Newcastle 1-1 Arsenal

Good result for Utd

Steven Taylor scored a second-half equaliser to ease the pressure on Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce.

Emmanuel Adebayor put leaders Arsenal in front with a brilliant volley after just four minutes but Taylor eventually equalised with a shot on the turn.

Geremi headed inches wide while Manuel Almunia blocked from Taylor as the home team played with great spirit.

Gilberto volleyed wide for Arsenal, who could have gone six points clear at the top of the Premier League.

It was Arsenal's game in hand and manager Arsene Wenger had highlighted the importance of extending their advantage over second place Manchester United.

606: DEBATE
How important is this point to Sam Allardyce?

But the Gunners, who remain unbeaten in the Premier League, failed to build on their early goal and Newcastle were worthy of their point after a match in which they played with great determination and endeavour.

The draw against the leaders will come as welcome respite for Allardyce, whose team had taken just one point from their previous five Premier League matches.

Allardyce's future has been in question in recent days, while rumours of player unrest continue to surround the club.

Yet although his team conceded early in the game the Magpies manager can have few complaints with the tenacity with which the Magpies started the match, nor the vociferous support from the home crowd.

Alan Smith slid in on Manuel Almunia while Joey Barton cleaned out Gilberto as the Magpies harried and harassed their opponents to try to nullify Arsenal's smooth passing play.

Newcastle trailed after Adebayor superbly controlled Emmanuel Eboue's cross with his chest before smashing the ball into the top corner of Shay Given's goal.

The goal came after Charles N'Zogbia gave away possession in a dangeorus area - but his team almost immediately equalised through Geremi's header from James Milner's cross.

And by the break Almunia had made a decent save from Geremi's low free-kick and brilliantly cleared Taylor's header from a corner.

In the first-half the home team needlessly gave away possession far too often against a team of Arsenal's quality, while right-back Habib Beye repeatedly drifted too far inside and offered too much space to Tomas Rosicky.

Adebayor (left) opened the scoring following Eboue's cross

Adebayor closed in on goal after an Arsenal break but a heavy touch saw the chance wasted, while a Rosicky corner fell to Gilberto at the far post but he volleyed wide.

But Newcastle continued to press and their 'up and at 'em' approach continued after the resumption, with N'Zogbia almost atoning for his earlier error with a vicious strike that Almunia saved.

And the home team's endeavour was rewarded when Taylor's low strike went in off the post.

Eduardo, as with Newcastle's N'Zogbia earlier in the match, gave the ball away in a dangerous position and, following Smith's flick on and Obafemi Martins step-over from Beye's cross, Taylor finished with his right foot.

Arsenal responded with the introduction of Nicklas Bendtner for Eduardo but the Gunners struggled to recapture the incisiveness that characterised their first-half play.

They enjoyed a period of pressure late in the contest but Newcastle could have taken all three points, with Mark Viduka shooting over and Eboue making a timely block to thwart Taylor.

Ferguson lauds 'special' Anderson

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed the talents of Brazilian midfielder Anderson and described him as "something special".
The 19-year-old has impressed during an extended run in the absence of the injured Paul Scholes.

"We've been delighted with him and he has proven himself to be a true central midfield player," said Ferguson.

"But he's got to prove his goal-scoring ability because that's something Scholesy has always given us."

Ferguson added: "There was an urgency to get him once we'd scouted him, even though he'd broken his leg and had been out for four or five months.

"The reports we were getting were saying that he was the best young player in the world. At the time I was saying, 'For God's sake, let's calm down a bit here.'

"I knew he had real potential, but I didn't want to put labels on him like that."

Anderson scored twice in 18 appearances for former side Porto, but has yet to find the net in eight appearances for the Red Devils.

FA 'makes approach' for Mourinho

The Football Association has contacted Jose Mourinho's agent about the former Chelsea boss taking over as England coach, BBC Sport understands.
Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes has been approached by the FA about the job, although reports that the Portuguese is already in London are wide of the mark.

It is thought the FA has drawn up a shortlist of five or six contenders.

Mourinho, 44, is on the list and he is considering whether he is prepared to meet FA bosses to talk about the job.

Some newspaper reports claimed Mourinho was either in London already or about to fly into England from Portugal for talks with the FA.

But BBC Sport football correspondent Jonathan Legard said he understood Mourinho was still at home in Portugal but that an approach had been made.

"My sources in Portugal told me that Mourinho has been approached about the England job through his agent," said Legard.

"He is said to be considering it, but it is not his first-choice opening. He still has very strong interest in what might develop at the top two Spanish clubs, particularly Real Madrid.

"I understand that the FA's consultation process is all but complete.

"Brian Barwick, the chief executive, and Trevor Brooking have taken their soundings from within the game and as a result we could know the identity of Steve McClaren's successor before Christmas."

The FA, meanwhile, has issued a forceful denial about one report that suggested Barwick and Brooking were at odds over the appointment.

It was claimed Brooking was pushing for West Ham boss Alan Curbishley to take over, while Barwick had set his sights on other "world class" candidates.

The FA's director of communications Adrian Bevington said: "There is no truth in any suggestion of a problem between Brian Barwick and Sir Trevor Brooking, or a conflict or difference of opinion of any sort in appointing the next England manager.

"It is totally without foundation. It is misleading to the public and grossly unfair on Brian and Sir Trevor, who are going about their work in a completely professional manner.

"This is not helpful at a time when we are doing all we can to ensure we get the right man and the best man for the England job, which is what the fans all want."

Barwick met Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on Thursday while Brooking spent time with Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson last weekend.

Reports suggest the FA's shortlist will include Mourinho, Fabio Capello, Martin O'Neill, Marcello Lippi and Jurgen Klinsmann.

Aston Villa boss O'Neill, who has twice attempted to rule himself out of the running, told The Times on Friday: "I think Jose would be an excellent choice, simple as that.

"An England manager should have the time (to put a good structure in place) because he doesn't have to organise a training session every morning.

Fabio Capello has said he would like to manage England

"It should be his business to get around and see how the structure operates, to see what is happening at clubs.

"But eventually it's about winning games at first-team level then hoping you can develop something that will stand the football club in great stead, or allow you to make a mark at international level over a period of time."

FA chairman Geoff Thompson said on Thursday: "We are determined to get the right man, at the right time.

"Brian Barwick has been charged with finding a manager to recommend to the FA board and is well under way with the process."

It appears likely that a successor for the recently-sacked Steve McClaren will be installed before the next international - the friendly against Switzerland on 6 February at Wembley
