Here are my grandparents. I don't know the exact date this was taken. My mom never really gave me the details behind when this was taken. My grandfather died in 1977 and my grandmother passed in 2000.

Very nice SC & Beth.

Many pictures of my mom shows the same hair/dress style. Something about that era fascinates me.I love to look at the styles of the 30's & 40's. There is a glamour of sorts about it to me. \:\/

Cool pix, Beth. Your mother has awesome eyes!!!

I'd guess the picture of your grandparents is from somewhere around 1940.

Now, purely speculative, I'm guessing that since your mom was born in 1935 (when the Corleones were at war with some rival Families) and your grandfather looks to be in his 30's he may have been born about 1910 (?). If so, he would have been the same age as Sonny and Tom (novel dates).

How old was he when he died?

I'm pretty sure my grandfather was probably in his early sixties when he died. My grandmother was 85 when she died in 2000, and she is the oldest that anyone in my family has lived. My grandfather owned his own business, that as it turned out contained asbestos, hence he died of lung cancer, and didn't smoke a day in his life. Since he died 23 years before my grandmother I'm thinking he was about 62 at the time.

I remember my grandmother was 14 when she got married, and 15 when my oldest aunt was married. Imagine that today? \:o

My mom never really got over my grandfather's death. She was always closer to him then her mom. I'm thinking my grandfather was probably a little older then that, because I believe he was a few years older then my grandmother. We don't talk about that much with my mom because it depresses her so. My grandfather died two days before my mom's 1st grandchild was born. My oldest nephew was born on February 18, 1977. My grandfather died February 16, 1977.

Ya think?

My grandfather was a handsome man. No one ever quite lived up to him in my eyes.

Forgive my nerdy detailing here (but I love to reconstruct this type of stuff); if your grandfather was about 62 when he died in 1977 that means he was born about 1915. Your mom was born in 1935, so that means he was 20 when your mom was born. If he married at an early age thats certainly reasonable.

Did your mom have older siblings?

Boy, I feel like I'm talking to Paul.

My mom was the next to the oldest. Her older sister died in January 2000, my grandmother died in November 2000. Not sure how many more years older she was. I could ask my mom these questions, but I could ask 3 times and get 3 different answers.

OK... so he was probably born about 1915. I'll rethink my original guess and say that the picture was taken around 1945 (nearer the end of the war... if he didn't enlist he would have been among the last to be drafted since he had more than two kids).

Great topic SC. Now you have me searching frantically through my old family photos. I hope that I can find an old family photo that fits in the category of this topic.

This thread could be one of the best in a while, I think, if more people got involved (that's me secretly hoping Signor Vitelli's scanner works!)

I think the fun of this type of thread is that we all have ancestors who lived through the war period and many of them probably have had photos taken.

Since my scanner isn't working I'm gonna try to get some screen captures from old family movies. The style of clothing, for instance, is fun to see. As TIS said earlier, the 40's had a certain panache about them when it came to the clothes/styles.

SC,

By "screen captures" I assume you mean taking pictures from the movie screen? I think I'll try that as well. I mentioned a while back that I have a very short 8mm movie clip from 1940 of my parents' engagement party. I'd love to get some still shots of it if possible and download them. It's on VHS though and I don't have a working VCR. I'll check into it. \:\/

I'm sure this is beyond my comprehension, but isn't it possible to download short clips from home movies??? Boy, I'd love to be able to do that.

While I was talking to my mom talking about the picture she said the army didn't even realize until afterwards that my grandfather had 4 kids already at the time he was in the service. He eventually did get an honorable discharge. Now they couldn't care less. They need all the able bodies they can get.

TIS -

Without getting too technical, the easiest thing you can do is to transfer the videotape to a DVD. There are lots of programs that you can use to get a screen capture from a DVD.

I had some old movies transferred to videotape and I then transferred it a DVD disk.... the disk got damaged and now I can't find the VHS tape (from which to make another disk).

SC,

Funny you mention that. I was just looking for the nearest place to do that. \:\) I have my family's ( my husband/kids) on DVD, but my parents sent me a VHS a few years back of my childhood and of the film I mentioned above and I want that on DVD as well. Let me get that done and if there is a easier way to transfer from that point, I'll ask. If not, I'll still be happy to get it on DVD.

Btw, I still have the 8mm films that I had transferred. Don't know why, they're a pain in the ass to set up but I didn't have the heart to toss them. \:p

I jumped on llc for not sharing his own experiences???? You smoking those funny cigarettes again??

My scanner/pc setup is completely kerblooey now. The only photo I have on my pc that fits this category is one that I've posted already but I'll be glad to add it again.

This picture, from the summer of 1942, shows my mom and sister in some garden setting (possibly Prospect Park in Brooklyn). Michael Corleone was off fighting in the war (the U.S. had entered WWII some seven or eight months earlier); my father had not been drafted at this point (by virtue of being a father he had a deferment until 1944) but I had two uncles who were serving then - one in the Pacific theater and one in Europe. This picture was taken at the same time the Germans were beginning their offensive against the Russians in Stalingrad and the battle of Midway was being fought in the Pacific. I've often thought that this picture, taken in such a serene setting, totally belies the horror of the times with the world at war.

Notice the "puffy" sleeves on my mother's dress and the hairstyle - very Andrews Sisters like (they were one of the big music groups popular at the time - you can see them in some of the early Abbott & Costello movies):

You're right about the date and placed of that picture, SC. I know, because I took it.

From Turnbull:

SUMMER 1945:
In Long Beach, Long Island, Connie Corleone was marrying Carlo Rizzi...outside in the garden, Michael Corleone was explaining to Kay Adams why he'd never join the family business...Luca Brazi was practicing his elocution nearby...inside, Vito Corleone was giving lessons in ethics and values to Amerigo Bonasera...Sonny Corleone was taking his leisure with Lucy Mancini...
Meanwhile, 20 miles to the west in Brooklyn, young Turnbull was modeling the first of many hats he'd wear in his career as Godfather savant and general pain-in-the-neck. His modeling "runway" was under the I.R.T. El tracks at Elton Street and New Lots Avenue in the East New York section. His mother, seen in the distance, was looking out for rival junior gangsters who had been threatening to cut short his sartorial career with a burst or two from a watergun...

Thats an awesome picture, TB. Looking sharp!!
