The best way to do a white load is to fill the machine with detergent and bleach, and then let it go swish, swish, swish. Then, stop the machine, and put in your whites, poking them down with a big stick. Then you start the machine again, and let it go swish, swish, swish. Then you shut it off again, and let the whites soak for at least one hour. Then, start the machine again, and let it run through the cycle. This may seem like a lot of work, but your whites come out all sparkly clean.

Of course, Plaw used to mock my obsession with my laundry. I am VERY happy when I manage to get out a tough stain.

If I can't get a tough stain out I throw it away. The same thing with missing buttons. I haven't sewn on a button in years.

Yea I do too, but especially if it's something I really like, I try real hard to remove the stain.

I do sew buttons, but that's about it. I remember my mother darning socks. Who does that anymore? I use to hate it when they were darned by the toe or heel. It'd rub agains my shoe and feel very uncomfortable.

My co-worker has a 99 year old grandmother who glues Dr. Shoel's inserts into a $5.00 bedroom slippers. She brought her grandmother 2 pairs when they were in town last month and told her to trash those. You know she's not going to..haha.

Ha ha!! You know, I think for the older folks, and those who grew up during the depression, they tend to "NOT get rid" of things.

My father-in-law, God rest his soul, was a kind generous man who would give you the shirt off his back. Yet, when it came to himself and spending money, he had to save whereever he could. He didn't "have" to save, but it became an obession. Bargains were a challenge to him.

True story: (and keep in mind, this is not a man who had very little money and was merely trying to survive). One time he went to a garage sale at some farm (in Michigan). The owners were selling an air conditioner for a chicken coop right? Well, the price was so good he couldn't resist. He didn't have chickens, didn't live on a farm, but thought someday he may need, if not the coop, maybe parts of it to "make" something. Ha ha ha. Needless to say, it was stored in the attic and never used.

My mother still darns socks. She also saves old bread. She puts it into the oven to dry out, and makes bread crumbs. "Waste not, want not"!

My entire family makes fun of me and my laundry. I rarely use the dryer for the girls' stuff, but hang dry them, especially my younger one. She's grown almost 5 inches this year, but hasn't gained much weight, so I have a hard time finding her pants. When I do, I'm not taking a chance on shrinking them in the dryer. I even iron her jeans.

I don't remember, but most likely. One time there was a sale on a particular type of shoe. He couldn't resist the bargain, so brought 3 pairs of the same exact shoe.

That darn darning is a lost art form.

Growing up, I had two older brothers, so my wardrobe consisted almost entirely of hand-me-downs. Most of my pants had those iron on patches on the knees. I swear my mother used to buy those patches in bulk.

Join the club. I remember those patches well. I'm the youngest and have 3 older sisters, so my clothes were always 10 years behind the times. Too bad today everyone's different sizes and couldn't borrow anything from each other. Except maybe socks.

Yea, I know about hand-me-downs. My sister is one year older than I am. We were so close in age that as little girls, we'd get the same outfit, only different color/sizes. When she outgrew hers, I'd get it and have two outfits the same style but different colors.

Today the kids call them designer jeans! Pre-washed (worn) with designs (holes, patches and tears) in them and pay $100 a pair.

Yea and for 100 bucks they are 5 sizes to big, hanging down their ass(es)! (at least out here in CA they are). I saw a young boy after school talking on a cell phone with one hand and holding up his pants with the other.

The shorts also now fall somewhere around the shins. One of my older son's buddies didn't know why I was laughing when he said he needed a new swim suit because his old one was ripped at the knee.

I know what you mean about the baggy pants. Although, believe it or not, there are boys in my daughter's high school that actually wear girl's jeans because they fit better!

I think that before Michael Moore starts babbling about healthcare, he should lose about 100 pounds himself.

I'm all for health care reform, and having donated quite a bit of my time and money to Calvary Hospice, Jacoby Medical Center and St Barnabas Hospital, etc...year after year, I know just what kind of crisis the country is in.

But Michael Moore is a piece of trash. I actually lean to the left on most political issues, and even I find his going into Cuba repulsive.

How long before he shows up wearing one of those Che Guevara tee shirts?
