How come no standings posted for the last two days? Is our friend without service again? Or is he killing them down in AC?

Here ya go, ladies and gentlemen....

DC must be prescient, though....

I am gonna take a little trip down to A.C. this afternoon for some more poker. If anyone is down there, you can look for me in the poker room at the Taj.

I missed the d/h but probably wouldn't have picked either team anyway as it looks like rain there. So I doubt they'll get two games in.

The Weather Service has just cancelled all the Flood Advisories. Apparently the anticipated rainfall is not materializing. It looks like the Yankees will play two today.

Okay, it's one thing to hope for 2 games and choose one of the PS's -- but TWO of you picked FLA (5-10 Willis + a Rookie) -- AT NYY??!? Hmm... I hope they do play 2 now...!! :p

(I hope that that is NOT an Anti-Jinx™! )

yeah I also was very surprised to see two picks of the Marlins PS. they'll play at least one for sure, and since Mussina was one of the most solid picks in the first place (even without the D/H) I thought I'd take a shoot with him even though I hate the damn Yanks. in fact, I wish there was no D/H anyway because there were already plenty of good options, with Loaiza and Josh BLowers pitching. I was going to load up on the Mets, take the Giants PS and also a few hitters against Loaiza and I hoped I'd have a good day.

now there's this D/H and I know some of my picks makes no sense, like Wright at 3rd base (both A-Rod and Miggy Cabrera are less expensive and might play 2) and Hermida at RF (since I'm supposedly relying on the fact they might play one) but I'll just wait and see how it turns out.

Which team has the best record in baseball the last 4 weeks?

6/19/06
MIAMI Joe Girardi is as surprised as anyone.

"I knew we would play better," the Florida Marlins' rookie manager said, "but I did not expect this."

He's surely not alone.

No one could have expected this - a four-week run where the untried, rebuilding and rookie-loaded Marlins were the hottest team in baseball.

Led by a bunch of relative unknowns, the Marlins are 18-6 in their last 24 games and have climbed out of last place in the NL East. Josh Johnson leads the majors with a 2.01 ERA. Dan Uggla has 12 home runs. Scott Olsen has won four consecutive starts.

Who, exactly, are these guys?

They're the future, which right now is looking pretty good.

"I just like how, regardless of how we were playing, we were still coming in and working hard and still believing," said left-hander Dontrelle Willis, who finished second in the NL Cy Young Award balloting last season but is off to a 3-6 start in 2006. "Now it's starting to pay off."

Willis and third baseman Miguel Cabrera - among the NL leaders with a .342 average, 83 hits and 23 doubles - came into this year as the veterans of sorts in the Marlins' clubhouse.

Never mind that Willis is still only 24 and Cabrera just 23, they are the sages on a team that split with Carlos Delgado, Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell, Alex Gonzalez, Juan Pierre, Todd Jones and Luis Castillo from last year's team - slicing $45 million in payroll, down to a major league-low $15 million in 2006.

But a bunch of guys getting their first chance at being major-league regulars - like Johnson, Uggla, Mike Jacobs (.273) and Hanley Ramirez (.268, 20 stolen bases) - are making the most of their opportunity.

"When you've got young guys, rookies, they always want to prove themselves," Girardi said. "It's like they need to show themselves that they can really play on this level."

If there was doubt, it's starting to be erased.

"I don't think in this game you can catch anyone off guard," Uggla said. "People in the game know who's a good team and who's not. We can see who can play and who cannot. At this level, very few people can't play."

The Marlins were 11-31 on May 21, losers of seven straight. They beat the Chicago Cubs 9-1 the next day, and the roll hasn't stopped since. Postseason tickets probably aren't being printed yet, but there's a clear sense of confidence accompanying Florida's current eight-game winning streak - one shy of the team record.

During this 24-game run, Florida has outscored opponents 117-74, is 8-2 in games decided by two runs or less, and has a team ERA of 2.82.

"It all starts with starting pitching," Girardi said. "When you've got that, you've got a chance."

And in the eight-game winning streak, the Marlins' numbers are even better. Team ERA: 1.85. Batting average: .279. Run differential: 37-16.

Doesn't matter to me. I never pick 1) the Yanks PS, or 2) anyone opposing the Yanks PS. :p

You should have taken my offer which included Josh Johnson and his 2.01 ERA.

I can't get into the ESPN game site or the Yahoo site right now.

Anyone else that's around having a problem?

Seems to be OK now, thanks.

That was my original thought, thought -- that someone was out there hacking away at the fantasy sports sites.

Probably someone's disgruntled wife or girlfriend.

Rain delay already in the 2nd game. The weathermen can't be trusted. The rain was supposed to end this morning. I guess being out for a total of 8 hours in the past 5 days was too much for the sun to take. The game better not be washed out cause I'm racking up some more points for my offense.

Welcome Don Allesandrio (KN)

If I may offer a few words of advice (I see that you've played a few ESPN games in the past)....

The pretty much accepted "right" way to play this game - or at least the way all of those on the Leaderboard play it day after day, year after year - is to change your team every day and make sure that you have a full team of guys who are playing on that particular day.

Occasionally, you may have an outstanding player who you acquired at a low price at the beginning of the season and you think that it pays to hold on to him and suffer the "zero" on his off days in order to keep him locked in at that low price, and that may sometimes be the case and it might pay to do so.

But the consensus - again among those who are on the Leaderboard (and there are a few who are there year after year) - is that if there are occasions like that, they are very rare.

Also, since pitching generally accounts for, or potentially accounts for, anywhere from 25 to 50% of your sore every day, most people pick their pitching staff first, and then pick an offense based around that with whatever cap room they have left.

Anyway.....Welcome, and enjoy the game.

Practically everyone is riding the Griffey train tonight except for TM, who prefers Sizemore.

well and I didn't even know that. I've took benefits from Griffey the whole season, it just happened that I had a lot of cap room left yesterday so I came up with Sizemore, one of my favorite players. I believe it's the first time I pick him.

edit: 1 second after writting this, TM checks the CLE-CIN game at mlb.com's gameday just in time to see Sizemore striking out with 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd, finishing the top of the first inning, when the Indians scored 5 runs but leadoff batter Sizemore went 0-2

Since when is Russ Ortiz an Oriole? It would be nice if I kept up with my home team once in awhile. Way to go Angelos. Buy another old man ready for the retirement home.
