Now, my grandmother and mother fried small pieces (they weren't balls because I don't think they had a regular shape) of pizza dough, but we would put powdered sugar on them. We called them pizza fritta. We never had them as anything but dessert.

And then there are the other fried dough balls that you put honey and sprinkles on. My one grandmother called them struffoli, but the other called them something else, but I can't remember what.
