Scorsese, Wahlberg roll dice on HBO series

Tue Mar 6, 2:28 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Director Martin Scorsese has teamed with his "Departed" co-star Mark Wahlberg for an HBO drama series about the development of Atlantic City.

The project will be developed in conjunction with the book, "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City" by Nelson Johnson, which has been optioned by the cable network.

According to the book's official description, "Boardwalk" chronicles Atlantic City "from its birth as a quiet seaside health resort, through the notorious backroom politics and power struggles, to the city's rebirth as an entertainment and gambling mecca where anything goes."

Atlantic City is a familiar setting for Scorsese, whose 1986 feature "The Color of Money" took place there.

Scorsese and Wahlberg will serve as executive producers. Scorsese won an Oscar last month for directing "The Departed," which was named best picture. Wahlberg received an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in the mob saga.

Scorsese is also working with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger on a movie spanning three decades in the music business. Scorsese will direct "The Long Play," and produce the film with the British rocker. Additionally, Scorsese directed a Stones documentary set for release later this year.

I don't have a tv and will probably never get to see this, but I was wondering if Scorcese will ever deviate from his mobster niche. It seems like all his popular works have been on this theme, except maybe for Taxi Driver. I know he has done temptation, kundun etc but those are not what he is famous for. I will probably not watch another crime/mob drama made by him.

SVSG, Scorsese keeps playing with mobsters because people like mobsters, and people pay to watch mobsters terrorize the rest of humanity, and they help pay Scorsese's bills. Its like Kurosawa that kept making those samurai movies. He only would have quit if people quit watching them.

Besides, with his biggest financial hit ever in THE DEPARTED winning Best Picture & Director Oscars, Scorsese wants to expand his own personal media career. In a way, he's doing now finally what Lucas and Spielberg had done for decades.

Anyway, if its any consolation svsg, his SILENCE sounds damn promising.

In the documentary Scorsese on Scorsese (2004) Marty at the time said of his 20 major films to date, only 5 had been in that genre. That's only 25%.

The documentary is included in the Special Features of the 2-Disc version of The Departed.
