You would have loved the story in our local paper. A local Chinese restaurant had an unusual way to crush their garlic. An employee would put it in a big tub and then stomp on it, shoes and all. Well, one employee decided to do it outside the back door of the restaurant. The guy who worked at the AT&T store next to the restaurant took some photos of it, and sent them to the newspaper.

Not only that, he sent the photo to the local Health Department, who promptly investigated.

The photos were also sent to all the local TV stations, and the story was featured on all their newscasts. Reporters were dispatched to the restaurant, looking for a statement. What they usually got was a screaming manager attempting to order them away from the front of the restaurant (which is public property). They said that the garlic-stomping employee no longer works there.

According to the fellow who first took the pictures, this was not a one-time incident; it had been going on for awhile.

Click here to see the story, literally "ripped" from our local Fox TV News.

SV, I had no idea it had made TV. That's pretty funny. We used to eat there when the place first opened, but stopped going several years ago. It was rather obvious that the quality had dropped off.

Thanks for the link!

I'm getting ready to make some pico de gallo. Forget the stuff you can buy at the store. Sure, you'll end up paying much more buying all the fresh produce to make it, but it's worth it.

I'll eventually post the recipe I use. It's pretty basic, really. But it's awesome.

Rodent Head Found In Green Beans

A rodent head found by a Lehi woman in a can of green beans would be safe to eat, the company's spokesman said Thursday. But Marianne Watson, the woman who found the head in the can bought from a Wal-Mart store, rejected a $100 settlement that Allen Canning offered her if she signed a liability release.
"There's no way that product could have hurt her," Allen Canning spokesman James Phillips said in a telephone interview. "This rodent was rendered commercially sterile. We cook each can individually at a temperature up to 265 degrees."
Even so, Phillips said the rat head wouldn't be welcome at his home. "I'd hate to even think about seeing the same thing on my kitchen table."
Watson bought the can from the American Fork Wal-Mart store on Sept. 28. On Sunday, when she opened the can to prepare lunch for her family, she found the rodent head.
The Arkansas-based company called the check it sent Watson a "gesture of good will," but assured her that it was not an admission of liability.
"It's a $100 bribe," Watson said. "It's insulting, and I felt they were disingenuous. I feel like they're asking me to view them as good farmers, but they're just protecting their tails."
Phillips says that Watson isn't the victim, though.
"You can be assured that the people who've been hurt by this is us. She's trying to ruin
us through the media."
Watson said that she still will not pursue legal action.
In a letter to Watson, the company asked that she send the head to a lab to be tested. Watson says she may send it to a lab, but not the one recommended by the company.
Phillips says that the incident is rare and that the company produces millions of cans a year.
"If you would calculate the frequency of this on a calculator, it wouldn't fit because the number's so small," said Phillips.
Still, the case is not the first time a complaint about animal parts in Allen's green beans has been made public. In 2005, The Northwest Herald in McHenry County, Ill., reported that a woman found an amphibian leg in a can of Allen's green beans. Brenda Eisenberg of Spring Grove found the leg in November 2005. Allen's offered her $25, a gift pack and a cookbook.
Watson says she made the incident public to prevent others experiencing the same thing. She advises those who have purchased Allen's green beans to check the label for the tainted batch number: 34CG262162.
Allen's regrets that the incident happened.
"Were we disappointed? Absolutely. Do we want these things to happen? Absolutely not. But when they do happen, we try to respond," said Phillips.

I stay away from ALL canned veggies (except corn and sometimes peas -- not cuz of potential rodent parts, but because they normally suck! They're not veggies anymore, they're watered down slimy nutritionally-vacant disgusting 5th-cousins of the vegetables they're supposed to represent.

If you cannot get fresh, at least get frozen. Frozen veggies are just fine (except for frozen spinach and other greens which are horrid, too).

I just found out today that pasta is Chinese, pizza is Greek (though Margherita is Italian), sushi is French, fish and chips is Jewish and all sorts of other unsettling historical facts.

Hey Mick, you ever watch Jamie Oliver?

I ask for a reason. Last year, Jamie wrote Jamie's Italy, which was regarded as the BEST Italian cookbook of 2006 in many circles. It's kind of relative to your point; here's Jamie, an Englishman, getting 5 stars for writing an Italian cookbook. Constructed habit; that's a good way to put it. ;\)

Jamie Oliver is repulsive. If his ideas are not too big for his head, his tongue is too big for his mouth.

Jokes about speech impediments aside, I don't really mind him, though a lot of people don't like him.

I suspect, much like Sean Connery, Jamie's more popular here in the US than he is in the UK??

As with a lot of English exports, yeah, I guess.

(Though I must concede that I'm the only person I know who finds Connery's acting intolerable.)

I'm fucking starving. But I'm to wait: my housemate's birthday party tonight, and we're cooking sweet and sour chicken. What I would do right now for a plate of baby's guts.

That reminds of another question my brother asked us at the table one day (he loves to provoke discussion). We were talking about the movie Alive, about the South American soccer players who had survived a plane crash in the Andes by resorting to cannibalism. I asked how many could do it if they were in the same situation.

My brother took the question one step further and asked if there was anyone that they would find too repulsive to eat. Interesting question.
