Is Superbad one of the 250 best films of all time? No. Is it simply a "dick joke" movie? Absolutely not. There is plenty of whit and cleverness behind it, and anyone who has experienced public high school--actually, anyone who doesn't share a heart with Satan and has an ounce of humor in their body--can enjoy it. Most American comedies are absolute shit, and throw around dumb fart jokes and follow it up with little intelligence. But immaturity isn't necessarily a bad thing--immaturity can be a great thing if accompanied by clever satire and intelligence... And Superbad had all of those things.

But then again, is The Godfather one of the five best films of all time? Probably not. It may be one of your favorite films of all time, but on a massive grading scale of every film ever made, it's lucky to be in the top 20.

Great defense of Superbad but it just didn't appeal to me. I'll probably see it again soon anyways, so we'll see.. \:\)

Yeah, I mean, I'm sure to some extent it is clearly a generational thing, but I think it's at least enjoyable to most who have been through high school.

But, as far as I'm concerned, there are great dramas and then there are great comedies... And there's a quite pronounced line separating the two.

If it was at 19, though, that is way higher than it should have ever been. IMDB, I think, is geared more towards fan favorites and general appeal than it would care to admit.

"Somebody told me when the bomb hits, everybody in a two mile radius will be instantly sublimated, but if you lay face down on the ground for some time, avoiding the residual ripples of heat, you might survive, permanently fucked up and twisted like you're always underwater refracted. But if you do go gas, there's nothing you can do if the air that was once you is mingled and mashed with the kicked up molecules of the enemy's former body. Big-kid-tested, motherf--ker approved."

It's deserving of its critical acclaim and praise. Sure, like anything great, it does get overrated on occasion and cultural saturation has maybe cheapened the film in some eyes. But, it's so good that it's not a stretch for it to be in a top 20.

Take a look at the elements that contribute to a movie as a whole:

Cinematography: Gordon Willis' cinematography was a revelation for cinematographers. Even as a 14-year old who had no idea of what cinematography was or what DPs did, I still found the darkness fascinating (e.g., The Don @ Bonasera's looking over Sonny's corpse; the darkness in the Corleone home).

Acting: One of the greatest ensembles one will ever come across.

Music: One of the most memorable scores ever.

Screenwriting: A shining example of classical narrative. Cause-and-effect chain. Complications. Suspense. Surprise. Climax build-up. Etcetera.

Editing: Notable classical editing. Classic montage sequences. Classic cross-cutting in the opening wedding sequence which is one of the finest opening sequences to a movie ever.

Directing: Coppola guided the fantastic performances. His attention to detail crafted a believable story world. As overseer of all elements, that were by themselves fantastic, and making them into a cohesive whole.

I mean all those elements are of the highest order.

It's definitely not a stretch for the movie to be in a top 20.

The Godfather part 2 is quite easily the best film out of those 10.
