Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly expressed an interest in becoming the new England manager.
Mourinho, who left Chelsea in September, said he would be prepared to talk to the Football Association.

"You will have to speak to the FA to see if they are interested in offering me the job," he told the Sun newspaper.

"I cannot say what I think until they say they are interested. Tell the FA to come and get me. We will have to wait and see, but I rule nothing out."

Mourinho would be a popular choice to replace Steve McClaren at the helm with England because of his hugely impressive record with Chelsea and Porto.

He won two Portuguese championships, the Uefa Cup and the Champions League with Porto, before leaving to win two Premier League titles, two League Cups and the FA Cup with the Blues.

The 44-year-old had been tipped to stay in club management in Europe, having previously suggested that he would only be interested in coaching his native Portugal at international level.

606: DEBATE
Is Mourinho the right man for England?

FA chief executive Brian Barwick has said that nationality "would not be an issue" when it came to appointing the next England coach.

England, who have dropped down to the second pot of seeds in qualification for the major tournaments, avoided Portugal in Sunday's draw for the World Cup.

Barwick will lead the FA's search for a new coach after they missed out on a place at Euro 2008, alongside the organisation's development director Sir Trevor Brooking.

The FA has already had to listen to several potential candidates rule themselves out of contention for the position with Aston Villa's Martin O'Neill, West Ham's Alan Curbishley and Newcastle's Sam Allardyce all distancing themselves from speculation.

Hmmm interesting

Birmingham City presented Alex McLeish as manager on Wednesday then cast doubt on the likelihood of Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung taking control of the Premier League club.

McLeish, 48, resigned as Scotland coach on Tuesday after narrowly missing out on leading the country to next year's European championship finals.

He replaces Steve Bruce who has moved to rivals Wigan Athletic.

"I always had the desire to come to the Premiership and I'd love to be managing in the Premiership for a considerable time," said McLeish, who signed a 3-1/2-year deal.

Birmingham chairman David Gold told the news conference the takeover board had not allowed the club to offer Bruce an improved deal but there had been no obstacle to offering a new contract to a new manager.

"It is a bit unusual and surprised us," he said, casting doubt on the ability of Yeung, the club's biggest shareholder with a 30 percent stake, to take control by a Dec. 20 deadline.

"I started off believing that the takeover bid was 90 percent assured," he said. "A couple of weeks ago I reduced that down to 75 percent.

"I now believe it is below 50 percent, but only time will tell. What it really says is that the board must actually take charge of the football club fully, we must act as if this takeover doesn't happen.

"We are assuming now and working on the basis that the deal will not go ahead."

McLeish, a former Aberdeen defender and Rangers manager, can look forward to renewing battle with former Celtic boss Martin O'Neill, in charge at local rivals Aston Villa.

McLeish can also expect to at least double the salary Scotland were paying him, according to British newspaper reports.

An upbeat Paul Jewell today insisted that he could keep Derby County in the Premier League after being unveiled as the club's new manager. Jewell, who has agreed a 3½-year contract worth around £1.5m a year, admits he faces a "very difficult" challenge, but reckons that with Derby just four points off 17th position they have every chance to stay up.
When asked if the Rams had the squad to survive in the Premier League, Jewell was confident and direct. "Absolutely," he said. "If I don't believe it, if the players don't believe it, if the fans don't believe it, we have no chance. It's going to be very difficult but I'm not here to wave the white flag. We're not adrift

Jewell, who resigned as Wigan's manager in May after keeping them in the Premier League, says he has become a better manager in his six months away from the game. "I've taken time out of football to reflect on how I can get better," he said. "That time has not just been spent playing golf, I've done a lot of travelling and watched a lot of football.
"Every challenge is a big challenge - be it Bradford, Sheffield Wednesday or Wigan but this one really excites me. There is a lot of history in this football club but the history doesn't count for a lot these days. But I think we can move the club forward. I'm here for the long term to try and get the club strong and upward and in the right direction."

Jewell also surprised journalists at today's press conference by insisting that he had never had any contact with the Derby chairman, Adam Pearson, before a phone call yesterday. He was less specific, however, when asked about whether he would have any money to spend in the January transfer window.

"People always ask about money but we want to move forward, there will be money available if and when we want to strengthen," said Jewell. "People talk about the January window but you have to be careful about who you bring in. I've watched a lot of matches and there's players I'd like to bring in if and when it is possible. Let January look after itself, we're looking now to Sunderland [on Saturday]."

Jewell claimed the current crop of Derby players, who have only won six points from their opening 14 Premier League matches, would be given a chance to prove themselves. "You are starting with a clean piece of paper and it's up to you to prove you are good enough to be in the team," he told them. "As long as players give me 100% there won't be a problem."

For now, however, Jewell will have to wait to meet his new squad, who have the day off today.

Naughty Harry

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has said he was "bitterly disappointed" at the way police have handled an inquiry into alleged corruption in football.
He was "deeply upset" that his home was raided at 0600 with press photographers in tow, when the allegations had "nothing whatsoever to do with me".

Mr Redknapp, 60, was one of five men arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and false accounting.

Among those arrested were Portsmouth's former chairman Milan Mandaric.

'Entirely different'

Mr Redknapp told a press conference that his wife had been "petrified" during the raid, which took place while he was away from home at a Champions League match in Germany.

I add a bit of a profile to the investigation

Harry Redknapp

He added that he was at a loss to explain why he had been treated in this manner as he did not believe that the matters being investigated concerned him.

The Portsmouth manager said: "I still feel I was only called in because I have a high profile. I add a bit of a profile to the investigation."

He added that he had called in his players for a meeting, and been "completely open" with them about the allegations.

He said his family were "deeply heartbroken by the situation".

He said: "It was a bitter disappointment for me and my family. We were deeply heartbroken by the situation."

And Mr Redknapp asked "why it had to be brought into the public domain when I wasn't involved in any part of it".

Another of those who were held is understood to be Charlton player and Senegalese international Amdy Faye, currently on loan to Rangers.

The City of London Police inquiry is believed to be centred on the transfer of Mr Faye to Portsmouth from the French club Auxerre, and from Portsmouth to Newcastle, deals set up by agent Willie McKay.

Paul Martin, the solicitor representing Mr Redknapp and Mr Storrie, said the inquiries did not relate to either of them. "They relate to entirely different individuals."

A spokesman for Mr Mandaric, 69, said the Leicester City chairman would "continue to offer his full and total support to the police".

Police said the arrested men were aged 69, 60, 55, 48 and 30 and had been questioned over conspiracy to defraud and false accounting.

The 69-year-old was also held on suspicion of money laundering, a spokesman said

Detectives from the economic crime unit of the City of London Police are investigating allegations of corruption within football and its impact on owners and shareholders.

In July, officers raided Newcastle United, Portsmouth and Rangers football clubs as part of the inquiry.

A spokesman for Portsmouth said on Wednesday the club's chief executive and manager had "been asked to help police with their inquiries concerning a matter dating back to 2003" prior to the new owner taking control of the club in 2006.

He added the club was "fully supportive of Peter and Harry".

Rangers FC have confirmed that a player was arrested in a matter "totally unrelated" to the club.

The latest arrests bring the total number of people detained in connection with the investigation to seven.

In September, a 28-year-old man was arrested in London and in May, a 61-year-old man was arrested in Manchester on suspicion of money laundering.

A separate inquiry conducted last year by former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lord Stevens highlighted concerns over 17 player transfers and five Premier League clubs.

Football Association chief Brian Barwick will consult a host of leading figures in the game in his search for a "world-class manager" for England.
Barwick has canvassed the thoughts of England captain John Terry, Wales boss John Toshack, Uefa chief Michel Platini and German legend Franz Beckenbauer.

He will also consult Steven Gerrard, Arsene Wenger, Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Bobby Robson and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is the current favourite for the job.

Barwick is said to have told a meeting of FA directors on Thursday that he was determined to get a manager of world-class credentials.

He added that he was not working to a deadline - because England's next competitive match is months away, it was more important to get the best man for the job.

Barwick told the meeting that he and FA development director Sir Trevor Brooking would conduct a joint operation to appoint Steve McClaren's successor and would also seek the advice of former England managers Graham Taylor and Glenn Hoddle.

The FA insists no shortlist has yet been drawn up.

The biggest football job in Europe and in the world is to be the England manager

Sven-Goran Eriksson

Ex-England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, now in charge of Manchester City, said he could understand the clamour for Mourinho but warned he would be taking on "the biggest job in football".

"Mourinho has already shown that he is big with Porto and with Chelsea, so if he has been winning trophies for them, he can do it with England as well," said Eriksson.

"But to be the England manager you must win every game, not do anything in your private life and hopefully not earn too much money.

"They are the only qualities you need and if you have those, you are perfect.

"I don't want to say that I am supporting Mourinho because I support everyone and it is not my job. But the biggest football job in Europe and in the world is to be the England manager.

"The Champions League is big and it is fantastic, but to compare it to the World Cup? No chance. The World Cup is, and will be forever, the number one."

The insistence on a coach with pedigree appears to rule out former England striker Alan Shearer, who has no managerial experience, but brings into the equation heavyweights such as Martin O'Neill and Fabio Capello

Champions League set for revamp

Uefa is set to revamp the Champions League on Friday with the top three clubs in the Premier League qualifying for the group stages from 2009.
Under the plans, the fourth-placed side will now face a play-off against a team from another of Europe's leagues.

The Scottish champions will also go straight into the group stages but the runners-up face two qualifying rounds.

Previously in England, the top two sides qualified by right and the next two joined the third qualifying round.

It is likely the fourth-placed Premier League side will face a tougher play-off compared to playing in the third qualifying round of the Champions League against weaker opponents.

In Scotland, the champions have previously needed to come through a qualifying round.

Ha ha!
Now we are the most successful side ever in the Intertoto allegedly. They gave us a little, shiny tin pot trophy and everything
Thing with the Intertoto is that you have to start playing in June so by the time the proper season starts you are knackered(2 games a week and all that )and back to being crap again......
