Gina, I love Shake Your Tailfeather. What a great scene!! But it would be a tough decision for me between that and Think. Aretha was so great in that number!!

Btw, did anybody notice my Yankees clinched the division title last night?? I'm not sure what happened, but Derek Jeter didn't show up for the champagne that I had on ice. Maybe his car broke down. Yup, that must be it.

Congrats to your Yanks SB. Someone here should have some bragging rights. Maybe I'll just get on the BlueClaws bandwagon so I can be a fan of some championship team.

Bethie's right - at least someone here has a team making dates for October. But hey, my boys are still statistically, mathematically, technically, not out of the race, so I'm not giving up yet...

I can't tell if you're just testing me on how much I've been paying attention in Stats...

...or making a jab at my team!

Surely not the latter. Especially coming from a Cubs fan. :p Or is it Cardinals? I forget.

Boy, I just couldn't imagine that!

Willy's making an appearance at a local car dealership to meet fans, but I'll be in school when he's there...that's worth skipping for, isn't it?

Thanks for the photo, Gina! That one was in my local paper, and I was considering having it framed.

Congrats go out to my daughter who today was offered a job she interviewed for on Wednesday. She's been working since she was 16, but as a waitress at different places. She graduated college in August with a degree in Accounting. She was offered a job at a firm called RWD Technologies. Her title is "Project Accounting Adminstrator". She'll be doing bookkeeping. She's just glad now that she'll have a dependable paycheck that she can get a decent car. I'm glad that she'll be making money I can sit back and she can support me..haha. She says this company has branches all over, including places like London and Australia. I told her to see if they have an office in New York. She can take her mama if she moves..hahaha. Here is their website.

Gina..woo hoo! The Astros are only 1/2 game out of 1st. Keep the faith girl...keep the faith.

I don't know why everytime I say The Astros I think of The Jetsons.

Gina, All your beautiful photos are gone!! NO!!

I'm sorry about Houston last night! And damn St. Louis for winning. Well, do they still have 3 games to play? Tell us, StatWoman, is it still mathematically possible for them to win?

My Yankees clinched homefield advantage for the playoffs. That's always good. I remember reading once that no team had a homefield advantage like the Yankees, mostly due to their rather vociferous fans! Leave it to us NYers!!

Okay...after writing a detailed post regarding the possibilities between my Astros and the Cards in the fight for the division, I went on MLB.com to see this headline:

"Cards' magic number down to one"

I thought, "That's impossible," knowing good and well our elimination number was two after last night. I couldn't imagine MLB being wrong, but I had to figure this out. I clicked on the article, and read a description of a Cardinals' win that sounded nothing similar to what happened last night. I finally realized (with great horror) that they'd already played and won an afternoon game today. I had no idea about it - I hadn't checked MLB's site since yesterday (not really wanting to, anyway), but I could've sworn they were supposed to play this evening. Arghhhhhh...

I'll post what I'd originally written, since it's still relevant, but basically, any Cardinal win or Astro loss puts us out of it, now.

I just wish I'd been more prepared for this blow to our chances...but I still BELIEVE.

I know!!! It's all Geoff's fault!

Beth, thanks for the support of my boys - I still can't believe the run they've made. Of course, it took a huge choke on St. Louis' part to put us this close, but I'm so proud of the Astros for not giving up. We were once 8 1/2 out of first, but the Cards going 1-8 and us going 9-0 made us a mere 1/2 game out!

Last night was tough, though.

Quote:

We only have today and tomorrow left in the regular season. The Cards have the same, as well as a make-up game with the Giants on Monday - which they will play only if necessary to determine the playoff spot.

Though our chances were hurt quite a bit by last night's loss and the Cardinals' win, StatWoman says it's still mathematically possible! I could give you my explanation, but I'm afraid I'd be the only one able to understand it ( ), so I'll quote the Houston Chronicle instead:

Code:

If the Cardinals go...

2-0 -> Astros are eliminated.

1-1 -> Astros must go 2-0 to force St. Louis to play a makeup game against Giants.
A loss to the Giants forces a playoff. Victory over Giants gives Cardinals title.

0-2 -> Astros win division with two wins over Braves and Cards loss to Giants.
As it's been all along, it's still in the Cardinals' hands. All we can do, and what we have to do, is win our last two. The rest will depend on what St. Louis does. That make-up game is what's kept our games-behind number in 1/2 increments. Our best situation is to force them to play that, either with them going 1-1 or 0-2. The worst thing will be if, no matter what we do, they win both.

SB, congrats to your boys on winning HFA! That definitely is worth something in NY!

Pray for my boys tonight, gals!

Give Gina a week and she'll be posting those stats just like plaw. (Don't worry Gina, unlike his posts we'll read yours).

Well, I will definitely keep my fingers crossed for Houston. I would like to see them in the postseason, although I admit that I'm hoping for a Subway Series this year. It's so unusual for both NY teams to have such great years that I'd enjoy seeing them play one another in October, although I understand that it's an advertising/ratings nightmare. During the Subway Series in 2000, viewership was dismal outside of the tri-state area.

Well, it is my job.

But you don't have to read mine, either...it's just a way to vent.

SB, I would be interested in seeing a Subway Series this year, as well. I really enjoy the playoffs no matter who's in it, simply because it's baseball. I'm looking forward to this October regardless of whether my boys make it, but of course you know I'm rooting for them to beat the odds this weekend.

If the Cards do make it, I'm going to find it VERY difficult to root for them. Sure, it's mostly sour grapes - especially against Pujols...but I just can't stand him. He's broken my heart too many times. But also, a more rational reason, I can't say that they really deserve to go far when you consider the complete collapse they've had here recently. Ah...even that sounds like I'm jealous.

And the game begins...

I know exactly what you mean about Pujols. Kind of like me and Rocket. :p J/K (well, just a little). I will keep my fingers crossed for you and your boys, though. Like you, I don't think that the Cards deserve to be in the playoffs. They had it all sewn up and, if they lose it, they have nobody to blame but themselves.

Right now, the Cardinals' magic number (our elimination number) is down to one, which means that any Cardinals win or Astros loss puts us out of it.

So yes, if we lose today, we're out...but even if we win, they can put us out of it with a win of their own.

The situation that all Astros fans want, is a win for us and a loss for the Cards...

...which will put us 1/2 game behind them in the division, forcing them to play that makeup game in San Francisco. If they win that (putting them 1 game ahead of us), they get the division - if they lose it (tying them with us), we play them in a 1-game playoff.

So basically, we've got to have all the stars aligned for this to work. (But it's still possible!!!)

Last night's game felt like we were dead men walking, but they stuck it out and got the win. If anything, I'm proud of them for that, and I hope we can get the win today, too. We can't control the rest, so I'm leaving it up to the baseball gods. Go Brewers!

And #3, Jeter just struck out and it doesn't look good for his winning the batting title.

Gina, too bad. I thought that the Cards would completely self-destruct and your boys would deservedly win the division. Sorry to see that they didn't.

JG, I know what you mean about Jeter v. Mauer, especially for him to lose by .001!! But I think that he'll get MVP, and that's even more important.

This whole steroid thing is just getting ridiculous.

Well, it's the top of the 5th and the Yankees are leading the Tigers 5-3. It was 5-0 just a couple of minutes ago, but the night is young. I would like the Yankees to make this quick and then move on.

Too bad about the Mets pitchers! First, Pedro has to have rotator cuff surgery. Then his replacement El Duque is rushed off to the hospital with severe leg cramps. Don't know who they're going to start tomorrow.
