This is for enjoyment and fun and I don't take playing fantasy sports or kidding about it seriously. I play for PURE enjoyment and entertainment. And by the way, you may see me pick my lineup, especially my pitching staff in an unorthadox manner. I sometimes get a kick out of picking my line-up/pitchers by pure instinct. I swear, if there was a different name and avatar up there, I'd think I was talking to FS I expect DC to be calling me "Pee" Lawrence any day now, and instead of hearing about cutting the grass and barbecues and hanging flower baskets, it'll be golf lessons, dance school recitals, and coaching little league teams. :p Originally posted by plawrence: ...we all spend roughly the same amount of time every day maybe, maybe 5-10 minutes or so, doing our "research" and picking our teams.... It's nice to know, though, that there are people who actually take this more seriously than I do, although I suppose you could argue that how much time someone spends on the game is incidental to how they feel about it. But to those who say that these games can be taken too seriously - and I've obviously heard that song before - I would say what I said to Iceman in the hockey thread when he expressed that POV: These games - especially the baseball and football, whose seasons pretty much cover the entire year except for a few weeks in October - have become kind of a hobby for me. And, as I said to Iceman: "You're into guns and hunting and all of that. Don't you take it damned seriously?" I would ask the same question of anyone with a hobby or an interest, whatever that hobby or interest may be. I'm sure, for exmple, that Don Cardi's son takes his golf game real seriously, and while he plays for the enjoyment of playing - which, of course, is why we all play any of these games - if he's playing with someone who picks his ball up in the rough and improves his lie without taking a penalty (like I used to do when I played, because I was playing strictly for the fun of it, and although I was breaking the rules, I didn't care because I was just playing for fun) and then when he says something has that person tell him that he's taking the game too seriously..... We've all played board games, like Monopoly, for example. Does anyone make deliberately "silly" moves or "wrong" moves because they don't care or because they are playing "strictly for the fun of it"? I thinkk not. I believe that everyone does their best, and everyone tries their hardest to win because deep down inside, whether they admit it to themselves or others or not, they want to win. OK....enough amateur psychoanalyzing for one day.....

Interesting Sociology lesson here, and a fine example of group dynamics..... FS aligns himself with DC -- very unusual DC aligns himself with PL -- also very unusual PL compares DC to FS -- very unusual Anyway, nice to know that you're out there lurking, FS. Please do think of me everytime you flip a steak on the grill, pop open another can of suds, hang a flower basket for mom, mow that lawn and enjoy the delicious and incomparable aroma of freshly cut grass, or stroll hand-in-hand with your best girl or sit under the stars on a blanket watching those July 4th fireworks. :p Oh, and BTW.....I've been waiting for a situation like this to arise: It sounds to me like your last post wasn't approved approved by Don Cardi. Now what happens?

Whatta night I don't ever recall a scenario like today's: Everyone picks one of two pitching staffs, and the difference is like 50 points or so. Glad I was on the right side on this one.

With all the talk about whining and crying lately, I hope a certain new player here who shall remain nameless (Don Cardi knows who he is) realizes which of the old-timers is the biggest whiner and crier of all, and that it is certainly not poor, innocent, misunderstood, fantasy sports hobbiest me. :p Let me also add - for the benefit of the luck vs. skill argument - that the Beckett-Santana choice tonight was pretty much a matter of luck the way I see it. There was no secret, skillfull reason, at least AFAIC, which made me take Santana. Just a hunch really, figuring he was due for a win already, and the weak KC opposition. Plus, Beckett's last start was a little weak, coupled with the fact that his oppostion - Cleveland - was stronger. But I can't honestly say that picking Santana involved any great skill.

Hmmmmm......
I took a look at The Leaderboard to see who picked who yesterday, and was very surprised at what it I found.
I only got throughthe first 30 before the 3:00 AM deadline, however....
Minn 22 Bost 4 Yanks 2 StL 1
Keep in mind that these were the leaders already, not people who got there because they picked Santana.
Maybe there was some reason which clearly made Santana the better pick, but if there was I sure don't know what it was, other than what I said above.
Edit: Other Factors:
Santana was cheaper, 4.5 to Beckett's 6.0
Santana was 6-3 lifetime vs. KC in 13 games and 10 starts. He has a lifetime E.R.A. against the Royals of 3.20 over 76 IPs and they have a .188 batting average against him, but was 2-1 in four games (3 starts) at Kauffman Stadium, with an E.R.A. of only 1.85 and a .163 batting average against.
Current Royals have a lifetime batting average of .183 against him, with 3 homers in 120 ABs.
Beckett had never pitched against the Indians or in Jacobs field at all.
Current Indians had a lifetime batting average against him of .350, with 3 homers in only 20 ABs.
Hmmm.....Maybe Santana was the better pick.
