With all of the continual changes in the world of video, distribution, the Internet, DVD and entertainment, I suppose that it was inevitable that we actually discuss the possibility of major motion pictures being shown in your own living room home theater on the SAME DAY as they open across the nation! That's right, according to the folks at EW (great story by Nicole Sperling), Comcast, the nation's largest cable operator, had spoken with major film studios about offering movies on pay-per-view the SAME DAY they hit theaters. They would likely cost between $30-50 (think about this though, if you get 4-5 people to chip in, it's the same price as in theaters), but remember that you don't have to leave your house, park, buy overpriced nachos or have to deal with cellular phones, people who talk and morons in general (unless you are that very moron, in which case, this won't help you much).

Of course, theater owners are "up in arms" about this possibility, but according to EW, 5 of the 6 major studios have already partnered with Comcast to test a separate system in two cities that allows viewers to watch movies on pay-per-view the same day as the DVD hits stores (Sony didn't participate).

So what do you guys think? Personally, I'll probably always go to the theater unless it's going to wind up costing me more for a ticket, food and drinks then it would be to fill up my gas tank. I usually love the theater atmosphere (except for yesterday because some a$$hole high schooler kept talking during PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END), but those are usually far and few in between. Most people are smart and polite enough to shut up. Plus, I just love seeing movies on the biggest screen possible!

the theater experience - the surround sound system, the big screen, watching the movie with fellow film fans, the atmosphere, the dimmed lights - is half of the fun of going to see a movie. i'm pretty positive i'd never use this home-theater system...

I don't like it. Anthony pretty much hit the nail on the head. Nothing really beats seeing a great film in a theater.

I would want to go to the theater only for the big screen. But there are so many movies that I don't mind watching on TV. But $30-$50 is very high, I wouldn't get enough sensible friends to watch the kind of movies I like to watch. I really don't care about the audience and atmosphere. Infact I like it very much when there are just a few people in the theater. It usually happens with the movies I watch. No one comes to theater to watch Babel or painted Veil. I benefit from the poor taste of the public \:D

Yeah, I'm the same way. I enjoy it more with fewer people around... And I live in a small area, so the number of people who enjoy the type of cinema that you, myself, and several others I've met through this site is extremely low.

It's an absolutely HORRIBLE idea.

Geez, I know it's an on-demand world we're living in, but give me a break.

I don't think it'll be that big of a hit if the movie will cost between $30-$50. However, I could be wrong seeing as how I never thought the idea of a Netflix would take off and that's the future of video rentals IMO. But if people prefer this way of watching new movies, I'm cool with it (less people in the theater) ;\)
