I replaced my furnace in December of 2005 (at the considerable cost of $5,000). Last night, the kids were complaining that they were cold and accused me of being cheap with the heat. I told them it was set to 72 and to stop whining. However, upon inspection of the thermostat, we realized it was only 64 in the house. Turns out the furnace was NOT turning on. I'm now stuck in the house and I'm freezing.

Time to dig out the thermal undies. I am cold myself.

I broke down and turned my furnace on today for the first time this season. When my cat's whisker's started sprouting icicles I guess I figured it was time.

I am cheap when it comes to the heat.

We've been cheap when it comes to heat this winter. I'd rather wear more clothes than pay outrageous prices for heat so I can buy more clothes to wear to keep warm instead of paying outrageous prices for heat and so on...

I've had mine on and off for a couple weeks now. And it probably won't be turned off till next spring.

I wish the rest of the leaves would hurry up and fall.

I wear more layers this time of year to help save on the gas bill and I hate it.

We invested in those programmable thermostats. It saves a lot of money, because we put the heat way down during the night and raise it about 40 minutes before waking. It's only painful if you have to pee during the night!!

I hate sitting on a cold toilet seat first thing in the morning.

That's why we programmed the thermostat to turn on BEFORE we get up in the morning.

What do you set the thermostat at night?

Downstairs is 62, upstairs 64, starting at 11:30. At 5:30, the upstairs goes up, and at 6:00 the downstairs goes up.

The Furnace Man just left. $313 to bypass the damper. If I replace the damper, it will cost $500 for the part alone. The damper adds to the efficiency of the unit. He says it saves $3-$5 per YEAR. I told him we could live without it.
