The other day, we had George A. Romero go ballistic on Opie's DA VINCI CODE amd modern horror.

Now we have Kurt Russell, the upcoming star of the GRINDHOUSE Z-grade slasher-car action movie DEATH PROOF(from Tarantino), sorta pissed about the upcoming ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake, which actually now turns out it seems will only be a Snake Plissken "prequel." The article from IGN...

Kurt Blasts Escape Remake
The original Snake Plissken ain't happy.
by Stax

March 22, 2007 - The news that New Line Cinema is remaking Escape From New York -- and have cast 300 Gerard Butler as Snake Plissken -- hasn't exactly met with universal approval from many fans of the original film. And one of those fans is the man who starred in it, Kurt Russell.

Russell fumed about the remake to Entertainment Weekly, especially the casting of a Scottish actor to succeed him as one-eyed badass Snake Plissken. "I will say that when I was told who was going to play Snake Plissken, my initial reaction was 'Oh, man!' [Russell winces]. I do think that character was quintessentially one thing. And that is, American," the actor advised EW.com.

To Russell, his Escape From New York anti-hero wasn't just any other role. "People come up to me and say, 'You played Snake Plissken.' I didn't play Snake Plissken, I created him!"

He is also adamantly against the idea of making a cameo or playing any other role in it. "(Expletive) that! I am Snake Plissken! It's like Sean Connery always watching someone else do their version of Bond. I think one of the things, for instance, about Escape From New York that appealed to me was that it wasn't a special effects extravaganza. It's a quiet, dark world and it revolved around watching the behavior of this one guy. He's a fascinating character. In fact, he's the most complex character I've ever played."

Whats funny is, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK took place in a quite shitty paramilitary police American state in 1997...is this prequel gonna happen in 1992 Chicago(where the Cubs win the World Series in this fake reality) ?

Thoughts?

I think enough is enough already! I'm sick of these so-called remakes and prequals coming out, tarnishing fantastic, classic films. How can you possibly see any other as Snake Plisskin.

That is just my opinion, but it seems like there is no origionality in filmaking these days, so everybody has to churn out these ramakes that we don't need. I wish filmakers would just leave things the way they are.

Usually, I try to defend remakes/prequels....but I've got to agree with Brywne Byte on this case.

They're not made BB because of a lack of originality...its just a lazy way to make a ton of money.

I mean, ROCKY BALBOA made a solid profit in theatres....although the Rob Zombie HALLOWEEN remake will be interesting, whatever its a success or failure.

Give Zombie a chance. He proved people wrong he made the very capable and well-made THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, and while its flawed, HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES comes from a mind that's willing to terrify people in terms of imagery and violence....my sort of guy.

I mean, look at what John Carpenter did with his superior remake of Howard hawks' THE THING....or David Cronenberg, who made the generally-better received THE FLY remake over its forgotten 50's B movie.

I dig "300," but this re-make is almost blasphemous. They need to leave the "Escape" movies alone and concentrate on some originality...something Hollyweird seems to be lacking these days.
