While watching the Saga on my DVR, I slowed down the scene where the old man who was singing at Connie's wedding gets out of the car at Vito's funeral. It turns out that both my friends, Turnbull and SC, were right. He is not Nazorine's father, as I originally thought he was. If you slow down and go frame by frame when the cars pull up in the cemetary, you can see one of the other Don's getting out of a car and then the old man coming out of that same car right behind him.

Then if you go back to the commission meeting, if you pay close attention, as Vito is introducing the heads of the families and the camera is scanning the room, you can see the same old man who was singing at Connie's wedding sitting at the table.

So my friends, you both were correct. The old man is NOT Nazorine's father.

I owe the both of you a dinner.

Right before he gets out of the car ( above pic ) in the movie you can see one of the other Dons getting out of the same car.

Why did anyone think he was Nazorine's father. How did that come up?

Also, the guy who was shot in the elevator was a short, animated guy. It wasn't Stracci.

Maybe Paramount fell short of actors at that time and made one play the roles of two.

In the wedding scene we hear and see Mama Corleone yell out "Nazorine" inviting him to sing, the scene switches to Sonny and Lucy and then it switches back and we see that the old man is singing. So there was speculation that he could have been Nazorine's father. But now we know that it wasn't because of the two scenes that I mention above.

I never said that he was Stracci. But the short animated Don who was shot in the elevator IS the guy that gets out of the same car right before the old man.

Connie's wedding gave us a great introduction to FFC's fanatical attention to detail, and the old guy provides a sterling example. If you look very closely, he's got his glasses in the breast pocket of his coat while singing. A very realistic touch: vanity would prompt him to take off his glasses for his show, but he'd put them in an accessible place so he wouldn't forget to don them after he got off the stage.
Other nice touches in that scene:
--Any movie set in the early Forties will show men wearing short ties (saved silk for parachutes during WWII). FFC showed the young girls' hair tied with wool ribbons--another realistic touch because silk and rayon were needed for the war effort.
--Any producer or designer can rent Thirties and Forties cars. FFC made sure that they had gas rationing stickers in their windshield ("A" visible in lower corner).

Help me remember.

At the Dons conference as Vito is introducing the NY dons there's one of them who is combing his hair. Who is that.

In the end Barzini (City Hall), Tattaglia (in bed), Cuneo(in revolving door), and who in the elevator gets it? The old man (whoever that is, never gets hit, right?

No, the old man does NOT get hit.

The Don's that are hit are Cuneo, Stracci, Tattaglia and Barzini.

The Don combing his hair at the convention was Tattaglia--nice touch for a pimp! He got machine-gunned with the hooker in his bed. Barzini, as you know, got it on the steps of an office building. Cuneo was whacked in the revolving door. Stracci was shotgunned in the elevator. Given that Clemenza let loose with both barrels of a shotgun in that small space, I wonder how the elevator operator and the other guy could have survived.

Whoever the old guy is,he looks sooo silly and stupid when he's singing. It looks like he's taking it way too serious and when he starts dancing,it just makes him look even more stupid. It's almost like he thinks he's too good or something.Cracks me up every time.

I always thought Stracchi was the guy who got it in the elevator. Refer back to the introductions Vito made at the Convention.

The one Clemenza shotgunned in the elevator.

(Neri shot Barzini; Willie Cicci got Cuneo in the revolving door; Rocco Lampone shot Philip Tattaglia in bed with the whore).

I am still confused over this. Cuneo gets shot in the revolving door. As the camera pans across the attendees at the dons' conference, I don't recall seeing the don that was shot inthe elevator. It certainly wasn't the tall, elderly guy that we've identified as Stracci. Right? Where else in the movie was he identified?

The GF is coming on in a few minutes. I'll watch those scenes again. But let me know what you think.

OK... here is Stracci at the meeting (on the right; the left is Don Zaluchi from Detroit):

And here is Stracci in the elevator (the second guy in back):

OK, SC, I have a question. Clemenza kills him in the elevator. However, there are three men in the elevator and the shotgun only fires twice. Would Clemenza leave a witness??

I always thought that exact same thing!! Unless the power of the shotgun blasts killed two of them in one shot.

The third guy that is hidden is dressed up in what looks like to be an elevator operator's uniform. I don't know that he ever had a chance to even see Clemenza as the shooter.

Doubtful, but he could've easily got two with one shot. Stracci probably tried to hide behind the elevator operator after the first shotgun blast.

Thanks, guys. Mr. Babe brought this up the last time we watched the movie, and I've been meaning to post it here for a few weeks, but kept forgetting. So thanks to SC for posting the photo that reminded me!

Thanks. I just watched the Dons' meeting and as the camera pans from right to left past Tattaglia there is the elderly guy. Just as he comes in the frame Vito thanks Victor Stracci at which time the camera then points across the table to the Don sitting next to Zalucci. So, it is confusing. The elderly guy is obviously a Don, but he is never identified with any family. So, since all the NY dons are accounted for, maybe he's head of the NJ or Philly families.

As far as the elevator shots are concerned, keep in mind that Clemenza is firing a shotgun at close range in quite a confined area. It is not likely that anyone inside survived. The better question is how did Clemenza know that Stracci was in the elevator since Clemenza was running up the steps at the time.

By the way, for a short time I was an elevator operator when I came home from the army. It was in a hospital and it was one of those older manually operated ones.

What kind of toilet paper did they have back then? I don't recall a bathroom scene; other than Connie getting belt-whipped by Carlo. I'll have to look to see if there is a roll; if it's two ply or very crude with wood chips in it, since good toilet paper was likely sent overseas for the soldiers.

Louie's in the Bronx. They had an old-fashion' toilet -- you know, with the box, and - and - and - ah the chain-thing and the one ply rough type toilet paper. They didn't need the two ply because they had the best veal in the city. ;\)

Well, if that were the case, why does the Nazorine go to Vito for help instead of his own father who was a don. He is one of the dons at the dons' conference.

No Olivant, you miss the whole point here. And being that our friend Plaw, whom you quoted, is no longer here to answer you about this, I will take the liberty of answering for him.

No one ever said that the guy was a Don AND Nazorine's father. At the time several of us did not realize that he was one of the Dons. So we were speculating that because Mama, in the wedding scene, motioned and called for Nazorine to come up and sing, and then we are shown the old man singing, that he may have been Nazorine's father.

No one here ever said that he was BOTH.

Don Cardi cool

Five - ten years from now, they're gonna wish there was American Cosa Nostra. Five - ten years from now, they're gonna miss John Gotti.
