Yes, but I think "10 hours" was implied to be "10 hours not including 'just footage' " Or, at least, that's how I had interpreted it.
I can't remember, but I think I heard it on the commentary track.
"Somebody told me when the bomb hits, everybody in a two mile radius will be instantly sublimated, but if you lay face down on the ground for some time, avoiding the residual ripples of heat, you might survive, permanently fucked up and twisted like you're always underwater refracted. But if you do go gas, there's nothing you can do if the air that was once you is mingled and mashed with the kicked up molecules of the enemy's former body. Big-kid-tested, motherf--ker approved."

I've been busy lately, so I've missed the first two pages of this thread until now. I think this movie "flopped" opening weekend because like someone said it was Easter weekend. It's a time when families with children go to the movies. I would have seen it this weekend if it weren't for Easter and family get-togethers and spending time coloring eggs with the kids and all that. That's why I plan to see it this next weekend, I hope! I can't wait much longer! BTW, nice Oregon trail references earlier "One of your oxen has died"

No, seriously though, it was all hell. Last time I'll sit in a theater while I am very aware that a posse of homicidal maniacs are in the front row, munching on LSD, and not immediately want to flee.

On July 3, 2007, BCI Eclipse will release Welcome to the Grindhouse: Pick-up and The Teacher and Welcome to the Grindhouse: Evil Eye and Black Candles on DVD. Inspired by the new film, Grindhouse, these first two volumes will celebrate double feature exploitation films. Source: IGN Anyone ever seen or heard of these?

I Spit On Your Grave ** 1/2 (First Viewing)
The film follows Jennifer, a writer who is working on a new novel and needs to get out of the city to finish it. She hires a riverside apartment in upstate New York to finish her novel, attracting the attention of a number of rowdy male locals. They catch Jenifer one day and strip her naked for the village idiot (Matthew) and rape her. Jennifer is later attacked and raped a further two times by the four degenerates, and her novel is also destroyed. But Jennifer slowly recovers and in her now-twisted, psychotic mind, she then begins to seek revenge on the four men who raped her.
The second Grind House film I've seen (with Coffy being the first). Obviously a lot of money wasn't spent on costumes seeing as how nobody seemed to hardly wear any. There's about a 20-30 minute rape scene and I've never seen this much nudity in a film unless it was a porno. An enjoyable movie about revenge for those who have never seen it. And for those who have, any thoughts?
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Vampyros lesbos ** (First Viewing)
Linda is a young American lawyer, working in a law office in Istanbul. During the night, she has passionate dreams in which a sexy brunette harasses, and makes love to her, from which she's unable to defend herself. A minor case about an inheritance forces her to travel to one of the small islands off the Turkish coast. Then, her nightmares come upon her - in a lively manner.
Another Grind House film that was enjoyable if not laughable as well. Once again Quentin Tarantino inspires me to branch off into other genre's.

zzzzzzz
Oh sorry.
How about some Larry Cohen then Irish? Me and my friends laughed at that lesploitation from the Jesus Franco factory of the 70s...back in high school.
No try some Larry Cohen titles: Q: THE WINGED SERPENT, GOD TOLD ME TOO, THE STUFF(or, the ice cream-themed remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS), BONE, BLACK CAESAR, HELL UP IN HARLEM, etc.
Better yet, TROMA movies!

All these exploitation films are reminding me of a little movie I saw a few years back called Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter. Anytime you can have Christ come back in the year 2000 to kill Lesbian Vampires by means of Kung-Fu, you've got one hell of a film. Throw in an excellent musical number performed by Jesus and the good citizens of Canada and you may just have the Citizen Kane of our generation.

You can discuss it here or open a new thread. I've been talking about IGN's top ten Grind House films plus the Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino film. Well then let me start by asking everyone who has seen it, which movie was your favorite? Planet Terror or Death Proof? I liked Death Proof better, but I was way more entertained by Planet Terror if that makes sense. I liked how Planet Terror seemed to stick to the cliche B movies of the 1970's. Such as horrible writing (bad one-liners, extremely unrealistic characters, etc...) along with overwhelming gory shock-value. Death Proof on the other hand, without giving away spoilers, had me and my girlfriend cheering outloud several times. I agree with you Irish, this movie was a must see in theaters. I went and saw it on a Friday night, and unfortunately there were about 5 other couples in the theater with us. However, it gave us the feeling of the old grind house theaters which were never packed. These two movies along with the fake trailers were awesome. I am happy to have seen it in the theater! Since I woke up this morning, my mind has been flooded with random images from that movie. Tarantino is a genius.

I'm sorry but it was just AWESOME seeing Kurt Russell as a bad guy. I saw him in the previews but when I saw him take Rose McGowan in his car, slam on the brakes, kill her and not even think twice about it, my jaw dropped. It's not everyday you get to see Kurt Russell as the baddie. I did enjoy Plant Terror but what I found most enjoyable was the grainy/grimy look of the film. And yes the trailers were awesome but what really upsets me is if the numbers don't turn around for this film, there won't be a Grindhouse 2 (which if memory serves me correctly I heard could have been Machete and Thanksgiving). Let's pray that's not the case as I would LOVE to see another Grindhouse (especially with those 2 movies). Well put

Robert Rodriguez has been working for years, and failing, to be the next John Carpenter. PLANET TERROR is he best attempt at it. He captures Carpenter's electro-syntheziser music work, the siege-mentality of ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, the zombie batshit crazy of PRINCE OF DARKNESS, and hey...he has a gun-wielding badass outlaw hero like Snake Plissken from the ESCAPE movies.
Its a decent movie, and its enjoyable. Too bad Rodriguez fucked around with rose McGowan(literally), got his ass divorced, and went overbudget by $10 million...but still, it was good.
"Where....is....THE SHIT?"
P.S. - Hell, even Tarantino acted good...and QT the actor usually goes in the same sentence with "sucks."
PLANET TERROR (2007) - ***
FOR IRISH: Its decent.
But yeah, DEATH PROOF is unsurprisingly better and most of all, it plays off the "Missing Reel" gag much better. (Cocktease!)
What I loved was how Kurt Russell goes on and on about his stunt work, in the usual QT-pop culture referencing dialogue, then he stops and asks people if they even know what he's talking about. I love that QT actually made a sly joke at himself and his schtick.
FOR IRISH: Tarantino makes fun of himself, Russell rocks, and DEATH PROOF is better.
While Irishman hated ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK but liked PLANET TERROR(Huh?), Russell had one quality that few would-be Hollywood action stars have: He's willing to break the stoic macho-ballsy role. He played a John Wayne-mouthy-but-useless hero in BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, an unredeeming anarchist outlaw in ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, a pissed-off banker that goes hardcore in BREAKDOWN...
...and in DEATHPROOF, remember when he acts like a crying pussy after he got shot? Awesome.
FOR IRISH: Respect the Russell Mullet!
But I do agree with CHUD website on one thing. Tarantino can, like Carpenter of old days, direct action very well. Its just amazing how Rodriguez has CGI and some insane sillyness for the finale, but the car stunts and choreography is more impressive and intense-as-shit for me to grip my theatre seat than that cartoon garbage with wheels that Michael Bay does.
My point is, DEATH PROOF is even more true, with QT's own autuer spin, to the Grindhouse homage philosophy than Rodriguez, but thats splitting strawers.
DEATH PROOF (2007) - ***1/2
FOR IRISH: $70+ million for a 3 hour movie that pays respect to double-billing cheapo Z-grade flicks?
BTW, I almost wished Rodriguez had made the "Mexicansploitation" MACHETTE instead of PLANET TERROR. Imagine Danny Trejo, a guy who's spent some hard jail time as a kid, whooping ass for the little brown man and getting white titties. He's my hero.
Both movies, great trailers, the theatrical experience..
GRINDHOUSE (2007) - ****

When I saw the preview for Machete I was a little bummed because it was a fake trailer. I want to see that movie actually get made! I get the feeling though, that if Tarantino wants to make a second Grindhouse then there won't be much to stop him. (I'm trying to be optimistic here!)

...and in DEATHPROOF, remember when he acts like a crying pussy after he got shot? Awesome. Yeah! That was my favorite scene in the entire movie... When he is crying like a baby (great acting by Russel) and he looks in his rear mirror to see that white Dodge Challenger about to slam into the back of him. Then that one girl gets out and starts beating him with that metal pole. I loved it!

I never heard talk of a serious GRINDHOUSE sequel, save for jokes in interviews. Besides, look at all those movies that QT "announced" over the years that haven't happened. VEGA BROTHERS, INGLORIUS BASTARDS, etc. But I agree with blibble....I rather wished Rodriguez had made MACHETTE. I mean, Danny Trejo kicking whitey ass and grabbing whitey tits....that have ruled. Yet its sad when MACHETTE looks better than all of Rodriguez's mediocre Desperado gun movies. Tsk.
