Machete update!

Some time before GRINDHOUSE apparently had the box office drawing power of a steamer left on the theater floor, there were reports that director Robert Rodriguez was planning a straight-to-DVD spinoff featuring MACHETE, one of the faux trailers during the double feature. Is a solo MACHETE still in the cards?

It is if everyone's favorite Hollywood hunk Danny Trejo has anything to say about it! And he does: the regular Rodriguez collaborator says it's "definite", and that it may even happen before SIN CITY 2 (in which Trejo will have an as yet unknown role). Rodriguez has apparently shot as much as one-third of the movie already.

Awesome! That was the best of the trailers and I would love to see that made into an entire movie!

My 2 favorite trailers were WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE SS and THANKSGIVING. I'd rather see them made into movies first.

Grindhouse 2 talk

Bloody Disgusting caught up with the infamous Babysitter Twins (Electra and Elise Avellan), who spilled a couple of beans about the sequel:

"Robert [Rodriguez] said he’d do it [Machete] and asked for us to be in it... Robert wants to do GRINDHOUSE 2 with [the two films being] "Machete" and "The Babysitter Twins... Robert mentioned something about the end of the world and Hollywood action films, where we’d be trained in Mexico to come back here and fight... Hollywood starts f*cking with us so we start killing… we [would] kill Harvey Weinstein in the movie, although that’s just talk now right."

Source: JoBlo

----------------------------------------------------------------

That's the first I've heard of a BABYSITTER TWINS movie (I much prefer WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE SS or THANKSGIVING). But if it gets GRINDHOUSE 2 made and in theaters, then I'm all for it! What do you think Blibble?

Irish, I read in Sight & Sound that Tarantino was in talks for back-to-back Kill Bill 3 and 4 sequels. Watch this space (perhaps rrA knows something about that too?)...

I had heard about a KILL BILL VOLUME 3 but it wasn't going to take place until 15 years after VOLUME 2, dealing with Vernita Green's daughter seeking revenge on the Bride.

This is the first I've heard of either movie. A Grindhouse sequel, or a Kill Bill Sequel. I'll be first in line for both!

As far as Grindhouse 2, I don't care what the second movie is as long as one of them is Machete.

Was there any word of Tarantino working with Rodriguez again? If it's just Rodriguez doing both movies then I'm a little hesitant to see it in the theater. But both of them together again would be great.

I wondered the exact same thing while reading that. They didn't mention him and I also know he has many planned projects (INGLORIOUS B*STARDS, THE VEGA BROTHERS movie, KILL BILL anime prequel, etc.). I think after SIN CITY 2, Robert will do this but unfortunately, not Quentin IMO \:\(

However, on a related not I did order this DVD Blibble and I just received it yesterday:

Apparently these are all of the films shown at the 2007 Los Angeles Grindhouse Festival (with some of the films selected by QT himself).

Looks like I might be buying the GRINDHOUSE DVD's in September

----------------------------------------------------------------

SDCC: Grindhouse Gets Cut in Two

July 26, 2007 - The Weinstein Company and Genius Products announced today that the two films that made up the classically under-rated Grindhouse release will hit DVD on two separate, extended and unrated DVDs.

Quentin Tarantino's serial-killer homage to the old school car chase film, DEATH PROOF will hit shelves with over 30 minutes of additional, never-before-seen footage including the maddening "missing reel" (containing the excised lapdance sequence) as well as a black and white segment in the film's second act. The DVD will hit on September 18, 2007 for a price of $29.95. Features will include:

-Finding Quentin's Gals

-The Guys of Death Proof

-Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike

-Introducing Zoe Bell

-Quentin's Greatest Collaborator: Editor Sally Menke

-Double Dare trailer

-International Poster Gallery

Meanwhile, the Robert Rodriguez zombie entry, PLANET TERROR, will attack with more footage, deleted scenes, a full commentary and the infamous missing reel. That disc will drop on October 16, 2007 for a price of $29.95 and its features will include:

-Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Robert Rodriguez

-International trailer

-Deleted Scenes

-Cooking School

-10-Minute Film School

-The Stunts

-The Make-up and Effects

-The Badass Babes

-The Renegade Guys

-The Costumes

-The Production Design

Stayed tuned to IGN DVD for more info on these exciting releases.

BOOOOO!!!! NO! It needs to be released as it was in theaters. That was the whole fun of the experience. The double feature with all the previews...

This splitting them up is retarded. I won't buy them unless they are released in the original format, with the reels missing and everything.

I think a homage to Grindhouse films should bomb, financially. That's the entire point of it. \:\)

The Weinsteins should be fucked over though. Sorry, I meant, erm, fed a plate of poo.

Haha, that's a good point Capo. An homage to the grindhouse era proving successful wouldn't really be much of an homage. If they make a Grindhouse 2, let the plates of poo be plentiful.

Yeah, I'm wondering what'll happen to the trailers as well. Who knows, maybe they'll release a special edition later on down the line. Hey, they gotta make their money back, right? ;\)

Sorry Blibble, but it looks like the fake trailers will not be apart of the initial DVD releases. Oh well, I'll probably buy both editions anyways.

----------------------------------------------------------------

And for those interested, Quentin had this to say about his next film (hopefully) INGLORIOUS B*STARDS:

"If I speak about it, I will jinx it. I will talk about it when it is done," the cult film director said.

"It is sort of a spaghetti western set in World War 2. I am not going to call it this, but if I had a subtitle for it, it would be 'Once Upon a Time in Nazi-occupied France'."

Is A Don't Movie Due?

August 1, 2007 - Edgar Wright, director of the Grindhouse trailer for Don't, said that he might be interested in fleshing out the teaser to feature length. "It has been mentioned a couple of times," Wright said. "It would depend on how Grindhouse does on DVD, because I would be very surprised if it [didn't do well]. Obviously it's already got kind of like a great cult reputation."

Wright said he thinks the Rodriguez/Tarantino movie was a great film that turned off audiences primarily because of its running time. "I think what happened with Grindhouse is that it really separated movie fans from moviegoers," he said. "The movie geeks and people who are here [at Comic-Con] were the people who were first in line, and then there are moviegoers who turn up to the multiplex not knowing what they're going to see, and working out if they can see Blades of Glory for 90 minutes before they go to dinner.

"So Grindhouse, which was three and a half hours, is a much bigger commitment," Wright continued. "I think that's basically maybe why it didn't do as well as everybody was hoping, but I don't think that actually reflects on the quality of the film."

Where Are the Grindhouse Trailers Going?

August 1, 2007 - On Friday, July 27, 2007, Edgar Wright announced that his trailer for Don't which was created for the Robert Rodriguez/ Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse, will not be available on the forthcoming individual DVDs for either film. "I think that the trailers won't turn up until they release Grindhouse as a double disc set," Wright said during a press conference for the DVD release of Hot Fuzz. "They're releasing the films separately and then there will be a "Grindhouse Edition" later and that's what the trailers will appear on. I was sad that they won't get shown in other territories in the world, so that's a bit of a shame, but that's what's going to happen."

When asked if he recorded a commentary track for the trailer, Wright said he expects that will happen closer to the release of the special edition. "When they do the box set we'll hopefully do some extra stuff to go with it," Wright said. (Currently there is no formal announcement or release date for a Grindhouse special edition.) He continued, "I had a blast doing that, actually, it was such fun. That trailer was shot five weeks before the film came out, so it was right in the middle of our press tour [for Hot Fuzz], but it's on the DVD. Literally, just before that documentary starts is when I shot Don't, so I really enjoyed doing it."

TARANTINO REJECTS PALTROW FOR FUTURE ROLES

PULP FICTION director QUENTIN TARANTINO has refused to consider GWYNETH PALTROW for a role in his future films because she is not "trampy" enough. The cult moviemaker admits he is desperate to make a "women-in-prison" or "cheerleader" picture as his next movie, but isn't keen on the 34-year-old Shakespeare In Love actress' talents. He says, "I'm not casting someone like her. "It would be a trampy type who'd let the cameras roll yelling 'Here we go' "

Haha, I wonder why he even brought up her name? Has there been talk of her being in one of his movies? Or did he just randomly single out Paltrow to publicly say he wouldn't hire her, just for fun?

I think someone might have asked if he'd ever work with Gwyneth Paltrow and these were his comments. I'm not 100% but a QT women's prison movie. Like I'm not gonna see it \:D

I saw these in the last month. All of them border on porn.

A Prisão (Bare behind bars) (1980) (zero stars)
The invisible maniac (1990) (zero stars)
Immagini di un convento (Images in a convent) (1979) *
Seijû gakuen (School of the Holy Beast) (1974) (zero stars)

If anyone is interested ask me and I'll post more thoughts on these.

Thanks Irish. I don't seem to rewatch any movie, so I never buy any DVD. Not grindhouse movies, any movie in general. Someday I intend to have the DVDs of my top 20 or so movies.

I'm going to resist as long as possible (probably until wednesday ) to find out if they will release both movies together as they were in the theater.

I don't think you'll hear an answer until later this year (well after BOTH DVD releases). If you want my honest opinion and want both films back-to-back, then I would say wait. I've heard whispers of it being re-released next year with the trailers. Personally, I can't wait until Tuesday but if it's not for you, again, wait til next year man

I remember you saying something about the individual releases would be cut different, without the missing reel gag. Is that still true? Or was it just rumors?

EDIT: when you get it please us your review of the Death Proof dvd.

No the DEATH PROOF release this month and PLANET TERROR release next month will have additional footage added to it. All of those missing reels will be replaced (including Vanessa Ferlito's lapdance sequence). I've heard DEATH PROOF could be up to 30 minutes longer, not sure about PLANET TERROR but these 2 will be the extended cuts. What I was telling you to hold on for was the GRINDHOUSE release next year. Basically I think that DVD will be the theaterical cuts (with the missing reels) and the trailers between the films. Not sure about special features though if any.

You got it my man. I'm going to be at Best Buy at 10am and will probably come promptly home to watch the movie. After that, I'll try to get through the special features within the next couple of days. So hopefully in about a week I'll have it all done. Although I must warn you, I've never done a DVD review before.

Ask and thou shall receive Blibble. Obviously this isn't my review of the DVD but here's something for you to read over the weekend:

Death Proof DVD

BTW, the 2nd photo of Rosario Dawson standing in front of a gas station in black and white, yeah, that gas station is about 10-15 minutes from my house \:o I didn't know QT was shooting there until after the fact

As promised. Remember this is my first DVD review, so please, be gentle

DEATH PROOF
(Third Viewing)

Two separate pairs of voluptuous women are stalked at different times by a scarred stuntman who uses his "death proof" cars to execute his murderous plans.

I've been salivating to see this film again. I loved GRINDHOUSE so much I saw it twice in theaters and DEATH PROOF was my favorite. As usual, Quentin can take the "everybody loves Kurt Russell" who we're all familiar with, turn him into a psychopatic manic behind the wheel of the car, turn him into a complete wuss, and still have him loveable as a villain. I loved the opening and closing songs for the film, however this was one of the few were all of the music didn't blow me away. The added footage filled in some of the gaps from the theaterical cut but didn't add anything of major significance. Finally, Quentin Tarantino's back and all's right in the world.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Disc 1
1) International DEATH PROOF Trailer
-Since the overseas versions of DEATH PROOF were the extended cut, the trailers naturally had the extended shots (not seen in the U.S.) in them. Other than that, not much of a difference to get one pumped up to see this film.

2) International Posters
-DEATH PROOF posters from around the world.

3) Additional Trailers
-PLANET TERROR (same international cut trailer)
-1408
-BLACK SHEEP
-FEAST

Disc 2
1) Stunts on Wheels: The Legendary Drivers of Death Proof (20:39)
-Featurette focuses on stunt drivers Buddy Joe Hooker and Tracy Dashnaw who drive the cars in the chase scene between Kurt Russell and Zoe Bell & crew. A great look at the people behind the scenes who risk life and limb and receive little credit/spotlight.

2) Introducing Zoe Bell (8:59)
-Featurette talks about stunt double turned actress Zoe Bell's breakthrough role and her relationship with Quentin stemming back from the KILL BILL films.

3) Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike (9:34)
-According to QT 3 others were considered for the role but unfortunately, no names are ever given. Russell speaks highly of Quentin and says from all the director's he's ever worked with, QT is his favorite.

4) Finding Quentin's Gals (21:14)
-Apparenly Quentin wrote the role of Arlene specifically for Vanessa Verlito and actually had to convince her it was designed for her and her alone. He could have either wrote the role and had someone audition, or wrote the role specifically for Vanessa but Vanessa HAD to play it. Also wrote the role of Lee for Mary Elizabeth Winstead after casting her. He casted her first and based on her personality and the direction of her character, he worked her character to fit within that framework (which is very unusual for Quentin). He always writes the characters first and actors audition for the role, not the other way around.

5) The Uncut Version of 'Baby, It's You' Performed by Mary Elizabeth Winstead (1:48)
-A scene that was cut from the American theaterical cut that is restored in the extended version. This is the entire song sung by her uncut.

6) The Guys of Death Proof (8:16)
-Featurette briefly skims over the characters played by Michael Parks, Eli Roth, Omar Doom, and Michael Bacall.

7) Quentin's Greatest Collaborator: Editor Sally Menke (4:38)
-QT and Sally edited the entire film in only 4 1/2 weeks, which was less time than the editing for RESERVOIR DOGS. Mainly this featurette is the cast saying 'hello Sally' into the camera when beginning scenes in new locations. Pretty funny stuff at times.

8) DOUBLE DARE Trailer

Disc 3 - BEST BUY EXCLUSIVE (24:15)
-QT and Robert Rodriguez give a brief but great insight into the history of grindhouse films and why many of them are so over the top (to attract audiences from typical studio films)
-Babe's of GRINDHOUSE (talks about the babe's in both films)
-Renegade Guys of GRINDHOUSE (talks about the dude's in both films)
-Hot Rods of GRINDHOUSE (talks about the cars in DEATH PROOF)
-Trailers at GRINDHOUSE (talks about the different directors and their fake trailers)

Overall, the special features (minus the Best Buy exclusive) have a runtime a little over an hour. The feature's were entertaining, however were somewhat short. I also would have liked to have seen featurettes on the filming locations in Austin and California. Also, I was hoping for a featurette solely on the cars of DEATH PROOF yet their wasn't one. The Best Buy exclusive disc barely touches on the subject for a couple of minutes, but nothing in depth or with much substance.
