I didn't really get Mean Streets either. It moved so slowly, like real life. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe it's a bad thing.

Long as I remember The rain been coming down.
Clouds of Mystery pouring Confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages, Trying to find the sun;
And I wonder, Still I wonder, Who'll stop the rain.

That's understandable. I know some people here have said it was better than RAGING BULL and GOODFELLAS. They hail it as Scorsese's best film. As you can tell, I'm not a subscriber to that point of view.

Just watch this scene with an open mind. The dialogue between DeNiro, Keitel and Proval alone, is worth the price of the dvd. \:\)

It's good. I finally appreciated it more the third time around, but it is not Scorsese's best work and is not in the realm of GOODFELLAS, RAGING BULL, TAXI DRIVER, CASINO, or THE DEPARTED which are his best films IMO.

It's less polished, narratively; it's more experimental, more improvised, more closer to home. Its mastery is in its evocation of time and place - soundtrack, mise en scene, acting. It's as aesthetically innovative as all the films you mention, Irish.

Casino is two hours exposition and one hour wrap-up - and very effective as such, but hardly worth pushing up against his others; The Departed is an exciting and solid but relatively tame remake in comparison to the vicious and humane Mean Streets.

I'd rank his top five thus:

1. Taxi Driver
2. GoodFellas
3. Mean Streets
4. Raging Bull
5. King of Comedy

And the only other of his works which might be as excellent as those is Cape Fear. Most of his others are great-not-masterpiece efforts.

BTW...EVERYONE needs to watch House. Best show on television. I don't know how many times I must say this.

Amazing!

I just picked up two of the three, but I cheaped out and bought the "regular" KNOCKED UP. I also picked up THE BRONX IS BURNING.

I'll tell you, DVD's have become so readily available, I end up buying 9 out of 10 at the supermarket. They're always right there by the registers. Hey, it keeps me away from The Enquirer.

I've gotta return my THE BRONX IS BURNING next Tuesday. This never happens to me but apparently in December it's going to be re-released as a 5-disc World Series edition. I'm waiting on that so I'll just return it for the FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER next Tuesday.

I have just bought this and watched it

The All Together

Martin Freeman plays Chris, a frustrated TV producer who is forced to leave his unreliable flatmate Bob played by Velibor Topic in charge of showing a series of real estate agents around the house he is trying to sell. Worried by Bob's habit of spending all day working in the basement playing loud music, Chris asks his friend to listen out for the door bell and show anyone who comes calling inside. Bob promises to do exactly that and for once, not to let him down. Over the course of the day, whilst Chris struggles to cope with his insane TV presenter colleague Jerry, played by Richard Harrington - back at the house it is soon clear that bonkers Bob is taking his promise to Chris rather too literally. Bob has indeed, allowed anyone inside, including a couple of gun-toting gangsters - an incompetent young Brit played by Danny Dyer and an incontinent American played by Corey Johnson. That evening, Chris is surprised to return home and find his flatmate, four estate agents, two Jehovah's Witnesses, a corpse and a terrified children's entertainer in what remains of his flooded kitchen. Of course, a roomful of water and broken furniture doesn't mean the end of the world - but the half-crazed American sitting outside the toilet with a gun, just might
