another of my favorite cities. Big, beautiful, clean, lovely sights, wonderful restaurants, GREAT place to see a baseball game, too.

Fame, thanks for the well wishes in school! Yes, this is my senior year, then it's on to college!

Hmm, favorite Blues Brothers song...do you know how difficult this is?!

My favorite song, just for the song itself, changes often - I like them all. What I really love are the scenes that go with the songs...that makes the music, you know? Considering that, I like "Shake A Tailfeather," because I adore Ray Charles, and the crowd dancing outside never fails to entertain me. Also, I really enjoy "Everybody Needs Somebody," at the concert finale - when the audience really gets into it...I need you, you, you! The whole movie is filled with fantastic music, though...too hard to narrow it down!
