I'm in shock right now. It's a horrible situation no matter how you look at it...but ESPECIALLY this time of year. I don't have a great relationship with my mother. We don't talk much anymore...and she's not my favorite person in the world. But I would never wish something like this on ANYBODY...much less my own mother. She's upset because she lost all the Christmas presents she bought (not to mention the rest of her possessions). I made sure to remind her that possessions are just possessions. They can be replaced. Everything that was important got out. I'm so sad right now.

There was a chimney fire in my mom's house last night. Her house burned to the ground. Everybody got out ok, but they lost everything. All that remains from her house is the keys. OMG!!!!! That is horrible. But thank GOD that no one was hurt and that everyone got out ok. This must be a terrible shock to your mom. I can't even imagine. Please, if there is ANYTHING that we can do here, or anything that you need, DON'T hesitate to ask. Check your PM Don Cardi

I was shocked to read about this, XDCX.
As others have already said, thank God there was no loss of life and your mother is OK physically.
Material possessions are one thing, but a human life is priceless.
Again, as DC said, if there is anything the BB can do...

First of all...I'd like to thank everyone for the outpouring of concern and well wishes. I've said this before, and I'll say it again...you guys are undoubtedly the nicest and warmhearted people that I've never met. Hopefully that "never" will change sometime soon. Judging by all the well wishes...I'm gonna be presumptious and assume everyone would like an update: The Red Cross has housed my mom and her family in a local motel for the night...and they've secured a house for them that they can move into as early as tomorrow. They've nothing left...so it won't take long for them to move in. The Red Cross has given them brand new jackets...and vouchers for some furniture. My mom's landlord is doing what he can to make the transistion as comfortable as possible. There are a lot of people reaching out and helping them...which is a hugh relief...and at the same time very humbling. They were able to recover a few things from the rubble...some CDs and my step-dad's credit card...and the Christmas presents my mom bought my nephews. Everything else is gone. Baby pictures, heirlooms, everything. I've been praying all day...and thanking the Lord that they made it out of the house ok. When my mom called me this morning and told me what happened...all I could think was "Jesus Christ...I almost lost my mother last night." That thought is still haunting me right now, and it chills me to the bone. From the bottom of my heart...I thank you all for your kind words and well wishes. The GangsterBB is like one BIG extended family...and I love you all like my family. God bless you guys.

I wish I'd caught this sooner...
XDC, I am so very sorry for what happened, and I echo the sentiments of everyone else. Thank God that your mom made it out okay. It is, of course, a terrible thing to happen, but most important is that everybody is safe, well, and alive. Material possessions are just "things" - a human life is much more significant, and I am so glad your loved ones were alright.
I wish you and them all the best in recovery, and as has been said, if there's anything we can do, we're always here. Even if you just need someone to talk to, always know you can count on your BB family.
You'll be in my prayers.

XD, I'm sorry I'm just seeing this now. What a horrible horrible thing to happen. I can only echo everyone else's sentiments and tell you how sorry I am for your mother and you and your family. Although words don't comfort too much, and it's repeated by everyone, thank God nobody lost their life. I too will pray for your family and that people continue to reach out to help, especially during this Christmas season. God bless you all. TIS

I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles, XDCX. My prayers are for you and your family as you put your lives back in order. May God see you through it. It is important that noone was injured.
I remember my father telling me a story that was told to him by a friend who woke up one night to find his home engulfed in flames. He frantically got his wife and two young children out of the house as smpke and fire were spreading.
Once outside, the thought hit him that he had enough time to run inside and grab a Band-Aid cannister, filled with $800.00 (no small fortune in the 60's), which was kept in a dresser. He ran inside, opened the dresser and grabbed the cannister when he heard his young daughter's terrified voice call him. She had followed him back inside. He turned, couldn't see her through the smoke, but eventually heard her coughing. Taking her in his arms, he went outside again thinking how foolish he had been.
He never minded the fact that in his haste to save his daughter a second time, the money had sppilled from his cannister and was destroyed. He saved the cannister to the day he died.
Stay well, XDCX, and let us know how you and your family are coping.

God, that's horrible news, XDCX! You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers, my friend. You are right, possessions are just possessions and they can always be replaced. Thanks God nobody was hurt. I do hope your Mom will settle down soon and wish this sad event will get you closer. Hold on, XDCX, and please keep us updated.

xDC -
Thats really a crummy break that your mother got, but its important that she remember she is alive and well. Most of her material things can be replaced.
I know what she's going though, and I speak from experience when I say this - she'll get over it.
Twenty nine years ago, just before Thanksgiving, I got a call at work from my downstairs neighbor. My apartment was on fire. I raced home (on what was agonizingly the longest 30 minute subway ride of my life) only to find the firemen "cleaning up" their equipment. I asked one of them about my cats. He said they found one and put him into a box in the courtyard. Not fully understanding I raced into the courtyard to find the box with the dead cat inside. I raced upstairs, and through my tears and remaining smoke I saw a sight I'll never forget. The walls were TOTALLY charred starting at four feet off the floor. Everything had been consumed, and, in a state of shock, I started calling the name of the other cat hoping that he'd answer. Of course he didn't. I found his body under the bed. I placed his body in the box with his brother and called my wife to come home.
ALL of our possessions were lost. We salavaged some pieces of wood furniture (and for years afterwards whenever it was humid the smell of smoke was still evident despite all the cleanings) but our greatest sorrow was the loss of our two cats.
Out of tragedies SOMETHING good always comes. In my case this something was a different side of my father that I had never seen before.
My wife and I stayed with my parents for about a week until we found a new apartment. The first night there we sat down for a few drinks, feeling totally miserable. My father sat down with us, and told us that he understood how we felt. I almost cried my response that he couldn't have understood because he never had a pet (that I had known of). He then told a story about when he was a kid. He had a dog, a German shepherd, that he absolutely loved. The dog ran off its leash and was killed by a truck. My dad, had tears in his eyes when the story was over. He was the toughest son-of-a-bitch I ever knew and he never spoke of that dog again. (The story was "verified" by my aunt, my dad's younger sister, some years later). I looked at my father differently after that.
Anyway, all that aside, I hope your mom is able to pick up the pieces and get on with her life. Whatever the difficulties are between you two I hope you can overcome them. Life is too short to harbor grudges ESPECIALLY with a family member.

Again, thanks for all the well wishes everybody. They truly do mean a lot. Thanks for sharing those stories, klydon and SC. Everybody's still pretty torn up about what happened, but they've definitely been counting their blessings. The Red Cross has been great. They've already found them another house to move into...and the community has really come together to help out in any way they can. Slowly but surely...my mom and her family are getting back on their feet. Being a believer in prayer...I'd like to thank your prayers. They seem to be working.
