... but we have Blockbuster, Amazon, LoveFilm, Odeon Direct, and more. Most of them are subsidiaries of LoveFilm, though.

Does LoveFilm allow you to exchange the online rentals in a store like Blockbuster as they do here in the States or is it like Netflix where it's purely online?

I just looked up the Slingbox and it seems neat -- but it seems to do the opposite of what I'd want. I'd want internet programming (such as from Netflix) to display on my TV, rather than having the TV programming appear on my computer... ;\)

It's hard for me to fathom, though, having your cable TV signal be streaming over the internet to "watch from anywhere" and still retaining any decent amount of quality. I'd have to see it to believe it I guess - but that's a lot of uploading and downloading!

Oh...good call. I actually thought is was the reverse (PC to TV)

Though it couldn't be too hard to get an HD capable video card for your PC, and then run the cables to your TV, no?

Me either. I have to payback student loans first but a couple of friends of mine have 50+-inch HD-TVs. Let's just say I make good use of it when they're not using it.

They are on the top or bottom of the screen. I think they rotate through different ones.

Note to JG: If 24fps signs up, I want .04 for consulting fee!

Anyone knows if Netflix is still offering the online download of movies? Today I was about to sign up and could not find the internet thing mentioned anywhere. Have they stopped that service? If that is not there, I might as well go with Blockbuster, where I have access to in-store movies. I want to decide by the end of this week. Help/inputs welcome.

I would say Blockbuster personally. Not just because I worked there but also because the service is an amazing deal. I'm not sure if NetFlix is still offering that service. I would assume so but I would check with Geoff or the other NetFlix subscribers.

In your opinion, will I be able to have a constant supply of movies with 2-DVDs at a time schemse (plus 3 in store ones per month)? I know that one movie is too less and 3 movies is definitely great. Just seeing if I can reduce the cost a bit.

svsg, yeah, there are over 3,000 titles you can "watch now" online, for no additional charge. You get about 1 hour/month for each dollar your monthly plan costs. They just recently lowered the 3-at-a-time plan to $16.99, so that gives you 17 hours of online watching per month. (I haven't tried it yet, tho) (2-at-a-time is $13.99/month, 14 hrs online viewing)

If you do sign up for Netflix, please use this link ;\)

svsg, I'm currently doing 3-out-at-a-time right now and with exchanging them for 3 in-store rentals (with a coupon for 1 free rental per month), plus all the Martin Scorsese DVDs I received for my birthday, plus the DVDs I buy on a weekly basis, plus clearing out my TiVo, and a little something called my thesis, AND a part time job, yes, I'm overloaded

It really just depends on how much free time you have. If you watch a movie a night like I do, 2 movies might not seem like a lot. But if you're trying to keep the cost low, I'd say go for it. You can always bump up to the 3 option.

Geoff where does it say that on the netflix website now? It used to show that deal before, now I can't see. Sorry Geoff, I have already "registered" half way. In the sense, I have a login with them, but I did not complete the address/card details and sign up for free trial yet. If it will still make any difference, I will definitely use your link if I go with Netflix \:\)

I'm really surprised that they haven't explained it before signing up...

But once I log in, there's a "Watch Now" tab, and it explains that there are over 3,000 titles you can watch "in seconds"

 Quote:

Q: What is instant viewing?
A: This feature allows Netflix members to instantly watch movies on their PCs. It is included in your monthly membership plan at no additional charge.

To watch movies instantly, you need to download and install the free Netflix Movie Viewer, special software that runs on compatible computers.

Minimum Requirements

* Computer running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or higher, or Windows Vista
* Internet Explorer version 6 or higher
* Windows Media Player version 10 or higher
* An active broadband connection to the Internet
* 1.0 GHz processor
* 512 MB RAM
* 3 GB free hard disk drive space

If you have a log-in already, try this link:

http://www.netflix.com/WatchNow

They do mention the instant watching feature; you don't have to sign in or register to see it.

After you type in netflix.com, click the How IT Works tab and below in the FAQ section is How can I watch movies instantly on my PC?

It's also on the Welcome tab mentioned briefly on the bottom right under Free Trial it says Plus movies on your PC - instantly.

Netflix's selection is much wider than BB's. Plus, the in-store exchange is limited because your brick-and-mortar store may not be as widely stocked as online is. Yes, it's free (BB just recently decreased the # of free exchanges per month for each plan), but you may have to settle for a movie that is lower in priority than stuff in your queue or a movie that you really didn't want to watch and had to "settle" for.

So what Bergman are you going to start with?

I use Blockbuster Online for the older movies that I watch (such as the Japanese Criterion films) and the in-store exchanges for the new releases every Tuesday. And what do you mean they decreased the number of free exchanges per month? Are they now limiting customers on how many in-store exchanges they can have?

Probably I am seeing a very different page than all of you. I used firefox on linux to view the site, as that is the only thing available at my work (where I am supposed to be working sincerely and not surfing ). Probably they are using different content based on the browser.

As for the Bergman, I will start with Seventh Seal I guess, as I see several recommendations for it.

Irish, the number of exchange movies in store is limited to 5 or 3 or whatever depending on the scheme. There is another scheme where it is unlimited, but the price is much higher ($25 for 3 DVDs scheme, for eg)

About Netflix
Since launching our online movie rental service in 1999, Netflix has become the world's largest online DVD rental service. Each month, Netflix provides movie entertainment to more than 6 million satisfied customers.

Since so many of you can see it, I'll assume it is there. Unfortunately I will not have internet until Aug 7th in my house. So I can't check out this feature. Timewarner has decided to take its own sweet time to install internet in my new apt

Correct page, but you quoted the Get The Details section. Check above that which is where the FAQ section is.

I'm indifferent to The Seventh Seal and kind of disappointed that this is the usual first Bergman people go to. Anyway, just remember his movies are different and don't stop at that one if you don't like it.

Haha, I don't know what's going on, either. But...

The Watch It Now feature is much more noticeable on the Start Your Free Trial tab.

Where did you hear this from? I've been doing the program about a month or 2 now and haven't heard anything like that. I've always believed that I could exchange every online rental in-store for free, with no limits (i.e. only 10 online exchanges per month or whatever the number is). This is news to me

Yes, only the $24.99 Total Access plan has unlimited in-store exchanges now. The rest have limits per month.

Where did you hear this from? I've been doing the program about a month or 2 now and haven't heard anything like that. I've always believed that I could exchange every online rental in-store for free, with no limits (i.e. only 10 online exchanges per month or whatever the number is). This is news to me

Correction; it seems the article I read was inaccurate. Only premium plans have unlimited while the other Total Access plans do have limits. I don't know if this is old news; thus, your confusion?

Sorry.
