Well, at least he'd be a good Nazi.
or a Scientologist wacko of an asshole that lost respect and most of his fans. Oh, I thought we were just talking about his movie... I didn't know you meant "real life".

Tom Cruise usually plays "Tom Cruise."
Which would be a mission impossible for anyone else. Off-topic, but who else always suspected that he was a closet case? Then again, yes tabloids are pure trash, but one headline is my all-time favorite tabloid-headline: "Nicole to Tom: Size DOES Matter!" Something about that makes me laugh. So did the gay-photos story, but nah...

I think his daughter Suri came out of the womb looking like she should already be 30 years old. That's just creepy.

That look fits him well.
Cruise is a decent actor. I think he just picks a hell of a lot of crappy scripts.
"Somebody told me when the bomb hits, everybody in a two mile radius will be instantly sublimated, but if you lay face down on the ground for some time, avoiding the residual ripples of heat, you might survive, permanently fucked up and twisted like you're always underwater refracted. But if you do go gas, there's nothing you can do if the air that was once you is mingled and mashed with the kicked up molecules of the enemy's former body. Big-kid-tested, motherf--ker approved."

I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! lol Whaddaya want me to do? Whack a guy? Off a guy? Whack off a guy? --Peter Griffin My DVDs | Facebook | Godfather Filming Locations

I remember when "Risky business" was all the rage. Now looking back that is the most stupid, plotless movie ever made. "what the fuck?"

How does Tom Cruise playing "himself" automatically mean he's not a great actor? As far as sheer onscreen exuberance goes, I'd put him up there with most; not many people could have performed against a vet such as Paul Newman and compliment that "veteran" status while still shining on his own (in The Color of Money). And I've said it before, but I'd put him up there with the Asian action stars of the eighties and nineties for moving through a frame with such physical flair and velocity. His performance in Mission: Impossible III is excellent.
He's great in Magnolia, and if you think he's just playing "himself" in that, then he certainly isn't playing "himself" in Collateral, Eyes Wide Shut or Rain Man.
What does "playing himself" actually mean? I'm interested in this notion, because acting is a complex profession, or art, open to deconstructive practices.
He's great as over-confident characters whose world comes crashing down on them due to arrogance, ignorance or naivety: Magnolia, in which his "respect the cock, tame the [BadWord]" routine shields from the family distress he's been ignoring for years; The Color of Money, in which he's shown to be quite a novice at pool hustling; Eyes Wide Shut, in which his whole spiritual and sexual life descends into Kafkaesque paranoia; Mission: Impossible, in which his fellow secret agents are all killed in the opening twenty minutes and he must go on the run; Minority Report, in which he's framed for a murder he hasn't committed (again resulting in him going on the run); Top Gun, in which he's the young would-be top pilot, whose primary adversity is his own ego.
And note how much of the mise-en-scene his body actually embodies in Mission: Impossible III. That film's as flat as a pancake when he's not in frame. But when he is, it's exhilarating stuff.

Which films is he merely a "movie star" in? I've never actually doubted that he didn't care for a role he was playing. "Eyes wide shut"? I honestly wish mine were during that movie.
