Actually I was an Elvis fan as a kid. I remember exactly what I was doing when they announced his death on the radio.
Sad the way that he destroyed himself.
I too remember. My family had just returned from South Carolina where we vacationed and visited relatives. On the way there we noticed a billboard near a large hotel in North Carolina, promoting an Elvis concert in a couple of weeks. My mother said that if only we had planned the trip a week or two later, we could have gone to the show on our way home.
He died on the day we returned. I was on the back porch when my mother had told me. She heard it on the ABC Evening News with Frank Reynolds.
