Congrats DB...good show. I hope you're planning to play the second half, though. I know....wedding, honeymoon, etc. etc., but you really gotta lay down the law early on in a marriage. I mentioned this before, but perhaps it bears repeating as the big day draws closer: Let her know that you're the boss, the "King of the Castle", and that fantasy sports are important and you don't intend to give them up simply because you're now married. Of course, my POV is a purely selfish one, as I don't want any possibility of my anticipated second half and overall points wins to be tainted by your absence. Anyway, I'm not whining or complaining. Considering that I missed two days, I figure I would've finished second, but that doesn't mitigate from the fact that DB still would've beaten me. So, once again, "Congrats" -- you did a helluva job. And special honorable mention congratulations to TM who managed to play the entire first half without missing a day, and showed us that he's a knowledgable force to be reckoned with in the future. I don't think I ever posted any for this game. I looked thru the first nine pages or so of the thraed and couldn't find any. Anyway, if I had, I know one thing for sure: I would've picked myself to finish ahead of you. And, JG, I'll throw my usual challenge out there to you: We play for money, you decide how much per point, I'll give you 2-1 odds on whatevever stakes you decide. Same offer to you, JL and DB, but no odds.

It was on p. 10. Originally posted by plawrence: One of the things I had intended to do before the seaon started was post my predictions along with the "odds" of everyone winning and a few of sentences of "comment and analysis", a la one of those pre-season baseball magazines.
For some reason I never got around to it, and then it slipped my mind, but had I done it before the game started, it would have looked something like this:
1 PL 3-1 Out to prove last year was a fluke
2 JL 7-2 This is one of the sports in "MOAAFS"
3 JG 4-1 Finally a legit contender to win title
4 DB 9-2 Could be out of practice
5 GG 10-1 Seems very dedicated, but is that enough?
6 CC 15-1 If she can stay away from the Johnsons.....
7 TM 20-1 MUST avoid those deadly missed days
8 DC 99-1 Only because he told me in advance he'd be
missing a lot of days because of vacations
9 LZ 99-1 Same as above Interestingly, if we leave DC and LZ out of the discussion for the moment (since neither expects to be able to play the full season), the two players I picked for last and next-to-last, TM & CC, are currently first and second, respectively.

And here's your update on p. 14. Originally posted by plawrence: I got in touch with my contacts in Vegas and got an update on the odds of winning this thing.
Here are the latest odds, along with the opening line:
Opening Latest
-
PL 1334 3-1 3-1 Holding steady as top pick
DB 1340 9-2 7-2 Now the second choice
GG 1300 10-1 4-1 Has proven her skill
JL 1259 7-2 9-2 132 point deficit hard to make up
JG 1231 4-1 5-1 160 point deficit harder to make up
CC 1322 15-1 6-1 Fading after strong start
TM 1391 20-1 7-1 Still must prove he won't miss days
DC 1283 99-1 50-1 Caught on, but will he stay the course?
SC 1070 ---- 150-1 Late start makes win almost impossible
LZ 974 99-1 300-1 May not stay, and not playing anyway TM is probably a great bet at 7-1, if you believe he won't miss any days....he already has enough of a cushion to miss at least one day, anyway.....
JL and JG might be worth a wager if you think they can come back.....
PL and DB probably not worth the short odds when you consider how close the people behind them are.....
And, finally, you can't go wrong putting a coupla bucks on SC at 150-1.....you never know, he might hit a massive hot streak.....
Want better odds than 4-1 on GG and 6-1 0n CC foreither to be worth a bet.....

well thanks for the kind words all of you. you are creating a monster here!! now that the half is over, someone (I don't have the guts to do that) could put together a chart with all the stats (pitching and offense) and, especially, comments. and let me disagree with you plaw. you said if you hadn't missed 2 days, you'd be in 2nd place, right? it makes sense if you think that you ended with only 27 pts less than me and 62 less than JL. if you had played 2 more days, and averaged a humble 31 pts these 2 days, you'd be in 2nd, right? but at least in my case, the way I played was influenced by not having a close threat behind me, so it's imposible to tell what would'be happened. and now let me whine: if I had not been robbed 9 pts from a Reggie Sanders grand slam months ago, I'd be 1 point ahead of JL on the last day and I definitely wouldn't have picked the Nationals PS for yesterday. what you could imagine, plaw, is that if I hadn't had such great performances from PS in the days I forgot to pick'em (Miner 9 IP 1 ER and Glavine 26 pts in the same day Johan Santana was pitching), I would definitely be in 4th, especially if you think that I wanted to pick Brad Penny the day I wound up with Miner (and the Dodgers went for minus pts that day :p )

10 Things I Think I Think (ala Peter King)1 - Thanks for the congrats JG, Gina and Plaw. You guys are the best. 2 - It is awfully difficult to play De-fense (clap clap) when two guys are trailing you, especially when they were going back and forth like TM and JL were doing. There were too many permutations to use the strategy effectively. 3 - As I mentioned previously, I will not be playing in the second half. My reasons are many and are not limited to: - A slight matter of my wedding/honeymoon - I want to start liking sports again. 4 - I wish you all good luck in the 2nd half. I leave you all parting gifts. 5 - JL - May you get many of these on your next trip to AC. 6 - TM - To make sure you keep up your non-DNP streak. 7 - PL - To help you with your fuzzy math! 8 - JG - "Hey Geoff, why do you laugh when I say woodwind?"

Oh hey, did you win the first half, DB? I haven't even been looking at the standings... tsk tsk. Well, congrats!!!!!!! I'm sure winning this is the highlight of your summer, am I right? Wedding, schmwedding... this is the stuff heroes are made of! :p And thanks for the pic! I can almost smell that "new tennis ball" scent. Although I think all the guys are going, "There were tennis balls in that picture?" :p By the way, I still think of you every time I see a Powershot commercial. And that's several times a day this past month, since I've been watching more TV than usual with the World Cup and all the tennis tournaments. Don't you feel special?

Wow, that picture from Field of dreams with the caption, "SC..wanna have a catch" brought a tear to my eye. And I'm not even chomping onions. I know, there's no crying in baseball. DB's not playing 2nd half? That's it. Neither am I. I say we all boycott and leave plaw alone to play with his digits. DB..will we ever see you again? :p

Don Sicilia, Thanks for the Jessica Alba pic. Now I have three players for my team : Don Cardi batting behind Anna Benson with Jessica Alba behind Don Cardi. To heck with the other 6 players! Who need them!?! Enjoy your wedding day my friend and here's wishing both you, and your lovely bride the best! Don Cardi

Sheesh...... I really missed the boat with some of the those first half predictions, didn't I? Undaunted, however, here we go for the second half: 1- PL, 3-1: Probably woulda finished second if not for the missed days. 2- JL, 7-2: Has definitely proven to be upper echelon material 3- JG, 4-1: What can I say that hasn't been said already? 4- TM, 5-1: Must prove first half was no fluke. 5- CC, 20-1: Best of the rest. 6- SC, 25-1:[b/] One of these days I think he's gonna surprise us. But until that day, and that day may never come.....
[b]6- DC, 30-1: Is he even gonna play? 7- GG, 50-1: VERY disappointing first half performance. 8- LZ, 100-1: I have no clue. Looks like anyone's game - between JL, TM, JL, PL, and maybe even JG, for the all-important Overall Championship.

I'm pretty sure of this, but I figured I should double-check here... If someone doesn't set their roster tonight (or anytime in the future), they won't get any points for the second half, right? I only ask because there are only about ten players in my school group that are still setting their lineups on a regular basis, yet everyone is obviously still earning points. 4 people have left the default Opening Day lineup that I had for everyone, and they're in the middle-high range of the standings. Since everything looks like it did at the start of the season, I'd assume that you have to set at least one lineup to earn points for the second half - if so, it'd be great, because our league could finally separate the men from the boys, so to speak.

I believe that is correct. If I understand your question correctly, you're asking if their lineup for tomorrow will revert back to the last lineup that they used, and I believe that the answer is "no". To play the second half, I think you have to pick at least one new lineup.

Okay, thanks. But after seeing the odds, I'm not sure if I should even bother setting my own lineup. I never meant to disappoint you. (A knife to my heart...) I'd like to blame it on school/chores/other responsibilities, but I'm afraid it was just plain ol' laziness. This half, however, I can blame on school, because I already know it's going to get in the way.
