A couple of highlights from my youth:
1981 MLB All-Star Game. This was the 1st game back for MLB after a bitter strike. My dad, born in Canada, was elated to watch Montreal's Gary Carter hit 2 homeruns.
1979 Browns win over Cowboys on Monday Night Football. Got to see Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett, Too Tall Jones, et al.
1989 Browns maul the Chicago Bears on MNF as Bernie Kosar hits Webster Slaughter on 97 yard TD after the Browns defense stuffed Chicago on a 4th and goal.
June 3rd or 4th 1995: Indians came back from 8-0 deficit vs. David Cone/Toronto Blue Jays. Paul Sorrento hit a 3 run, 2 out HR in the 9th inning in one in long list of comeback wins from a magical Indians season. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CLE/CLE199506040.shtmlThe above link will bring you a box score of your game, as well as a play by play account of the Sunday, June 4, 1995 Indian win. I remember that 1981 game vividly. The National League continued its domination and won 5-4. Carter hit 2homers, but it was Ohioan, Mike Schmidt, who hit the two-run homer off Rollie Fingers to put the NL ahead to stay in the eighth. Thanks for the link Klydon . The NL was on a mammoth All-Star Game win streak that continued until Fred Lynn hit a grandslam in a rout for the AL in 1983. I remember Len Barker of the Indians pitched in the game, which was the same season he pitched a perfect game vs. Toronto on 5/15/81. The funny thing about the June 4, 1995 game was that Jason Grimsley was the Tribe starter. He gave up 7 runs in the 1st inning. These two elderly ladies were behind us and left the game after the 2nd inning (when another run was added) saying "the Indians stink." Mind you, this was the season that they won 100 games in a strike shortened 144 game season! It's okay that they left, their hearts may not have been able to handle the drama that unfolded the rest of the way. The city went nuts after the game, horns were honking, everybody was high-fiving each other. It was a fun time.

No question for me it was Game 1 of the 1955 World series between the Yankees and the Dodgers. I as a little kid. My dad took me. We had seats in the upper deck in right field. I remember seeing Jackie Robinson steal home (something I didn't know was possible). Yankee first baseman Joe Collins hit two home runs that day.
Event No 2. Was probably a match I saw in Center Court in Wimbeldon back in the sixties, one of the layers was a guy named Hewitt from South Arica who was famous for having a bad temper. After two double faults I remember him hitting two balls over the roof into the street. I don't remember anything else about the match, not even who the other player was, but to cop a seat at Center COurt at Wimbeldon was a great thrill.
Event No 3. The first Griffith- Paret fight in Miami. Griffith won and did a full flip in the center of the ring. There were two more Griffith Paret fights, with the last one ending in Paret's death.
Event No 4. Tama Bay Lightning v. Edmonton Oilers Game 7. The Lightning imrobably won the Stanley Cup. I have never seen a crow go so nuts.
Event 5 Superbowl ??? In Miami Colts-Dallas. I was on the Colt sidelines (there's a long story there). Colts won on a last second field Goal by Jim O'Brien, who as far as I know never did anything else in his career.

PB and Klyd's mention of the October, 1986 Mets playoff games reminded me of a sporting event that DIDN'T happen on October 13, 1986. Mr. Babe and I were married a day and were on our way to the airport to go on our honeymoon. It was raining, and for some reason, our idiot limo driver decided to drive past Shea on the way, knowing there was a playoff game. Well, the traffic was horrendous, and we were going to miss our flight. The traffic finally let up, and the limo driver sped up to make up time. The roads were pretty wet, he comes around a curve, and there's an accident in our lane. He was hydroplaning all over the road. He smashed right into the other car and totaled the limo. Well, we ended up making our flight, although we were a bit shaken and bruised.
And the game got canceled because of the rain!!!!

I was negative 11 years old at the time The greatest Sporting Event that I attended was the 7th Game of the 1982 World Series between St. Louis and Milwaukee. The game was on a Wednesday and bleacher tickets went on sale the previous Saturday. A couple of buddies and I arrived about 5:30 pm on Friday to stand in line for tickets. The line was about six blocks long. I was 15 at the time and it was a prty staying up all night. It started to rain and it so happened that our place in line was underneith a train trestle. We probably sacked out about 4 or 5 am and laughing at every else as they would get wet. We awoke about 2-3 hours later as the line started to move (ticket windows opened up). Looking around half a sleep, I noticed every thing was white and my sleeping bag was covered white. I groggily thought it must have snowed but realized it was pretty warm out. Then I heard cooing and looked up and noticed the hundreds of pigeons on the trestle that were shitting on us all night Oh well we got tickets for the third row of the bleachers in right field. Well, the following day I was scheduled to go to the hospital for some tests. I ended up being in there for a week as thye took tons of blood, bone marrow and a gland out of my neck. Probably souns worse than it was as now all the stuff they did would probably be done on an outpatient basis. Bottom line -- on Wednesday, I told the physician / hospital "I have tickets for the 7th game of the World Series, you either give me a pass to leave or I am sneaking out". They took a gland out of my neck that morning but they gave me a pass to leave that night. It was a great game (if you are a Cardinal fan!) and "we" won 6-3 if I recall. Joquin Andujar, the Cardinals ace got the win after keith Hernandez hit a cutch basis loaded hit late in the game after the Cardinals were down 3-1. After the last out, I (along with thousands of my closest friends) storm the field as I jumped over the wall. I still have the dirt from thrid base that I scooped up. Many were cuting up the astroturf as souvenirs and I considered but changed my mind after seeing the mounted police clubbing the the faithful attempting to do so. I have probably watched 150-175 games in Busch Stadium but this by far had to be the most memorable and enjoyable experience.

That 1986 playoff between the Astros and the Mets is maybe the best League Championship Series ever to only go 6 games. The Stros had an early 4-0 lead in that game 3, and looked poised to take a 2-1 series lead. The deciding game 6 went 16 innings, a record at the time. That game fell on October 15th, 1986. I remember, because it was my parents' 30th anniversary. My brother and I took about 40 people out to dinner that night at Frankie and Johnnie's Pine Tavern, on Bronxdale Avenue. You couldn't get any of the men out of the bar area, so in hindsight, I really felt bad for my Mom.

The Stros had an early 4-0 lead in that game 3, and looked poised to take a 2-1 series lead. The deciding game 6 went 16 innings, a record at the time. Back in the day when the LCS was best of 5, the 1980 Astros/Phillies NL LCS was a great one. It went the full 5 games with the last 4 going extra innings. Game 1 was determined by a late inning homer by Greg Luzinski. There were controversial plays, improbable heroics, and a late inning surge that saw Nolan Ryan blowing a three run lead late in Game 5. I'm going to date myself here, but this was a great era of baseball. I loved that when the LCS games were best-of-five and, better yet, they were played during the day and would be on when I came home from school. I used to take a radio to school and sneak some time in listening on a headphone to the beginnig of the game. I remember seeing some great games during this time period. This was before baseball became so corporate and gave in to the almighty television dollar. Now, kids can't stay up and watch these games that start at 8:30 and end at midnight.

I am really dating myself here when I say baseball lost its soul when it started with the playoff system. My earliest memories of baseball start with the early 70s. The Pirates in '71 and then the A's of the 70s, arguably the coolest team in baseball history...although I rooted against them. So I just missed the days without playoffs. I agree with goombah that the playoffs pre wild card and best of five were better than what we have today. There was a sense ogf urgency about each game, and you knew who was playing whom and when. The day games were especially interesting as there was something surreal and special about a 3pm game on a Wednesday in October. I understand that reverting to that system will reduce revenue, so I reluctantly accept it. Oh, well.

Do you not like any of the US sports mate? I love the NFL but i also like the baseball and basketball! Obviously "our" football is tops, but i also love rugby(both codes),cricket, boxing, darts, snooker, wrestling(watching it with the kids of course),athletics and horse racing if i fancy having a bet! I'm not to keen on tennis but my wife loves it so i usually end up watching it anyways
I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees!
