You know what? They're worth it.

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK kicks so much ass as a guerilla-gritty made lean mean B-action machine. Plus, Isaac Hayes as the Duke of New York. He makes the U.S. President his bitch.

"Ya da duke, a #1!"

ESCAPE FROM L.A. I enjoy. Not as stylish nor as grungy as EFNY, but EFLA works as an insane escapist(pun!) Italian cinema cartoon that Hollywood rarely produces without going into Michael Bay stupidity. Plus, Bruce Campbell and Steve Buschemi in the same movie.

Its money.

THE LONG RIDERS is a pretty good Walter Hill western that had the gimmick of real-life actor brothers (Keach/Carradine/Quaid clans) as the gang itself. Really, I miss that Walter Hill of THE WARRIORS era instead of 48 HOURS era.

DARK BLUE is decent, but Kurt Russell gives it his all...and he is worth watching just for that.

Stop complaining. That's two reusable condoms and some booze-money.

And I thought finding THE FUGITIVE, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, and IN THE LINE OF FIRE at the same time in the bargain bin couldn't be topped....

Irish, I'm sure you can buy it for $7 at Circuit City. Its bargain bin in most of the retail corporate chains anyhow.

For a long time now I've thought that The Running Man would be a great movie to remake. So many remakes try to improve upon movies that were already incredible, and fail miserably. There should never be a remake of a movie, unless it is of a movie that has a lot of room for improvement, such as The Running Man. I think with modern filming techniques and CGI, etc... They could make a new version of that film that wouldn't be so 1980's-ish. It has a great idea, but the styles, and filming were so poor that it's slightly embarrassing to watch.

Then again, ninety percent of what Stephen King writes could probably use a nice remake of a movie.

No I agree Blibble, I'd be down for a remake of THE RUNNING MAN, although it wouldn't be the same without Ah-nold

Yeah, that's probably why there hasn't been a remake, because Arnold is such a presence in even the worst of movies that nobody would dare try to replace him. Besides, anyone from Hollywood would be going up against their own state Governor. He's even scarier as a politician.

For those wishing to buy ZODIAC here in a couple of weeks, you may want to hold off (I am). I've heard that a Zodiac: 2-Disc Director's Cut will arrive sometime in 2008.

Zodiac

Some of the extras will be:

-Audio Commentary by David Fincher, actors Jake Gyllenhaal, and Robert Downey Jr., screenwriter James Vanderbilt, producer Brad Fischer and crime novelist James Ellroy.

-Extensive behind-the-scenes featurettes detailing the production from start to finish.

-In-depth looks at the actual Zodiac crimes, including all-new interviews with the original investigators and survivors.

A Personal Journey Through American Movies is terrific. Just watching it makes me want to see every single movie ever made. Scorsese's rhetoric, passion and verbal diarrhoea will do that to a boy of my age.

I haven't seen that or MY VOYAGE TO ITALY. Is VOYAGE the same but dealing with Italian rather than American films?

Yeah, looking at the Italian films which influenced him directly. I've not seen it, though. He's apparently planning one for French cinema, too, the bushy-eyebrowed show-off that he is.

Wow, another one but French? That's cool. Any news on when it might come out? I'd love to see a Q&A session from NYU like The Evening With Kevin Smith.

Capo, remember how I've been wishing for an Extended Edition to GANGS OF NEW YORK? Yeah, I don't think that's going to happen. I was watching the AFI DVD of Martin Scorsese and he says he never understood director's cuts and he'd probably never do one. He just feels that the picture should be the way it was with the timing, budget, scheduling, etc. that they had. I can understand and respect that but I'd love to see the 40-45 minutes of that film that he cut out. Oh well, they'll be lost forever it looks like \:\(

Funny, I was going to post about Director's Cuts in another thread recently (I forget which) saying much of the same stuff as Marty has.

Then again, novels get revised editions published...

Capo, what "Director's Cut" edits have you seen that you feel are inferior to that of the theatrical edit?

Personal Voyage is better than My Voyage because Marty doesn't spoil the most important parts (climaxes included) of the movies like he does in the latter. Significant chunks of the movies are played.

Erm... I don't know. None, that I can think of. But I wasn't saying that; I was wondering whether or not I was in agreement with the whole concept of directing something "your way" when you submitted to the studios in the first place.
