In addition to The Shining with Jack Nicholson, I thought the Stephen King television series version was as good, if not better.
Scariest movie? Problem is that you see the movies a couple of times, they're nowhere near as scary, and it's hard to remember your initial reaction.
For me, I saw the Exorcist at a drive-in around 1980 when I was 16, and that chilled my blood. I still enjoy the movie.
Jason Miller, who played Father Karras, was from my hometown, was a friend of the family. That made it more interesting too.

I have to agree about Event Horizon... That movie had some of the creepiest set designs I've ever seen in a Sci-Fi horror film. You couldn't predict anything about who was going to die or live! I have to add The Thing as one of my favorite horror movies. That movie had some of the best morphing special effects I've ever seen. ![](/threads/images/graemlins/classic/laugh.gif)

I'd say Deep red (aka Profondo Rosso) by Dario Argento. Couldn't sleep for many nights after watching that movie..... The shining is a wonderful close second ![](/threads/images/graemlins/classic/laugh.gif)
I don't want realism. I want magic! Yes, yes, magic. I try to give that to people. I do misrepresent things. I don't tell the truth. I tell what ought to be truth (Blanche/A streetcar named desire)

The Exorcist (1973) The Shining (1980) Nosferatu (1922), this movie is just unbelievably scary for a 1922 movie Psycho (1960) The Silence of the Lambs (1991) Anthony Hopkins, that cold eyes Seven (1995)
