It was done that way for a purpose. I believe that FFC wanted to show us that after losing his daughter due to his lifestyle ( like he lost all the woman that he loved due to his lifestyle ), Michael was to physically live out a long life of suffering with the guilt and the memories of all those that he loved leaving him, be it by death or by choice. I believe that when Mary was killed, so was Michael, not physically, but in heart and spirit.
His punishment was to live a long life, all alone, living with those memories day after day.
