BREAKING GOSSIP

Former Fulham manager Chris Coleman could be in line to be Kevin Keegan's number two at Newcastle (thisislondon.com, 0950 GMT).

Aston Villa have held talks with Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe (Birmingham Post, 0900 GMT).

Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenige says "the file is closed" on Manchester City's reported interest in German international striker Lukas Podolski (Goal.com, 0858 GMT).

Keep an eye on our gossip column during the day for updates and breaking rumours throughout the transfer window.

TRANSFER RUMOURS
Bolton could make a surprise move for Aston Villa's Olof Mellberg now they have money after selling Nicolas Anelka to Chelsea (Mirror).

Chelsea will ask Barcelona for Lionel Messi or AC Milan for Kaka if Didier Drogba decides to join either team in the summer (Mirror).

Fulham will make Kansas City Wizards striker Eddie Johnson the club's fifth American signing (Sun).

Tottenham have had no takers for Darren Bent, who they are prepared to sell at a loss despite having only signed him last summer (Independent).

Portsmouth have been told they can only sign Tottenham's Jermain Defoe on a permanent deal and there is no chance of a loan (Independent).

Birmingham are keen to sign Huddersfield goalkeeper Matt Glennon after he helped knock them out of the FA Cup third round (Mirror).

Manchester United are close to sealing a deal for 17-year-old identical twin defenders Fabio and Rafael Silva, who are both Brazilian youth internationals (Times).

Derby have rejected another bid from Maccabi Tel Aviv for American midfielder Benny Feilhaber (Telegraph).

Real Madrid say they will "just have to keep working" on their bid to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United (The Sun).

Sheffield United are keen to sign Ugo Ehiogu from Rangers as he has made just 12 appearances in the last year (Sun).

Nottingham Forest will make a third take-it-or-leave-it offer for Coventry's Leon Best (Star).

Spanish club Osasuna are to make an increased bid for Celtic's Evander Sno (The Sun)

OTHER GOSSIP
Reading are to introduce sniffer dogs looking for drugs as fans enter the Madjeski Stadium but insist it is preventative rather than because there is a problem (Mirror).

Liverpool's Jamie Carragher says he "hasn't got a clue" if he will ever win the Premier League title with the club (Independent).

Mark McGhee will talk with the Scottish Football Association about staying as Motherwell boss before becoming Scotland manager at the end of the season (Guardian).

AND FINALLY

Portsmouth say they are "puzzled" by Sol Campbell's criticism of the amount of money they are investing in the side and have told him to stop criticising the club for lacking ambition (Star).

QPR's players may be forced to return £3,000 watches given to them by Flavio Briatore as FA rules say any wages, bonuses or inducements must be registered within their contracts (Express).

Perhaps not, but you're missing the point. I was reading the BBC sports forums last night and the amount of garbage being toted about by outsiders was quite amusing. Perhaps it's simply a Tyneside mentality; or perhaps it's the sort of mentality you'll just about encounter anywhere outside of the top four. Man Utd are a pampered team, financially; if they so much as draw two games in a row they're "on the rocks". It's garbage. The Premiership consists of two separate leagues these days, perhaps even three. It'll be my hope we can get somewhere in the second league and take things from there.

I agree to an extent why you might have doubts about Keegan's appointment; but I only agree because he's coming into a team which is - let's face it - rather quite weak. It's a shadow of the team he left. In short: it's his job now to make the most of a puny squad.

Well good luck too him anyway.

I was listening to 606 last week and some callers was saying that the only reason you get 50,000 each home game is cause you are a one club city- what about sunderland how far is the staduim of light from st james.

One club city or not, we're the hardest supporters in the world. I'll happily chin anyone who thinks otherwise. \:D

Sunderland is an entire town south of Newcastle (Gateshead's in between the two).

Newcastle's gate receipts are high, but the atmosphere isn't the best lately, with many business execs buying season tickets and then not getting behind the team - I guess that's the same everywhere, though.

Atmosphere not helped by the stewards throwing out people for standing up!
Sunderland is roughly 15 miles away from the toon but it might as well be on Mars for all we care.....
Right Mick? \:\)

Africa Nations ready for kick-off

Marcel Desailly has tipped Ivory Coast to win the 26th Africa Cup of Nations which starts in Ghana on Sunday.

The former Chelsea and AC Milan star will be reporting for BBC Sport at the tournament and is predicting a contest high on skill and rich in atmosphere.

Host nation Ghana play Guinea in the opening fixture, with fans and scouts expected to flock to west Africa.

"Ivory Coast are the most complete team - the way they play is the most European," said BBC Sport's Desailly.

Sixteen teams with world-class players such as Ghana midfielder Michael Essien, Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba and Cameroon forward striker Samuel Eto'o are set to illuminate the continent's football showpiece.

"The Nations Cup is special," said Ghana-born Desailly, who moved to France at an early age and won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 with his adopted country.
