You all might remember George A. Romero, the filmmaker behind the classic NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, its beloved mall-shooting zombie frenzy DAWN OF THE DEAD, the doomsday bunker melodrama zombie movie DAY OF THE DEAD, and the real enjoyable LAND OF THE DEAD from 2005. He also shot good pictures like CREEPSHOW, MARTIN, KNIGHTRIDER, etc.

Anyway, he takes a swipe at last year's mega-blockbuster hit THE DA VINCI CODE, and modern horror filmmakers:

"Romero himself saw "The Da Vinci Code" recently, and it's a bad subject for the director. "I thought it was garbage," he said. "I think Ron Howard has absolutely no passion towards what he does. We had passion, we didn't have the skill. He has the skills, he doesn't have the passion. It's like $100 million dollars wasted as far as I'm concerned; you could feed Zimbabwe with that."

Ouch. It's not just Howard and "The Da Vinci Code" that Romero dislikes. He has a lot of criticism to go around for some of the new directors in Hollywood these days. "Who's going to remember "Saw III" in 20 years? Forget about it," Romero said. "Here's the thing, man: I think that most filmmakers today, they shot music videos," Romero said. "They shot Faith Hill's last music video, and they think they're hot shit. Do they know how to handle it? No, they don't. Put 'em at an editing table, and they're clueless.""

I know some folks enjoyed DA VINCI CODE as entertainment, but Romero's opinion, I totally agree with. Opie, Hanks, McKellen, and the rest knew they would get a nice payday, and they got it. I can't blame them for paying off their dental bills for the next decade.

Thoughts?

You pretty much just answered your own quesiton, money. Unfortunately, it makes the world go round. I agree that Saw III won't be remembered in 20 years. Was it entertaining? Sure. Did it need to be made? Maybe. Maybe not. But does Lion's Gate care what George A. Romero thinks? Of course not, each Saw continues to out do its predecessors at the box office. Will Saw IV and Saw V need to be made? Probably not but what guess what, they're going to. There's so many prequels and sequels today that don't need to be made that are getting made. As long as studios continue to finance and green light such projects, I don't see an end to it.

Then again, Romero's opinion > Lion's Gate as far as horror in my eyes.

Hey, how's it going?

It might very well be to you and to many others. The point I was making is that it won't make a difference to Lion's Gate since they continue to make money off of them.

Irish and DA are right.

Romero wipes his ass with most of the hacks that work at Lions Gate, save for Rob Zombie. Now that is a real trooper of horror for our times.

Lets hope he doesn't get ravished hard by fanboy nation over his HALLOWEEN remake.

Anyway, horror sequels are made until they quit making money, whatever remakes or restarts or mind-numbingly stupid logic for continuing sequels.

My point exactly. Also, I'm looking forward to Rob Zombie's Halloween remake. I really enjoyed his last work, The Devil's Rejects. Although my only beef with the film so far is if they don't use the original score in the movie. I'm sorry but that score is synonymous with the Halloween franchise.

ACtually, Zombie is using the original score.

He just dumped his planned remix score that apparently bombed.
